Is anybody else interested in obtaining a multi-system VCR, one capable of playing PAL videotapes from Australia on American NTSC TVs? I was wondering if we might be able to organize a group buy and get a good deal.

The Emerson EWW7070 keeps showing up on eBay, and typically sells for a little over $400. I'm interested in seeing if we could beat that deal.

Well, I got one reply privately. Anybody else interested? I am willing to put some effort in under the AFANA banner if there is enough interest to make it worth the effort.

Hi Richard -

I get match tapes from a friend in NSW, already in NTSC format. Drop me a line privately and we can discuss this further.

My NSW source has a VCR that will play NTSC but records PAL only. As for conversion service, it is easily obtained, but adds another delay into getting to see the tapes.

Based on the (lack of) response, it looks like my best bet is to keep watching eBay. Any chance this idea could sneak into a TV update or other organizational mailing?

Yes, we can mention it in a future update. The next one probably won't go out earlier than this Friday. I'll send the info on.

My efforts to find somebody interested in a group sale have met with no success. However, the price on Emerson EWW7070s on eBay seems to have fallen a bit, and I have seen a few sell for $375-$385 recently...including one to ME!

Interestingly, the Emerson EWW7070s are slipping below the $400 price point, while the AIWA HV-MX100 sells simultaneously at $600. Based on reviews I have read, one of these is priced wrong.

I am abandoning my efforts on this project, but click the link below if you want to see what is available on eBay. Just be sure you are getting one with signal conversion. There are models that will play PAL to PAL & NTSC to NTSC, but will not play PAL to NTSC (some of them will do NTSC tapes to PAL sets). If in doubt, ask the seller.
