Wayne Carey Wednesday, 30 June 2004, at 7:01 p.m. US Eastern Time

I read on this site that Wayne Carey retired due to injury. I always wondered why he left North Melbourne to join the crows. The article mentioned an off field incident that marred his fine career.

Does anyone have details of the incident and the history behind him leaving the roos.

He quit the club after being caught in an affair with the wife of his teammate Anthony Stevens.

I see how that might put a black eye on an otherwise fine career. Thanks. Bill

He had no choice but to quit. After being found out, the senior players voted him off the team. Because he was still contracted to the Kangaroos, he had to stand out of football for the rest of 2001.
The Kangaroos kept him as a listed player so they could play hardball come trade time, which is exactly what they did. There was plenty of speculation about who would end up with his services - among them Sydney. But the Crows won out in the end, although his two years in Adelaide were marred by injury. He actually began his career in the SANFL before going to the Roos.
When was not hurt, though, there were glimpses of him at his best.

True. But I wonder how much the year off hurt his skills and conditioning. I guess we'll probably never know.

Just a question?

How the heck do you manage to have an affair with a team mate's wife when you have the exact same training schedule, home and away schedule, off season trips etc????

From what I read, he worked out on his own to keep himself fit, so that was never an issue, but he still had a run of soft tissue injury - not uncommon in older players. Then
there was that collision with a point post last year which put a very nasty gash on his knee.

They managed it - my question would be how was Carey able to face his best friend day in and day out, all the while having affair with his wife? Now that is arrogance!

I presume they didn't live far apart and given the length of time it really :D takes to do what they were doing, I don't figure they had much of a problem. Besides, when they were caught it was in a bathroom at one of the houses while a party was going on... :|

I'm not sure, but wasn't the party at Stevens' house?

I would guess if you're going to have an affair with your teammate's wife, the rest probably comes fairly easily.

No, it was at Glenn Archer's house during a birthday bash for Glenn's wife. When the you-know-what began to hit the fan after the Carey and Kelli Stevens came out of a bathroomm, Archer tried to intervene to calm things down and got belted for his trouble.

Far as I know, he and Sally have reconciled. As for post-footy, who knows?

There is no arguing with what you said, but the thread started because someone asked why Carey left the Kangaroos. Nobody here is excusing Kelli, she just wasn't pertenent to the topic of the thread.

That's exactly why there was nothing in the media about Kelli Stevens - because Wayne was so high-profile.
Also, Anthony has never been one to come into the spotlight, so it was probably a combination of the two which kept Kelli out of the media focus.

Q: You're trapped in a room with a tiger, a rattlesnake, and Wayne Carey. You have a gun with two bullets. What should you do?

A: Shoot the Wayne Carey. Twice. :D
