> 1. Astroturf

There's nothing wrong with playing on nasty green carpet! :)

> 2. Suburban rivalries

Ah, but it's always fun to see Chicago and Detroit beat the snot out of each other (even if both aren't too swift).

> 4. AFL teams don't play at ameritrade.com Cricket Ground or Pepsi Oval yet)

But they do play at Optus Oval. While on the subject of names, I like Bowl Week when Podunk U. plays Michigan School for the Criminaly Insane in the "weedwacker.com bowl".

Terrific role models!.

AFL vs. NFL?

Who showed more (or less) class in the way he retired - Gary Ablett or Barry Sanders?

Colonial Stadium, (Colonial is a banking & insurance company), Shell Stadium (petrol [gas] co - Royal Dutch Shell), Football Park is rumored to soon become 'Coca Cola Park - or the like) and the trustees of the 'G' are looking for a naming rights sponsor - to inpart pay for further ground redevelopment for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

> 5. Players strikes

We've had the odd umpires strike or two though, and now the player saleries are starting to get out there, they might not be far behind.

> 7. The Baltimore Ravens' uniforms

The Carlton M&M pale blue jumper and this weekend the Roos are rumored to be wearing an orange version of their jumper for a payment of a 1/4 mil. And lets not forget Port's, the Eagles new jumper or even my beloved Saints new[ish] how jumper -- horible all.

« Guess I better do more research... Wednesday, 26 July 2000, at 3:41 a.m. US Eastern Time

Need to brush up on my Australian sponsors, eh? :)

Should have known the AFL wasn't immune to corporate naming rights.

You have to bear in mind that the clubs are membership based, not privately owned, so both they and the league depend on memberships and corporate sponsorship. Currently, the AFL is sponsored by Ansett (thus the preseaon Ansett Cup games), which is also the airline which services all the clubs when they travel interstate, McDonald's, which sponsors the juniors Auskick program, which is a series of clinics for kids to learn the skills of the game. Many parents and other volunteers work as Auskick coaches and officials. The other big sponsor is Coca-Cola. The home-and-away season is sometimes referred to as the Coca-Cola home and away season.

Each club pursues their own corporate sponsorships, with numerous companies contributing various sums. The corporate logos on team uniforms are usually the main sponsors. Some examples are:

Adelaide - Toyota
Carlton - Hyundai
Geelong - Ford
Kangaroos - Mazda
Sydney - QBE (an insurance company)
Melbourne - Toohey's (a brewery)
Essendon - TAC (Traffic Accident Commission, thus the "Speed Kills" logo)

Some sponsors also pay big bucks for signage and naming rights at home grounds.
That's why Geelong's home, Kardinia, became Shell Stadium and Carlton's home, Princes Park, became Optus Oval (a telecommications company). And that's why you see Coca-cola and McDonald's signs at the MCG and the golden arches on the footballs.

Puma, Nike, and addidas also have a hand in sponosrships with some clubs. The Kangaroos had a deal with Hewlett-Packard for a few years.

Hope this helps.

That's right...I also recall someone (Richmond?) had Hungry Jack's (AU equivalent of Burger King) on their guernseys.

Yeah, I know of the ball and the big Coke signs...that's one thing that we don't usually see here yet (where sponsors are actually painted on the field of play); at least in football. The only instances I can think of are college bowl games (I went to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in 1996 and won't forget the sheer bombardment of Tostitos decoration plastered all over the sides of the stadium facade and pressbox; it was ridiculous).

I'm glad you said "at least in football." Some (maybe all?) National Hockey League teams have sponsors painted on the ice.

West Coast Eagles, I think. And Burger Kings are also starting to show up in Australia, or so I'm told.

And Heinz is starting to sell "Tomato Sauce" as "Ketchup" (or maybe "Catsup") down under.

Hmm.... seeing as Barry Sanders showed NO class in his retirement, I'd have to say Gary Ablett.
