With a twelve goal burst in the third quarter, the West Coast Eagles delivered the highest score in any quarter in the club’s history and put the stranglehold on a one-sided Round 7 game against the Gold Coast Suns at Domain Stadium. The game was played in wet conditions and it wasn’t long before the Eagles put their winning stamp on the game.
Gold Coast was impressive in the opening moments of play. They put pressure on the Eagles and were not afraid to throw their bodies into the hard contests. There were many stoppages and rugby-like mauls due to the heavy rain and the standard of football was not high. The majority of the play was in the Eagles’ forward half, with 24 to four forward entries to West Coast by the end of the first quarter . There was an easing of the rain and West Coast made better use of the improved conditions, scoring three goals, including one from Josh Hill that seemed to have an inbuilt radar as it dribbled along the ground and made all the right moves before wobbling through for the goal.
In the second quarter things went from bad to worse for the Suns when the Eagles scored nine unanswered goals to take the game away. Elliot Yeo was playing a cracker of a game and his three goals to half time had West Coast bubbling. Gold Coast could only manage a solitary behind and looked woefully out-gunned.
West Coast stepped it up another gear after the long break and booted twelve goals in a row in the third quarter, a club record, to completely demoralize the Suns. Coach Eade said after the game that the third quarter was like sitting in an air-raid shelter and that he felt sorry for some of his defenders. Gold Coast had few winners on the ground but Harley Bennell and Dion Prestia tried hard and were the best for their team. With the match well and truly won, West Coast eased off the pedal and substituted Josh Kennedy as a precaution after several weeks with a dubious elbow. Gold Coast took advantage of the reduced pressure and kicked four goals to two to win the quarter but they had been squashed and looked relieved when the final siren sounded.
West Coast holds on to second position with a mouth-watering percentage of 156.6, the highest in the League. Gold Coast slides to second bottom and will be worrying about coming against Collingwood in the next round after the Magpies lost to Richmond by less than a goal.
