Downloading video from afl.com.au Web Link Sunday, 27 April 2003, at 8:19 p.m. US Eastern Time

I've discovered something that may be very useful either for complete footy fiends or for those who cannot get access to FOX Sports World.

It seems there's a piece of freeware available on the net called "ASFrecorder", the purpose of which is to save a streaming Windows Media file -- such as those on the AFL/Telstra website -- to a file on your hard drive that you can watch later at your leisure, without the glitches and delays of the "live" stream. Even as I type this, I am downloading two of the free streams available on their site as a test to see if this really works as advertised. If it does, I am seriously going to consider a subscription, as I will be able to set up my computer to download an entire match in the morning and have it all downloaded ready to watch when I come home. The other advantage of ASFrecorder is that if you have only a 56k connection and are patient, you can still download the high-bandwidth version; it'll just take quite a while.

It's an easy program to find -- just put "asfrecorder" into Google. I downloaded my copy from the archives at PCWorld.com.

Here's hoping this helps everyone who wants it ... Get More Footy!!!!

The Powers That Be have made it much, MUCH more difficult to get to the actual URL you need to download a video stream with the recent reworking of the AFL's website.

They have, in fact made it (technically) impossible for anyone using anything other than a Windows PC using (gag, choke, barf) Internet Exploder to get to the video. If you're on a Mac or using Linux - or have the good sense to realize that IE is a malware magnet and prefer to use Firefox or Opera - you're out of luck.

I've gone so far as to tell Telstra/BigPond that I'm not going to renew my subscription for this year because they've screwed things up so badly - the old site worked well with a variety of browsers and could even be used on non-Windows machines as long as one had the right software to play a Windows Media stream.
