Comments on AFL internet coverage? Thursday, 13 February 2003, at 8:36 p.m. US Eastern Time

Hey all footy fans,

I was wondering if anyone can comment on the quality of AFL's video/audio streams of last years games (especially any Canadians on DSL/Cable connections). I'm thinking of shelling out the $50 some odd dollars for online coverage of the 2003 fixture but I'm afraid I might get subpar results (busy servers, choppy reception, etc). When I was a uni student in Melbourne during the 2001 season (the year before the Telstra/AFL subscriptions started), I remember the free online RealAudio broadcasts were absolutely god-awful... and that was on a T1 connection, as I was living on campus. Hopefully, the quality of coverage has improved since then.

On a side note, congrats to those who successfully lobbyed to keep footy on FoxSportsWorld!!!

Carlton,
I had the Legends package last season and there a few early bugs. But they were worked out and afl.com.au gave everyone an extra month for free because of the problems. The cost is around $25 (US) for one year. All the matches are uploaded to the site 24 hours after the final siren.

There is a story on afl.com's main page right now (2/15) about upgrades to their video streaming, new video pieces, and better quality being produced by Telstra and AFL Films for 2003 season.

You need a DSL or a cable modem to view the matches. A dialup connection will not get it done. I loved it last season and will be renewing for the 2003 next month.
