How does FSW get the Grand Final feed? Monday, 20 September 2004, at 1:21 p.m. US Eastern Time

A bit of a technical question.

I'm curious how Fox Sports World gets the video feed for the Grand Final? I know that throughout the season FSW receives regular video tapes sent via courier but obviously this isn't the case with a live Grand Final. What satelite is the feed being uplinked to from Australia? Are all games "potentially" available in north america because they are uplinked to a satelite but FSW merely doesn't receieve it. Or is it the case that with the Grand Final, the AFL uplinks this one and only one game to a satelite for live international distribution? Any good technical resources or info on this sort of thing?

FOX Sports World (FSWLD) downlinks the Grand Final off a satellite over the Pacific. I imagine it's probably PAS2 or PAS9 though several others are also possibilities. When AFANA produced the 1996 Grand Final we used the satellite feed intended for Sky New Zealand. You can ask FSWLD but they won't likely tell you. ;)

No, they aren't available but anything is potentially available. :\ FSWLD could get feeds off of PAS2 and PAS9 because ABC Asia Pacific feeds it's coverage to those satellites, though often on tape delay. There is no live feed on any satellite not aimed at Australia to AFANA's knowledge. Unfortunately, PAS2 and PAS9 are not accessible except from the extreme west coast of North America and require a large dish and MPEG2 receiver.

The best resources are AFANA's annual guide to viewing footy in North America usually issued right around the beginning of the season. It's in our Media Newsletter. The back issue for 2004 is:
tvupdatev9n06@afana.com (text) or
tvupdatev9n06h@afana.com (html)
Just send a blank e-mail (no subject, no body) to those addresses.

You can also check resources such as the various satellite newsletters and web sites. Or just subscribe to our newsletters. Get the schedules and such info for free every week of the season and annually. :D Go to http://www.afana.com/newletter_signup.shtml

Note to all readers: if you put your e-mail address in the e-mail line we obscure it when you post but then you can get e-mail notifications when we reply... something Phil didn't apparently do. :)
