AFL Record Wants You Sunday, 22 July 2001, at 2:13 p.m. US Eastern Time

OK, everyone, here's your chance to have your say about footy. The AFL Record is dedicating the Round 19 issue to THE FANS. And they want to hear from YOU. Tell them who you barrack for, how you keep up with the footy, maybe include a funny story or two of your experiences in following the game.
Send your letters to:

Don't forget to send AFANA a copy of what you send to the AFL Record... what they don't use we might!

Hi,

I remember watching footy in the early 80's on ESPN, but then they stopped broadcasting it. Last May I was fortunate enough to vacation in Australia for a few weeks. I saw several matches on TV and got back into it. Unfortunately, I was only there Monday - Thursday, so I missed the chance to see a weekend game at the MCG. I had been searching around for a year to see if any broadcasted the games (I only get the regular FSN so I can't see anything on TV), but last month I found the league site that broadcasts the games live on the Internet. I schedule recording of the 12:10 AM EST broadcasts on Sat. and Sun. morning, then convert to MP3, and listen later on my portable MP3 player.

When I was in Melbourne, I stopped at the large casino complex there and went into a footy shop. Since I didn't know what teams were what, I just asked the salesperson which team was good. He told me Essendon, so I got a t-shirt which I wear when I'm listening to the games. After a year, yesterday I finally actually got to hear an Essendon game - which was last week's thriller in which they came back from 69 to win!

I really enjoy the broadcasts, since they are live, and the broadcasters are so into the game. These guys kept calling it "match of the millenium" and so on. Quite exciting.

I found a site that broadcasts NRL (rugby league) game telecasts with streaming video. Is there any similar site for AFL? If I were to buy some videos, which ones are must haves? Is there any way to get the video of the games from this year?

Hi Mike,

That's how many of us here first saw the sport.. when ESPN aired it in its early days.

Well you've found the one organization that always knows when and where the footy is on the air... if you signup for our newsletters you can get the schedules by e-mail. Our past issues also detail how to get FSWLD (digital cable, satellite). One note so we don't confuse anyone... the games start at 12:10 AM EDT US time.

Must have been the Crown Casino. You were lucky to hear the game this weekend... it might be another generation before a club outdoes what Essendon did this past weekend.

It was one of the great matches in history -- unless you were a Kangaroos fan.

There isn't any live video feed of AFL matches. Complicated reasons but bandwidth costs are a serious problem and the AFL has yet to figure out how to get the audio feeds right... we get lots of complaints about people unable to connect. Also, the AFL is still sorting out it's Internet rights. As for videos, AFANA has sold them in the past, so e-mail me for more info.

if you haven't posted your story to the AFL Record yet, you still have time. They pushed the fan edition back to Round 21 so you still have 2 weeks.

Again, send your story to:

AFL Record - Fan Edition FAX: 03 9643 1856
GPO Box 1449N or
Melbourne 3001 e-mail: michaell@afl.com.au

And don't forget to post them to AFANA as well

Yes, we know. :-) Etna Video/Gowannna and AFANA sell the same videos... in fact we are business partners with them and we now send all of our customers to them. In truth, anything that AFL Video sells, Gowanna does too, just in a format for North American VCRs.

Hey,

I was just wondering if you would be able to email me some images of some of the front cover of the AFL record.

I am doing an assignment in Design at school and i need to redesign the front cover for the AFL record.

That would be much appreciated.

Thanks Alex Lunn.
