Well, I guess I'll post the sad news in this thread, instead of going back to my original one. I have just received word from the Events Manager for the Sydney Swans. He confirms that the AFL has called off the Swans-Kangaroos match that was to be part of Australia Week in LA. The Australia Week promoters have had a calendar up at their web site for a few weeks now, and the game has not been on it.

The explanation I was given was

The AFL has been unable to get this up an running logistically due to issues with the promotion of the event.

Rob de Santos has reported on the lack of response he has received from the AFL about this game. I personally have received no response to several inquiries to the promoters of Australia Week in LA. However, the Sydney Swans have responded promptly to me each time I have inquired.

Hi KC and Sarah,

I can confirm that following my meetings with both the Swans and the AFL, that the match is not going forward this year.

As in the past, it appears that money issues are a major reason. The AFL wanted the clubs to pay part of the cost of participating and the AFL and the potential participants could not reach a financial agreement. The AFL wants to have an exhibition in the US but at this point, the earliest date may be 2006. They will be returning to play a match in London following the 2005 season. Whether they participate in a future "Australia Week" in LA is undetermined.
