Yeates Renembers While Fan Fumes

by Lisa Albergo — Fri, 2008-09-26 05:35 — Last Updated: Sun, 2008-09-28 19:52

Memories, old and new

He played for Geelong for 11 years but Mark Yeates is best remembered for firing the first shot in the 1989 Grand Final when he flattened Hawk star Dermott Brereton at the opening bounce. Brereton played out the game despite suffering a bruised kidney and internal bleeding from the hit. Needless to say, Yeates is in demand this week with the Hawks and Cats set to face off in a Grand Final for the first time since that bruising battle. Brereton was the first of many casualties from that game. Others included Robert DiPierdomenico (cracked ribs and punctured lung), John Platten (concussion) and Michael Tuck (hand) among others.  read more »

Geelong And Hawthorn Then And Now

by Lisa Albergo — Thu, 2008-09-25 18:39 — Last Updated: Fri, 2008-09-26 03:25

Will history repeat itself?

The Hawks and Cats lined up against each other in Round 17 this year. By midseason, both had proved themselves as two of the most dominant teams in the competition. Prior to this game, the Cats had lost just once to Collingwood in Round Nine while Hawthorn had only three losses against the Bulldogs in Round 10, the Kangaroos in Round 13 and the previous week against St. Kilda. Geelong was sitting in first place and the Hawks were third behind the Bulldogs. By midseason, this was one of the most anticipated games of the year.  read more »

And then there were two...

This game may well prove to be the perfect tune-up for Geelong's Grand Final next week. The Cats did not have everything their own way early in the game as the Bulldogs threw everything they could at the Cats. Through much of the first term, the pressure applied by the Dogs forced the Cats into uncharacteristic errors. It took several minutes before Stokes registered the first goal for the Cats and from there it went goal for goal until midway through the term  read more »

Western Bulldogs, Saints take their matches

The Swans and Bulldogs seemed evenly matched early in the game and the Swans could have raced out to a handy lead if not for some poor shooting for goal early in the first term. The Dogs took the early lead with a goal to Murphy, but Hall had the Swans in front with his first of the match midway through the term  read more »
