Newbie Questions Friday, 27 August 2004, at 1:05 a.m. US Eastern Time

I have a few questions for you all.

1. What's a clanger?
2. Why do some of the players have black tape on their arm?
3. Is a disposal when they get rid of the ball?
4. What's a ripper? Example: That kick was a ripper.

I know I ask a lot of questions but I'm really trying to understand the game. So please bare with me. :D

A clanger is a bonehead play, such as a bad handball directly to an opponent and a bad kick directly to an opponent. I do not know if this fits the statistical classification, but hitting the post on a uncontested kick for goal would be classified a clanger to me.
> 2. Why do some of the players have black tape on their arm?
That is the method of memorial for somebody connected with the club that has died.
I> 3. Is a disposal when they get rid of the ball?
A disposal is passing the ball by handball or kick.
> 4. What's a ripper? Example: That kick was a ripper.
Ripper is an Aussie slang word for an incredible, awsome, fantastic play. Almost all of Gary Ablett, Sr.'s kicks, marks, bumps — well everything he did was a ripper.

:-S welcome to thw world of 'aussie' slang Brenda..lol
Hope to set a few striaght for you..
1/a clanger..well will depend on the context used..'dropped a clanger' usually refers to stuffing up something that should have been easy.
2/players normaly wear black tape as a sign of respect for someone who has passed passed away and is connected to the AFL or the Club
3/a disposal is where a player recieves, controls and then passes to ball on continue play
4/what a ripper...another term for good..excellent..outstanding.....a player has a 'ripper' of a game means he had an outstanding game.
Some fellow aussie may have a variation in interpretation but thats it basicaly...glad you take an interest in our great game
