I've read qute a few threads here, and they all seem to say they hate the Eagles! Why? What did the Eagles do?

In one someone said he only baracked for his team because they were the first to beat the Eagles for weeks (Mid '90's, don't worry, I'm not dillusional).

I guess we all have our personal dislikes (mine is Collingwood. It's a family thing, my parents has always hated Collingwood and personally I can't stand Eddie McGuire) but that doesnt explain how EVERY single one of you hates the Eagles.

And I read a thread talking about when you found football, and most of it was early 80's. LOL. I wasn't even born then. Hehe.

To answer your question......Majority or Aussie Rules supporters are from Melbourne and follow Victorian Teams.
Furthermore, the Eagles have taken a few permierships out of victoria, so naturally they're not very well liked. I think they're fact that they're playing good footy doesn't help their cause either.
personally, i dont mind them. They have a nest of talented players that will take the club to another level...like Cousins and Kerr.

I'm a Bomber man. Fresh with a dissapointment after lastnight's loss. Now we have to travel interstate for the first final.

We'll see what happens.

Huh? That's not true. In fact, if you read my blog ( http://www.afana.com/mt-static/ ) you'll have noted that I'm a member of the West Coast Eagles. And there are others in AFANA and certainly quite a few in North America. Are there some fans who don't like them? Sure. And more than a few who don't like Collingwood, Essendon, Kangaroos, St. Kilda, etc. etc. That's no different over here than down under.

I did a search for "hate" or "dislike" with "West Coast" or "Eagles" and found all of four messages on this BBS. Those were either in this thread or the one on how people over here "found footy".

Well, that thread is several years old and what you have to understand is that the toehold for Aussie rules here came where the then newly minted ESPN network signed it's first big international TV contract with.... the AFL! Lots of us, myself included became fans during the eight seasons they carried the sport in the 80's. Since then the sport has bounced around here never quite achieving the same exposure. The other thing is that AFANA is a "fans" organization. Not a league or group of players (although we have many players and umpires among our members). Since we are fans, we have members of all ages and backgrounds. Predictably, some of us are older. I'm 44.

I started "hating" West Coast after their 80 point victory over Geelong (shutting down Gary Ablett) in the 1994 Grand Final. I favor Geelong, and there is no way I could like any team that was able to humiliate my Cats like that. (I hold grudges for a long time ) Plus I first learned about footy on a trip to Melbourne in 1992 so I tend to favor Victorian teams. And Perth is about as far from Victoria as you can get.

Maybe I should start hating every team that beats the Eagles. I never even considered hating a team just because they creamed your team.

I mean, what goes around comes around. Carlton absolutely creamed us a couple of years ago, but then this year we gave it back to them in the 116 pt win. It's not like we cream Geelong all the time. We barely managed a draw last time we met.

Yeah, they're not bad. Prefer Embley, Judd and Gardy. I met him once, he's a really cool bloke. Way to tall though. LOL.

Share your disappoint. Eagles have only lost against Freo, like, 3 times and then we have to lose again. Oh well.

Ah, what do you think? Like you said Melbourne based peeps, like Victorian clubs. Same with Perth. I like the Eagles, coz I'm a Perth girl.

I dn't really hate the Eagles or any team for that matter, but I sure was disappointed at the hiding they dished out my Blues recently. I can take heart though that the Blues have an overall winning record over the Eagles.
My roommate barracks for the Eagles so I do cop a bit when they beat Carlton, but that didn't stop me from buying an Eagle guernsey for my roomie for a Xmas present one year.
I agree that the Eagles have some awesome talent in their side. Cuz has been a star from day 1 and then there is Judd, Gardiner, Kerr, Embley, Wirrpunda (finally after years of battling injury), Cox, Matera, et al.
Mine might have been the thread you read about the Eagles in the 90's. It was Carlton knocking them out of first place in 1994 which led me to become a Carlton supporter.
I don't even hate Collingwood - except when they play Carlton. I really like Eddie McGuire. He has done a fantastic job in turning around the club since 1999 and I love watching him on the Footy Show and his match coverage.
But then again, I am not a parochial Victorian. I am an American. My second team is Sydney. I met Paul Roos when he was here in the US visiting the local clubs a few years ago. I was a goal ump when he helped out as a field ump for a match. It was great. I was just in awe of the guy and when he complimented me on a call I made, I was totally chuffed.
Great bloke and he has done a magnificent job coaching the Swans this year. By coincidence, the team here is the Chicago Swans, who also are doing very well.

Carlton is my second favorite team, after Geelong, so I guess that gives me another reason to "hate" West Coast.

Actually, I think you are taking this too seriously. Everyone needs a team to "hate" as much as they need a team to "love". Putting the word "hate" in quotes is supposed to indicate some amount of humor. If I really DESPISED West Coast, I wouldn't use the quotes. But if you asked me to rank all the teams, West Coast would be my 16th favorite, just behind the "stinkin" Bulldogs. )

I hate the Eagles due to personal reasons. I haven't liked them ever but now I hate them for other reasons. I hope they lose today, not to be mean or anything. I am told that I should like the Eagles because I live like 30 mins outside of Philly that's retarded. No one seemed to like the Eagles when they were losing and now its just a bunch of band wagon jumpers. It makes me mad. I don't see people wearing Eagles stuff all year and even during season when they lose... so yeah. I hope they lose! >

Um, I think Ashley you have the wrong football in mind. What this board is about is Australian Rules Football not American Football. They are talking about the West Coast Eagles in Australia not the Philadelphia Eagles in America.

Bottom line... It's OK to hate the Eagles so long as they are the West Coast Eagles.

The Eagles have been and will continue to be a successful club. They have been in the league only a short time and yet have several premierships. If that upsets a few people, so be it.

The Eagles aren't out to make enemies. They are out to win games. People can hate them if their team gets beat by the Eagles. But perhaps you should blame your team for losing, rather than blame the Eagles for winning.

A strong healthy AFL needs interstate teams to do well.
