AFL Pathway Program's new sponsor

By now you should have that the AFL Pathway Program for young footballers has a new sponsor, the National Australia Bank, to replace the collapsed Ansett Airlines. While the bank's sponsorship is welcome, it should be met with some scepticism and perhaps even criticism.

Footy fans who live in the States may have heard a home lending firm called Homeside. The National (the bank's short name) bought Homeside in the mid-1990s as a stepping stone for its venture into the massive US market, after successes in Australia, New Zealand and Britain. However the investment into Homeside was disastrous, so much so that the National lost $A4 billion and had to sell Homeside to Washington Mutual late last year and made a bloody exit.

Guess who had to pay for the massive loss? Not the bank's top management (although one has resigned), but the average Australians, for the National decided in May to close some 200 branches around Australia in the next six months or so, half of them in country areas, despite protest from staff and customers.

So now you may wonder where the bank got the money to sponsor the Pathway Program, and wonder how some of the young footballers feel if their family has an account with their local National branch which has been closed or is due to be closed, or their relatives work in the bank.
