Guess The Finals Tuesday, 31 August 2004, at 12:29 a.m. US Eastern Time

What say we have a little finals picking contest here. Before the first game begins, can you predict the winner of every game?

------------------------------------------------
QF1 Port Adelaide v Geelong (AAMI Stadium)

QF2 Brisbane v St. Kilda (The Gabba)

EF1 Melbourne v Essendon (MCG)

EF2 Sydney v West Coast (Telstra Stadium)

SF1 QF1-L v EF1-W

SF2 QF2-L v EF2-W

PF1 QF1-W v SF2-W

PF2 QF2-W v SF1-W

GF PF1-W v PF2-W
------------------------------------------------

Here's my go at it:

------------------------------------------------
QF1 Port Adelaide def Geelong
QF2 Brisbane def St. Kilda
EF1 Melbourne def Essendon
EF2 Sydney def West Coast

SF1 Geelong def Melbourne
SF2 St. Kilda def Sydney

PF1 St. Kilda def Port Adelaide
PF2 Brisbane def Geelong

GF Brisbane def St. Kilda
------------------------------------------------

I am only going to venture a pick on the first weekend of the finals, here we go.

Port Adelaide over Geelong
(My boys cannot win if the game is not in Geelong or Melbourne, although Port Adelaide has made choking an two-time event in qualifying finals. It would be nice for the Cats to get a week off.)

Brisbane over St. Kilda
(I do not think that the Sainters can win away from the dome. The MCG in a semifinal next week, yes. Lynch is out, but Brisbane has shown in the past that Acker can crumb his way to 6-7 goals a game.)

Essendon over Melbourne
(Melbourne has never been a contender and four straight losses will become five in a row. Neitz is out. Are they going to bring in Garry Lyon, David Schwarz, Ron Barassi, Alan Jakovich or Darren Bennett into the side to kick goals? The Demons will not kick 10 goals in this game.)

Sydney over West Coast
(Swans only because the game is in NSW, not WA.)

I still think that the GF will involve Brisbane, Port Adelaide or Geelong. I would think about next week's picks when it is known who has to play semifinals.

Well, I missed the Essendon win, but Brian got them all. Of course, I only need to have two more winners in the next three weeks to have more total picks correct.

Where was everybody else's guesses?

I trust all of you experts will be competing in the AFANA members tipping comp next year. Ross, Lisa, Karl, and myself are waiting for you!

Top finishers in the AFANA Members Tipping Comp for 2004:

Ross Mair 124

Rob de Santos 123
Karl Wall 119
Lisa Albergo 118

Compare that to the scores of the winners in the Herald Sun comp and you'll see the competition will be tough. :D

With two weekends in the books, let's check the standings. I got both winners right this weekend. Brian didn't venture a guess. So I guess that means Brian is in second place, and I'm next to last.

I forgot to put my picks up on the AFANA board. I will confess, I missed both games. I did turn in my guesses to the two office tipping comps I belong to in Melbourne (with mates there). I didn't think either the Saints or my Catters would recover from horrible games in the qualifying finals.
Rain will determine Geelong's chances next Saturday.
