Community Award Honors Stynes

The AFL and the Reach Foundation has honored the late Jim Stynes with a community award in his name. The Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award will be presented on Brownlow Night to a player for his community work and who "demonstrates the values of Jim Stynes in his commitment to the community and understanding the value of helping others". The announcement was made by Jim Stynes’ widow, Sam Stynes, Reach chairman and Melbourne president Don McLardy and AFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou. The League was considering a presentation on Grand Final Day but opted to present it on Brownlow Night as Stynes won the prestigious award in 1991.  read more »

Seven Newcomers For All-Australian

On the Monday following the Semi-Finals, the AFL held their All-Australian ceremony. Richmond's Jack Riewoldt was presented with the Coleman Medal as the AFL's leading goalkicker for the season, Melbourne's Liam Jurrah was awarded Mark of the Year and Lance Franklin was awarded Goal of the Year.  read more »

Awards, NAB Rules, Tribunal Changes, Injury Updates

The league is set to hold their annual AGM in March, at which time they will present 10 past and present players with AFL life memberships.The announcement was made recently with seven current players reaching the required 300 games. They are Adelaide's Tyson Edwards, North Melbourne's Brent Harvey, Sydney's Michael O'Loughlin, Richmond's Matthew Richardson, Melbourne's Adem Yze and senior field umpires Shane McInerney and Stephen McBurney.  read more »

Post Grand Final News

The season may be over, but business continues...

Hawthorn's Sam Mitchell was reported during the Grand Final for forceful front-on contact against Geelong's Gary Ablett. The Match Review Panel (MRP) reviewed the incident and determined that Mitchell's contact on Ablett was caused by Mitchell being pushed into Ablett by Cat Cameron Ling. The MRP further determined that Mitchell did try to minimize the impact by trying to slow down before making contact with Ablett. They also determined that most of the contact was made to Ablett's shoulder and that the minimal contact made by Mitchell to Ablett's head was an attempt by Mitchell to protect himself.
