I just happened run into this site, and I found it to be interesting. My question is: Can I be able to access Sky Sports channels in New York?

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,

I'm not sure which Sky Sports network you mean, but I'm going to assume it's Sky Sports UK. If you have a sufficiently large dish (not an 18" one!) with a clear SE horizon and the right receiver, in theory you should be able to get the signal. A few warnings though: the signals are almost certainly encrypted and Sky isn't going to willingly let you view the programs.

For one reason, many Sky Sports programs appear on FOX Sports (in particular on FOX Sports World) in the US so they don't want to compete with their sister networks here. (Aside: FSWLD has equal or better Aussie rules coverage than Sky does.)

Also, Sky probably doesn't have rights to much of the live or tape delayed event feeds in North America. Sports rights fees are often sold by region now.

I'm not aware of any US cable or satellite platform that carries Sky Sports but if someone else here knows otherwise, they can jump in. If I haven't answered your question, feel free to clarify it.

Yeah, during the cricket world cup I was wishing we had access to Sky Sports. (I know I could have gotten the world cup on Dish but we have DirecTV.) And Sky's rugby league coverage is much better than FSWD. However, I'm not complaining - I'm grateful that FSWD does show the AFL (thanks in part to the tireless work of our Chairman Rob), along with both rugby union and league. For now (at least with fans of the sports writing in) they're not entirely Fox Soccer World.

However, there is a lesson for us all. If you like what they're showing, or don't like it, write the network! Fox has never responded to me personally, but other networks (MHz and College Sports TV) have.
