(This editorial is in response to the following post on the site of usfootynews.com: AFL Decision Fails Sport in USA.)
Our friend Wayne Kraska at usfootynews.com recently posted an editorial on why he feels the AFL has failed the sport of Australian football in the USA with it's latest TV contract with Fox Sports Plus (announcement here). Considering his arguments and those of the many fans who commented here on this site, on our Facebook page, and in e-mails to us, I felt it was appropriate to respond.
At the outset, I want every reader to know that I am sympathetic to the fans who feel the sport took a backward step with this new deal. In some ways, that may be true. I understand the frustration of fans who cannot get or afford to subscribe to Fox Sports Plus (FSP). I also believe that there is a lack of understanding by many of the realities the AFL faced, the alternatives available, and the history of both recent events and those since 1980 when the AFL first appeared on the then nascent network ESPN.
I want to address Wayne's key points because he raises some that many other fans have expressed. read more »
As this article in the Courier Mail (and other newspapers) notes ESPN recently had fun with the Barry Hall incident in the AFL. Sadly, this is not the kind of attention that really helps the sport here in North America. It simply reinforces the stereotypical image of footy that we need to move beyond.
Kimber Smith and Joe Fidler, new interim leadership for AFANA, discuss moving forward after the new television and broadband coverage.
...ESPN will offer live matches via broadband, so we’re a little better off than we were four years ago. As far as broadcast goes, we’ve been promised a live Grand Final on ESPN2 for 2009. Next season? Four games and a live Grand Final. Maybe more. Maybe not. America One and MHz Worldview will offer delayed match coverage and highlights.
And that’s what we have through 2011.
So what do we need to do now?... read more »
G'day North North America,
I suppose maybe viewers didn't think I was asking a question in my last blog, I apologise for the miscommunication; I was kinda asking: Is there any Cat supporters out there in America and /or Canada? And If so do you at all try to catch up with the latest goss of the happenings at the Cattery(Skilled Stadium-Home of the club) are you heading soon to your nearest Grand Final party to represent the club if we participate? If any of you are out there please spread the word of the Cat and the great city and club of Geelong for - out of our theme song 'We are Geelong, the greatest team of all'-LOL sorry if it sounds corny but I'm just a proud, born and bred 'Cat' supporter and local passionate to spread the word about our great honourable club.
Another entry from my old blog... updates are in color.

Recently [2004], journalist Martin Flanagan addressed the AFL club presidents and CEOs. An edited version of his speech is here::The meaning of football
In particular, I draw your attention to these paragraphs: "The quandary facing Australian football is that we have a world-class game played, read more »
I'd been a photographer for about 18 months, covering predominantly surfing in my home state of South Australia - with great success. Having played Australian Rules Football myself for a number of years, I then decided to test my photographic acumen at professional sports level - AFL training, at the two local clubs here in Adelaide - The Adelaide Crows, and Port Adelaide Power.
My first big break came in a matter of weeks, where I captured an image of Daryl Wakelin wearing a newly devised headgear, and returning to top level football after a dramatic head injury sustained weeks before. As luck would have it, Port Adelaide Power used the image on their AFL Club website. This was back in the year 2003, towards the conclusion of the football season. read more »

Fellow footy fans,
Today is my last day leading AFANA (see announcement here). It's been a ride that at times has been frustrating, exhilarating, discouraging, hopeless, thrilling, fun, and just plain hard work. Now, at the end, it is a relief and as one door closes, another is opening. More on that later.
First, I need to publicly thank a few people. First, to my two co-founders: Wade Hinkle and the late Richard Lipp. Without their encouragement, foresight, and motivation, I wouldn't be here and AFANA wouldn't exist. Thank you for your belief in me and in the potential of this organization. To our outgoing editor, my long time friend and colleague, Ann Solomon: You've never failed me personally or professionally and I can never repay you. You have always listened read more »
