G'day fellow footy fans,
I have finally got around to it, but I hope this is the first of many blogs about my thoughts of footy from here in Sydney. Before I begin, though, it would be remiss of me not to echo the thoughts of Derrick and thanking Rob and the whole AFANA crew for the opportunities I have been afforded so far with AFANA. I have spent the best part of the last 18 months covering Swans games for AFANA, making valuable contacts and gaining important experience while I am still at university.
Having had AFANA on my CV during this time has already helped out. Since joining here, I have become sports editor for the uni magazine publication, am co-hosting a weekly sports program on community radio and this week will begin a cadetship on a news service called National Radio News, second only in reach to the ABC- my first paid job! read more »

Fremantle’s chances of playing Finals football in September appear all but over after they succumbed to a 28-point defeat at the hands of the Sydney Swans in their Heritage Round clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The 11.23 (89) to 9.7 (61) loss leaves the Dockers two games outside the top Eight with only eight rounds to play and read more »

Sydney has again defied their critics and put their season back on track following a clinical 31 point disposal of competition leaders Port Adelaide at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday afternoon (AEST). The Swans played an exciting attacking brand of football for most of the day, and while the result was not completely assured until mid-way through the final term, the home side led from start to finish and always had the Power at arms length. read more »

The Melbourne Demons remain winless after five rounds of the AFL home and away season after falling to a 49 point defeat at the hands of the Sydney Swans on Saturday night (AEST). The win was another archetypal Swans team performance, read more »

At times they fumbled, kicked poorly and turned over the ball too easily, but the Sydney Swans have used their superior ability to close out games to down the Brisbane Lions by 27 points at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
After trailing by 10 points at the final change and looking anything like premiership favorites, the Swans slammed five goals to none in the final quarter in a commanding finish. The win also capped a memorable 250th game for star forward Michael O’Loughlin, whose last quarter goals helped seal the win. read more »

This Week:
After a tumultuous month in their club’s history, the Eagles, as well as the AFL, will be finally looking to turning the focus onto the field this weekend. There will be no better way to do this than against the Swans in another Grand Final rematch in what is quickly becoming the AFL’s biggest rivalry. The evenness of the two sides has been well publicized, and after the Eagles one-point win at the MCG last September, only 12 points have separated the sides in their last five encounters. read more »

In Late Grand Final news... Jolly to Play; Graham Misses Out
Ruckman Darren Jolly will take his place for tomorrow's Grand Final after flying down to Melbourne today to join his teammates, who arrived last night. With his wife heavily pregnant, Jolly said last weekend he would miss the Grand Final if it meant seeing the birth of his child. While Deanne Jolly was not due to give birth for another three weeks, she has a family history of premature births. True to its word, the youngest member of the Jolly household, a girl, was born at the Prince of Wales hospital in Sydney. read more »
