The Gameshark is a cheat device (like the old Game Genie from the Nintendo days), except the original version also has a feature that allows your PS2 to become region free and play all import games. From what I've heard, the new version of the GameShark don't let you do this.
However there is also something called the "Swap Magic" that you can buy off the net. Basically it's just a boot disc you can buy that lets you play all import games on your PS2, no modchips or complex modifications to your console required. It will even let you use PAL discs on an NTSC console and play on an NTSC TV. I have included the optional URL posted below. The two notable features listed are:
* Works with original import games
* Swap Magic 3 can change the colour system (NTSC,PAL) output of the PS2 so that you can play all the NTSC and PAL games.
Now depending on the model of your PS2, you have to use the "Swap Magic" differently. If you have one of the original larger models of the PS2 (the ones with the motorized disc tray), you have to get the optional "slide card" thing that you have to use, which allows you to eject the Swap Magic disc without pressing the Eject button (so that your console doesn't reset), the replace the swap magic disc with the import game of your choice, which will then load.
If you have one of those new slimmer model Ps2 consoles with the fliptop CD cover you have a more elegant option.
There is a cheap $6 thing called a "magic switch" that you can use with the "Swap Magic" disc on the newer slip design PS2s. Basically it's just a bunch of small plastic pegs that you snap into the holes on the DVD drive so that when you eject the CD lid, the console ALWAYS thinks the lid is closed so that you can change the swap magic disc with the import game and have it load.
They sell a package of the two together for $27. It should work just fine for the import Australian PAL copy of AFL Live on the PS2 and allow you to play it on your US/Canadian NTSC PS2 on your regular NTSC television.
