You have to bear in mind that the clubs are membership based, not privately owned, so both they and the league depend on memberships and corporate sponsorship. Currently, the AFL is sponsored by Ansett (thus the preseaon Ansett Cup games), which is also the airline which services all the clubs when they travel interstate, McDonald's, which sponsors the juniors Auskick program, which is a series of clinics for kids to learn the skills of the game. Many parents and other volunteers work as Auskick coaches and officials. The other big sponsor is Coca-Cola. The home-and-away season is sometimes referred to as the Coca-Cola home and away season.
Each club pursues their own corporate sponsorships, with numerous companies contributing various sums. The corporate logos on team uniforms are usually the main sponsors. Some examples are:
Adelaide - Toyota
Carlton - Hyundai
Geelong - Ford
Kangaroos - Mazda
Sydney - QBE (an insurance company)
Melbourne - Toohey's (a brewery)
Essendon - TAC (Traffic Accident Commission, thus the "Speed Kills" logo)Some sponsors also pay big bucks for signage and naming rights at home grounds.
That's why Geelong's home, Kardinia, became Shell Stadium and Carlton's home, Princes Park, became Optus Oval (a telecommications company). And that's why you see Coca-cola and McDonald's signs at the MCG and the golden arches on the footballs.Puma, Nike, and addidas also have a hand in sponosrships with some clubs. The Kangaroos had a deal with Hewlett-Packard for a few years.
Hope this helps.
