Hey there,

I'm interested in coming over and having a kick for a US team. Is it hard to get work, visas, accom etc to get over there. I've looked into it but have been given the run around a bit. I do science work, does anyone know if it's easy to gain sponsorship? Any help would be appreciated.

First, you should know that all of the leagues here are strictly amateur [AFANA is a fan oriented group, not a league BTW]. If you want to come and play, I'm sure you will be welcome.

As for work, it's no harder or easier to get work here than in Australia and without knowing more about your profession I can't offer much more specific advice. Some professions are doing better here than in Australia and vice-versa. If by sponsorship, you mean an academic position, there you would be best to contact the professional association for your field here in the US to get a better reading on the situation.

Visas are very dependent on situation. If a company here hires you they will assist you in going thru the visa process since you will need a visa to remain here and work until you get a permanent residency or "green" card.

Accomodation shouldn't be a problem. Either the company will help you in the transition or you can find it on your own. Usually your identification (passport and visa) and a little cash will be all you need.

On all these subjects there are excellent web sites for Australians working here which have much more specific advice (Australians Abroad, Australians in America BBS, etc.)

Best regards,
