Ireland Takes Series In Two Thrillers

Light rain, heavy scoring

As in years past, the Australians attacked both man and ball. While the Australians tackled hard, they couldn't match the Irish in skill with the ball. Irish star Cavanaugh scored first with a 3 point over. North Melbourne's Campbell earned a free kick within scoring range, but the kick was intercepted by the Irish goalkeeper. The Irish attack continued strongly throughout the first term but all they could manage was six more points. It was enough with Australia's only score coming from Port Adelaide's Daniel Motlop. It was only a point and the Irish had an eight point lead at 1/4 time.

New times, new teams under discussion

AFL heavyweights Collingwood and Carlton are big winners in the 2009 schedule released in Melbourne, featuring three timeslots to be trialled with one eye on the league's future expansion plans.

The 2009 season commences on Thursday, March 26 with traditional rivals Richmond and Carlton clashing at the MCG, followed by the grand final rematch between Hawthorn and Geelong at the same venue the following night. As the opening round coincides with the Australian Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne, only one match will be played in Melbourne on qualifying day (March 28). On race day (Sunday, March 29), Melbourne plays North Melbourne at the MCG in early afternoon before the F1 race begins at 5pm, with Fremantle hosting Western Bulldogs in Perth after the race finishes.  read more »

New names, new teams, old troubles all in the news

Telstra Dome Renamed
While it was under construction, the Dome was known as the Docklands, then it became Colonial Stadium when it opened. Communications giant Telstra then bought the naming rights several years ago. Starting in March, the ground will be known as Etihad Stadium.  United Arab Emirates airline Etihad Airways has signed a five year sponsorship deal for the naming rights. The deal also has an option for a further five years. The effective date of March coincides with the airline's first flight into Melbourne next year. Etihad Airways also sponsors British soccer team Chelsea, the Ferrari racing team and the English rugby team Harlequins.

Bulldogs Win Bid

Several weeks ago, the Western Bulldogs indicated they would select Ayce Cordy under the father-son rule. However, St. Kilda was also interested in the Geelong Falcons junior and were willing to give up their Round One draft selection (#13 overall) to secure him. Under the bidding rules, the Bulldogs matched St. Kilda's offer of giving up their Round One draft selection (#14 overall) to secure Cordy.  read more »

Setanta Gains First Major Cable Contract

by admincms — Fri, 2008-10-10 20:11 — Last Updated: Mon, 2008-10-13 11:00

Setanta Sports has finally gained distribution on one of the major cable companies in the USA.   It was announced on Wednesday and confirmed today that Setanta will begin appearing on cable systems in northern Virginia owned by Cox Communications.  That will eventually be followed by wider distribution on Cox systems nationwide.  The cost is expected to be similar to that of existing outlets, about $14.99 per month, on a subscription basis.  At this time no definitive schedule for the rollout on Cox has been released but it will likely take several months or more.  Thus it is not known how soon viewers on Cox systems can expect it to be available in their area of the United States (fans are encouraged to call their local Cox cable office but understand that they may not know the local rollout date just yet).  Initial areas to get Setanta will be the Cox systems in Fredericksburg and Fairfax, Virginia.  Cox has indicated Fairfax area fans may subscribe as early as today (ch. 298), and Fredericksburg will follow soon.

Up to this time, Setanta has only been available via satellite, Verizon FiOS, and IPTV systems.  AFANA will provide updated information on our TV pages as it becomes available.

Troubled Didak Still A Pie

We can work it out...

Alan Didak looks set to remain with Collingwood despite being essentially sacked for misconduct just two months ago.

One could be forgiven for being certain that Didak had worn the black and white for the final time after he was suspended by the club for a drink driving accident and his subsequent lies to the football club in August.  read more »
