Community Award Honors Stynes

The AFL and the Reach Foundation has honored the late Jim Stynes with a community award in his name. The Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award will be presented on Brownlow Night to a player for his community work and who "demonstrates the values of Jim Stynes in his commitment to the community and understanding the value of helping others". The announcement was made by Jim Stynes’ widow, Sam Stynes, Reach chairman and Melbourne president Don McLardy and AFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou. The League was considering a presentation on Grand Final Day but opted to present it on Brownlow Night as Stynes won the prestigious award in 1991.  read more »

MCG Milestone

Round 4 saw the MCG host its 2500th game when Carlton and Essendon faced off. In a way, it was fitting that two of the League's foundation clubs played this historical game. Indeed the milestone could well have been reached some years ago except for the fact that the powers that were way back in 1896 refused to allow the new game of Aussie Rules to be played on the ground for fear it would ruin the surface for summer cricket. 150 consecutive games: Carlton's Kade Simpson played his 150th consecutive game in Round Six. His streak began in Round 15, 2005. It is the longest current streak and Simpson is the 19th player in League history to play 150 or more games consecutively. Former Tiger champion Kevin Bartlett did it twice during his 400-plus game career.  read more »

AFL Installs Prayer Rooms

Tiger Bachar Houli, a devout Muslim and an AFL multicultural ambassador, brought the need for prayer rooms to the AFL. He believes that a lack of proper prayer areas at AFL grounds was keeping many Muslims, who are obligated to pray five times a day, from attending games. Those who do attend had to carry out these obligations in stairwells, rest rooms and parking lots - any place they could find where they could be relatively alone. The AFL has now introduced prayer rooms at the MCG, Etihad and ANZ Stadium in Sydney. The League is planning on doing the same at all AFL grounds. The rooms will be multi-faith in keeping with the League's cultural diversity policy.  read more »

Sydney's Adam Goodes, who missed Round 4 due to suspension, played his 304th game in Round 5. This takes him past former champion and teammate Michael O'Loughlin. The Sydney pair is behind former Adelaide champion Andrew McLeod (340 games) for most games played by an indigenous player.  read more »

Jonathan Brown's second goal late in the third term against the Suns was his 500th career goal. He is the first player in the club’s history to reach the mark. Docker Matthew Pavlich kicked a goal in Round 4 and one in Round 5. He needs five more to become the first Docker in Fremantle's short history to boot 500 goals.  read more »

Former Melbourne star Jim Stynes passed away several weeks ago after losing a long battle with cancer. His ashes were taken to Ireland and scattered in a favorite place by his family.  read more »

NAB Cup Sub Rule Out

Between the end of the NAB Cup series and the start of Round One on March 24, the AFL held the season launch in Sydney. In between the festivities, League officials met with club captains and coaches to discuss the new rules which were tried out in the preseason. One rule which was high on the agenda was the two substitute-two interchange player rule.  read more »

Down And Out Already

The season is barely one week old and already several players are going to be sidelined for a number of weeks. The clubs have the option of promoting a rookie to the senior list to replace the injured players who must remain on the long-term injury list for a minimum of 6-8 weeks regardless of their recovery progress.

Swans Sign USA Basketballer

Former Sydney Swans coach Paul Roos, whose wife is American, was in California last summer. While there, he conducted a footy clinic. Among the attendees was Alex Starling, a talented college basketball player who has also played American football. In August, Starling spent three weeks in Australia for more testing and impressed Sydney Coach John Longmire, development manager Stuart Maxfield and head of player personnel Kinnear Beatson. So impressed is the club that it has signed Starling under the AFL's International Scholarship plan.  read more »
