Greatest VFL/AFL marks of all time Wednesday, 25 July 2001, at 1:47 a.m. US Eastern Time

Fellow Aussie football fans,
Here is a thread that should get a few replies:

Just list your favourite/greatest VFL/AFL marks of all
time, along with the reason why they are so memorable

For the record, here are my 3 favourites:

1. Sean Smith - 1995 Melbourne v Brisbane
How can someone get so high without any support?

2. Michael Roach - 1979 Richmond v Hawthorn
Roach was so high up he made an above the face
mark into a chest mark!

3. Brett Allison - 1991 North Melbourne v Collingwood
The greatest hanger of all time - Allison was perched
on his opponent's shoulders for a week!

Shaun Smith's against Brisbane. After all it was voted as the mark of the century.

Jezza's 1970 GF Mark.

Chris Tarrant's from this year and Gary Moorcorft's mark also was great.

I have also seen photos of Ron Todd, John Coleman, and Bob Pratt flying high - pretty spectacular.

I don't think SOS's mark was even included in the nominations in 1996. Though Smith's still had some stiff competition between Jezza's 1970 GF mark and gary Ablett's 1994 Mark of the Year.

If it;s the one I;m thinking of, I have seen it and it certainly should have been a contender.

There have been a few since then - like Farmer's against Richmond a few years ago and Tarrant and Moorcroft this season. Well, maybe they'll be in the running at the next centennary celebrations.

Twiggy Dunne 1977. Monday, 14 January 2002, at 5:32 p.m. US Eastern Time

Depends how you mark them. PErsonally Pack Marks are the toughest. Twiggy's in the 1977 GF would have to rate up there, pack mark against 10 other players, in the dying minutes of a GF when you're 6 pts down.

Diffacult, Contested, Pressure, Vital.

Dont rate the one-on-one sits like allisons & moorcrofts. Training drills really, if you got a leap.

Sorry, but we don't have any AFL pictures here as far back as 2001. We didn't have a staff photographer in 2001 and might not even have had one at that particular match that day, in any case. Even if we did, costs, copyright laws and our agreement with the AFL prohibit us from distributing them by just sending them out on request.

I'd suggest contacting the AFL or Getty Images, their photographic distributor. It won't be cheap though.

I was at Colonial Stadium that night, in the time keepers box. It was very difficult to see what happened live, but the replays on the big screens at Colonial showed the story. I think it out did Gazza over Pert, Shaun Smith and Tony Modra marks in the goal square, but still second to Jezza in the 1970 GF.
I do have that Moorcroft mark on video tape at home.
