Finals Week 3 – Preliminary Finals

Sydney V Collingwood at ANZ Stadium Friday night

It’s been said a few times already this season about just how surprisingly good the Sydney Swans have been and as a result here they are playing Collingwood in a preliminary final in Sydney. That wasn’t something I would have forecast at the start of the season and neither did a whole studio full of experts. This will be a game of defences and just which team can withstand the pressure the longest. For the Swans to win they would have to break a long losing streak by winning against the Magpies at ANZ Stadium. In a game like this it’s the little things that make the difference. Sydney has had a week to rest sore and tired bodies, Collingwood has had just a 6 day break and a training routine altered to allow them to attend a funeral of former team mate (RIP J-Mac). The Pies will want to be 3 or 4 goals up going into the final quarter to be a chance. They seem to have reacquired the hunger but the two tough games they have played will be critical in a tight finish.

Hawthorn V Adelaide at the MCG Saturday Evening

I can’t quite figure why this is a twilight game? Is there something else on in Melbourne that clashes with a game in the afternoon at the MCG? The Crows played a tough game last week but in that game against Fremantle and the previous game against Sydney it showed a team that is not quite up to the standard of beating a team like Hawthorn. Congratulations on them having such a stellar season, a season that was also, like Sydney’s, not picked by me or that studio full of experts. Whether their year has anything to do with the new coach or the friendly draw is a hard call but certainly they have finished well and they have got as far as a prelim final. For the Crows to be competitive for 4 quarters they will have to play like there is no tomorrow, throw all caution to the wind, take every opportunity and just go hard for every contested ball. It’s difficult to see the Hawks throw away a season at this point and just their class and goal kicking potential in addition to Franklin will make it hard for Adelaide to overcome.
