by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

Telstra Dome Renamed
While it was under construction, the Dome was known as the Docklands, then it became Colonial Stadium when it opened. Communications giant Telstra then bought the naming rights several years ago. Starting in March, the ground will be known as Etihad Stadium. United Arab Emirates airline Etihad Airways has signed a five year sponsorship deal for the naming rights. The deal also has an option for a further five years. The effective date of March coincides with the airline's first flight into Melbourne next year. Etihad Airways also sponsors British soccer team Chelsea, the Ferrari racing team and the English rugby team Harlequins.

Source: Herald Sun

AFL Drug Warning
The league has taken a page from the Olympics and issued a stern warning to clubs. Should a player be found to have taken performance-enhancing drugs which affect the outcome of a game could see the results be changed. Such change could even be retroactive if evidence surfaced later. According to Andrew Demetriou, even finals would come under the rules. Demetriou added that penalties could include the overturning of match results, fines to the club, loss of premiership points and the club being suspended. Retrospective punishment would require evidence against more than one player, but any single player testing positive on match day would allow the league to take immediate punitive action.

Source: abc.net.au

Frawley For CEO
Former Richmond coach Danny Frawley has been appointed to replace former Demon coach Neale Daniher as CEO of the AFL Coaches Association. A fellow Tiger administrator, Paul Armstrong, has also joined the Association as coaching development manager. Daniher stepped down to take up a position as assistant coach with the West Coast Eagles. Former Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy will remain as the Association president.

Source: Melbourne Age

BRISBANE
Star forward Jonathan Brown has been named team captain. He has served as co-captain for the past two seasons with Simon Black, Luke Power, Nigel Lappin and Chris Johnson (in 2007).

Brown has built an impressive leadership CV over that time. In 2007, he was named the AFLPA Best Captain, was vice-captain of the 2007 All-Australian team and captained the Victorian team in the AFL's celebratory Tribute game this past season. He has also been named the AFLPA"s Most Courageous Player for the past two years, won the Coleman Medal in 2007 and has twice won Brisbane's best and fairest award.

New Coach Michael Voss and his coaching panel decided to revert to the traditional policy of one captain after an extensive review. Voss captained the club 2001-2006. He shared the captaincy role with forward Alistair Lynch 1997-2000. Black and Power will continue as part of the leadership group.

The just retired Beau McDonald has replaced former ruckman Clark Keating as ruck coach. Keating had to step down from his position due to his business interests.
The Vodafone Brisbane Lions wish to advise the following changes to the Club's Football Department in

Irish player Colm Begley has been delisted by the club. Begley was nominated as an international rookie in 2005. He played a total of 29 games for the Lions but was restricted to just eight this past season due to a quad injury. Begley will nominate for the national draft. If that fails, he will go into the preseason draft. Should all else fail, he said he would be content to return to Ireland and resume playing Gaelic football and continue his education.
.
Source: afl.com.au & Source: Stephen Buckley, Club Media Release

PORT ADELAIDE
Long time club sponsor Allan Scott passed away in late October at the age of 85. He had been hospitalized and had been ill for several weeks before his death and was surrounded by family at the time of his passing.
Scott, who ran a large trucking firm, was a prominent businessman in South Australia. He began Scott Transport 1952 with just one truck and built it up into a major national and international business. Tributes poured in from all sectors of the community. Club president Greg Boulton said Scott's legacy would always be a part of the club and described Scott as a "hero" of Port Adelaide.

Scott first became involved with Port Adelaide in 1992. He was a joint major sponsor when the club joined the AFL in 1997 and remained a patron of the club. He was awarded life membership last year and helped set up a player development academy at the club, which is named in his honor. The club's training and administration facilities are also named in his honor.

His contributions to Australia, sport and business have also been recognized over the years. In 1986, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia and named South Australian of the Year. In 2006 he was named an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia. He also won awards for his service to the transportation industry and, in 2002, was inducted into the National Road Transport Hall of Fame.

Source: Melbourne Age

NORH MELBOURNE
The club, the only one in the competition to have private stockholders, held a meeting in late October to vote on the issue. Members and shareholders voted to dissolve the stocks and revert to a membership based structure. Voters also voted to uphold a board proposal to put a moratorium on board elections until the end of 2010.

Club Chairman James Brayshaw acknowledged the contributions the shareholders had made to the club over the years but said the interests of the club would be best served in the future by membership support. Sixteen former shareholders were nominated as club patrons while six were nominated for life memberships.

Carey Escapes Jail Sentence
Former North Melbourne and Adelaide star Wayne Carey and his girlfriend Kate Neilson appeared in a Miami court in mid-October. Carey was facing serious charges stemming from an incident in a Miami hotel in which he hit her with a wine glass in the hotel restaurant. Carey said he did not mean to strike her with the glass but only intended to toss the wine over her. Prior to the hearing, she wrote a letter stating she would not press charges.

Security staff called police who entered Carey's room while he was asleep. Carey and his lawyer stated he did not realize they were "...genuine police officers...". His lawyer, Richard Sharpstein, further stated that Carey's fame resulted in the incident getting blown out of proportion and that Carey, who reacted "...as anyone would...:" upon being awoken by strangers in his room, did not mean any harm. At the time, Carey was verbally abusive towards the officers and attacked them and was eventually handcuffed. He was subsequently charged with two counts of battery against police and one count of resisting arrest. He pleaded guilty to all charges and was facing a maximum of 15 years in jail. Instead, he was required to write a letter of apology to the officers, attend anger management and alcohol abuse sessions and donate $500 US dollars to a police benevolent fund.

Carey, however, is still not out of trouble. He will again appear in court, this time in Melbourne next February to face charges of assaulting police (three counts) and resisting arrest at his Port Melbourne apartment. He was arrested last January and had to be subdued with pepper spray after a party at the apartment.

Source: Melbourne Age & John Murphy, Club Media Release

WEST COAST
Former Eagle Ben Cousins has applied to be reinstated with the AFL but will be required to undergo a series of tests to prove he is clean from drugs and has remained so for a significant period of time. One of those tests will be a hair test, which can indicate whether a person is using or not for a much longer period than other standard tests. Cousins will have to face the AFL Commission when they meet in November and they will base their decision on medical opinion and advice. That information will include psychological assessments which will, in part, report on his progress in battling his addiction. Should Cousins be re-registered, he could nominate for either the national draft or the preseason draft.

Source: Melbourne Age

Gold Coast News
The group in charge of putting together the proposed Gold Coast team recently presented the AFL Commission with a 400-page document regarding the support infrastructure and other requirements to obtain the AFL license. Andrew Demetriou described the report, prepared by chairman John Witheroff, board member Graeme Downie (formerly of Brisbane) and Coach Guy McKenna, as "impressive" and noted that they had put in a significant amount of work for months to ensure community and business support of the new team. According to Demetriou, the report also showed "...how an AFL team would return significant economic and social...and...sporting benefits to the...community through increased jobs, greater economic and tourist activity and greater opportunities for local families".

As part of the effort to establish support for the Gold Coast team, the AFL has convinced Carlton, St. Kilda and Richmond to each play a "home" game on the Coast over the next two seasons. It is hoped the move would help boost fan support before the team joins the league in 2011. As compensation to members of the three clubs, who are entitled to 11 games in Melbourne, those members will be allowed free entry to any one designated away game over the two years to replace the Gold Coast games.

The three clubs were decided upon due to the large fan support they have in the area. All three have also attracted large numbers to the games they have played at the Gabba (Brisbane) and the Gold Coast Stadium (Carrara) over the past three years. The star attraction of Carlton's Chris Judd, Tiger Matthew Richardson and St. Kilda's Nick Riewoldt and Sam Gilbert are originally from Queensland as are Tigers Luke McGuane and Andrew Raines. Nick's cousin Jack also plays for Richmond.

Carlton CEO Greg Swann, St. Kilda CEO Archie Fraser and Richmond CEO Steven Wright are all enthusiastic about the prospect of their clubs playing up north. All three were in agreement that it presented an opportunity to further increase their clubs' supporter bases in the area as well as help promote the game.

As further compensation to the existing 16 clubs for the potential loss of players to GC17, the AFL will allow rookie elevations next year. The clubs will not have to have a senior player on the long term injury list to elevate a rookie. The elevations will be allowed from midseason next year and in 2010. In previous seasons, a club only elevate a rookie if a senior player was placed on the long term injury list for a minimum of eight weeks. Once that senior player returned, the rookie have to be dropped back. Currently, clubs without veteran listed players can nominate a rookie to play during the season.

A number of current stars began their careers on the rookie list before becoming senior players. Among them are Eagle Dean Cox, Sydney's Brett Kirk, Port Adelaide's Dean Brogan, Magpie Tarkyn Lockyer and Crow Ben Rutten. The Gold Coast club will have access to 16 uncontracted players plus selections 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 in the 2011 national draft. The current 16 clubs will be allowed compensatory future draft selections for uncontracted players who sign with the new club. The AFL will have a formula in place at that time to determine the draft selection order.

Source: Melbourne Age, canberratimes.com.au, Herald Sun and Patrick Keane, AFL Media Release

RICHMOND
The Tigers are on the verge of signing a guernsey sponsorship deal with AIG (American International Group). This comes in spite of the fact that the company recently received an $85 billion bailout by the US government due to the economic downturn. The American based global insurance and finance company also sponsors British soccer giant Manchester United.

Source: davesfootballblog.com

More Late Season News

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

GEELONG

Rally Around Boys

All clubs have over 30 players on their lists and select whomever they feel will be the best 22 for any given game. In that respect, the Grand Final is no different, which means some players who may have impressed during the season are going to miss out, no matter what contributions they made during the season. It is tough call for the selection panel of a club to tell a player who has served the team well during the year that he has to miss out on the biggest game of the year. According to Geelong defender and team captain Tom Harley, he and his teammates who will be selected for the game, plan to rally around and console those who miss out.

Harley was quoted, "It's not just the 22 guys...on a weekend, you represent the club so it's a team game and a team decision". He further said that he believed the club had a culture which does "...share and care a lot..." and believes those selected can show support for those who are not selected.

Last year, young ruckman Mark Blake, despite some impressive performances, was not selected due to his inexperience. Blake had played 22 games in 2007 and was named as an emergency for the Grand Final. He was very disappointed at missing out on selection for the Grand Final when the club opted for the more experienced duo of Brad Ottens and Steven King. King had been sidelined with a knee injury midseason and played only six games all year. He played in the VFL during Geelong's Preliminary Final but earned a recall to the senior side for the Grand Final, albeit named to the interchange bench.

One player, as of Thursday morning before the game, who is likely to miss is Paul Chapman. Word leaked out of the Geelong camp that Chapman had failed to pass a fitness test for his injured hamstring. However, Coach Mark Williams plans to give Chapman every chance until the last minute to prove his fitness.

Source: Melbourne Age & sen.com.au

NORTH MELBOURNE

North Melbourne Gambling Sanction

The AFL recently concluded an investigation into allegations that North Melbourne board member Ron Joseph placed bets on Kangaroo football games in 2007. As a result the club has been hit with a $50,000 suspended fine and the board members will be required to attend a seminar on gambling and the AFL's rules which prohibit anyone involved in the game at any level from betting of football matches. Joseph, who apologized for what he described as a "...dopey decision" in placing two bets totally $300 on the Kangaroos to win last year's Qualifying Final game against Geelong. He also apologized for the trouble and embarrassment his actions caused the club. The Cats trounced the Kangaroos in that game by 106 points.

Source: Herald Sun

Terrorists Guilty

Six men were found guilty of plotting terrorist attacks in Melbourne in 2005. Twelve men were on trial and four were acquitted while the jury is still out on the other two men. According to testimony, two of the targets were the Australian Formula One Grand Prix and the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the 2005 Grand Final between the Sydney Swans and the West Coast Eagles.

The trial lasted for almost four months with the prosecution presenting evidence that the group, led by Algerian-born Muslim cleric Abdul Nacer Benbrika, planned to use weapons and explosives against their planned targets which also included rail stations with the intent to cause ..."large-scale casualties". Benbrika was found guilty of leading the terrorist group. He was found to be in possession of a CD which detailed preparations for the attack.

While prosecutors painted a picture of a group bent on waging violent jihad, with Benbrika telling his followers at least 1000 deaths would be necessary to persuade Australia to withdraw from Afghanistan and Iran, the defense argued that he and his followers were "...ill-organized, incompetent and prone to exaggeration...".

Australia has not been the target of a modern-day terrorist attack, but 88 Australians were killed in the terrorist bombings of two nightclubs in Bali in October 2002. Some were players from Australian community footy and rugby clubs, also celebrating on their end of season trips. Former Kangaroo Jason McCartney was badly burned as he rescued others from one of the conflagrations. Players from Geelong and Melbourne had been in Bali at the time for their end of season trips. The Geelong players had opted at the time to spend their last night by the hotel pool rather than heading for one of the popular clubs which was bombed. A number of Melbourne players were at the airport at the time for flights home. Former Hawk champion and current media personality Dermott Brereton and a companion had been at one of the bars contemplating one more round before heading for the airport but decided to leave so as not to be late for their flight. Had they remained, they would have been caught in the blast.

Source: nytimes.com & author notes

COLLINGWOOD

Captain Calls It A Day

Collingwood champion Scott Burns announced his retirement this week. Burns, 33, missed out on Collingwood's finals games due to a calf injury and the club will need to select a new captain. Burns' prospects of remaining tied to football are good, with speculation that a number of clubs will be interested in seeking his services as an assistant coach. At least five clubs, including Geelong and Carlton, are interested in offering Burns, a veteran of 264 games, a position.

Burns was appointed captain after Nathan Buckley's retirement last year and it was somewhat controversial with media criticism that 2008 would most likely be his last season, but the club believed he was the right man to lead the club, even if for only one year. Burns played 17 games in 2008 and averaged 20 possessions per game. Likely candidates to replace Burns as captain are Travis Cloke, Nick Maxwell, Scott Pendlebury and Josh Fraser. Cloke had an inconsistent season while Maxwell is still developing as a leader and defender. Pendlebury has only been with the club for two seasons, but has shown leadership skills.

The club has also delisted Brodie Holland, Sam Iles and Chris Egan.

Holland, 28, was drafted by Fremantle in 1997. He played 36 games and kicked 37 goals for the Dockers 1998-2000 before being traded to Collingwood where he played a further 155 games and kicked 141 goals. Holland is hoping to continue his career next year with another club.

Tasmanian-born Iles, 21, was drafted by the pies in the 2005 preseason draft. he debuted late in 2006 and played a total of seven games over two seasons. He did not manage any senior games in 2008.

Egan, 21, was drafted in 2004 but played just 24 games in two years. He played only one game in 2006 due to a knee injury and played just two games in 2008.

Club Introduces Online Training

Collingwood has introduced a new training resource program. The online program, supplied by a company called Learning Seat, is tailored to meet the needs of the club and provides a variety of programs for all areas and employees of the club. The club has 400 training programs which can be used by Finance, Membership, Administration, Marketing, the coaching staff and players. There are also programs covering gaming and corporate compliance.

According to club CEO Gary Pert, the programs provide training and development opportunities for all employees of the club which otherwise might be too expensive or impractical. According to Pert, the training programs will also allow employees to access current industry "....insights and regulations...". Player education programs include the. club's drug and alcohol policies. Other courses provided by Learning Seat cover Occupational Health & Safety; Ethics and Conduct; Conflict Resolution and Emergency Management.

Source: Source: Nick Hulett, Club Media Release, Herald Sun & ebroadcast.com.au

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Veteran Axed

The Western Bulldogs have delisted veteran Scott West. According to Coach Rodney Eade, the match committee made the decision as the club wants to focus on bringing through younger players. Eade described the end of West's career as frustrating as West has missed much of the season with a knee injury and finished the year playing in the VFL.

Coach Rodney Eade said West had been "...outstanding....for 17 years...leading by example...on and off the field" He described West as an integral member of the leadership group and said West was one of the all-time great Bulldogs.

SCOTT WEST
Debut: 1993
Games: 324
Goals: 104

Honors: 1993 Rising Star nominee; club best and fairest 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003-2005 (club record); All-Australian 1998, 2000, 2004-2006; International Rules Series 1999-2000; Brownlow runner-up 2000 & 2006.

West was so close and yet so far in 2000 and 2006 for the Brownlow Medal. He polled 24 votes vs Shane Woewodin's 26 in 2000 and fell 3 votes short of Adam Goodes' 26 in 2006.

Source: Stacey Mair, Club Media Release & AFL Record Season Guide 2007 & 2008

SYDNEY

Clubs Cool On Knee Treatment

As reported previously, Sydney Swan Nick Malceski underwent a radical knee treatment which uses artificial fibers instead of the patient's own tissue for grafting. In his case, the treatment known as LARS (Ligament Augmentation And Reconstruction System) was a total success with Malceski returning to play after just a few months. However, his success has not convinced other clubs that the treatment is the way to go. Dr. Hugh Seward, president of the AFL Medical Officers Association said the treatment was still too new and not enough reports of success to be universally embraced.

Geelong considered the treatment for Brent Prismall, who injured his knee in the Qualifying Final against St. Kilda but decided against it. Prismall will undergo the standard reconstruction process which will sideline him until late next season. Fremantle's Luke Webster also underwent the LARS treatment but his recovery was unsuccessful and he was force to retire last month. Webster made a brief comeback after three months, but required a second surgery on the knee. A Melbourne Storm rugby player also tried the LARS treatment but was hospitalized several times in the month following the procedure due to an infection in the knee.

Source: Canberra Times

Barry For The Defense

Sydney Swan defender "Leaping" Leo Barry has signed a one year contract, but has already indicated that 2009 would be his last season. Barry debuted for the Swans in 1995 and has played 234 games. Barry said he would enjoy every game of his final season and is sure he can still contribute, a sentiment echoed by Coach Paul Roos, who played alongside Barry for four seasons (1995-98) after crossing from Fitzroy). Roos said Barry was still one of the best 22 for 2009 and believes Barry can also help with the development of the team's young defenders, a sentiment echoed by Barry, who agreed with Roos that the club is in a period of transition with veterans nearing the end and young players coming through.

Barry, who co-captained the club 2005-2007 and won All-Australian honors in 2004 and 2005, is perhaps best remembered for his game-saving mark (catch of the ball) in the dying seconds of the 2005 Grand Final. West Coast had won possession with less than a minute left and Sydney leading by four points. Eagle ruckman Cox kicked long to the goalsquare where a pack of players had formed. Barry lived up to his nickname as he came from nowhere to fly in front of the pack to pluck the ball away from the outstretched hands of teammates and opponents alike. Seconds later, as Barry was walking back to take his kick, the siren sounded to end Sydney's 72 year premiership drought. He still has the ball as a souvenir.

Source: Tara White, Club Media Release, AFL Record Season Guide 2008, author notes

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

TRIBUNAL

Charges Laid:

Max Rooke (GEEL): rough conduct against North Melbourne’s Sam Power: assessed as negligent conduct (one point), high impact (three points) and body contact (one point), equaling five activation points, a Level Three offense, 225 demerits and a two game suspension. His previous record of one game suspended within the past three years increases the penalty 10% to 247.50 demerits, still a two-game suspension. He accepted, reducing the penalty 25% to 185.63 demerits and a one game suspension.

Michael Firrito (NM), making an obscene gesture: fined $1200 for a first offense. He accepted, reducing the fine 25% to $900.

The match day report against Adelaide's Chris Knights for rough conduct against St Kilda's Shane Birss was assessed by the Match Review Panel. The MRP ruled that the contact was caused by circumstances beyond Knights’ control as he was pushed from behind and therefore not at fault. The charge was dismissed.

Source: Patrick Keane, AFL Media Release

Robert Harvey Heads Retirement List

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

Robert Harvey

St. Kilda champion Robert Harvey announced that he would retire at the end of the season. Harvey, who said telling his teammates was the hardest thing he had ever done, said he believed it was the right time to step aside to give younger players a chance and also said he was looking forward to spending more time with his wife and children. Harvey, who started his career at the age of 16 in 1988 described the Saints as his second family and the club as his second home. He believes the club is in good hands and confident of future success. At one stage, he joked that he might put in an appearance or two at preseason training....."just to keep fit..."

Harvey thanked his family for their support and thanked the club and supporters. Of his family, he said they had put up with a lot, but were always supportive. Of the club he said he was honored to have stretched out his career as long as did and would like to be remembered as someone who gave his all for and loved the club. He praised the supporters as some of the most passionate around and described that passion as inspirational and a big factor in why he kept going for so long.

Coach Ross Lyon, who actually played against Harvey during his playing days with Fitzroy, praised Harvey as one of the most respected and admired players in the game and described him as a consummate professional. He went on to say that Harvey would be remembered as a "...selfless team player who did whatever it took for the Saints to be successful...". He said Harvey would be greatly missed but well remembered by all fans. Carlton Coach Brett Ratten was a contemporary of Harvey's during their junior days. He described Harvey as a great role model and absolute champion and went on to say, "The game will miss Robert Harvey." Coach Lyon urged all fans to come out to the last few games to pay tribute to Harvey.

AFL boss Andrew Demetriou also lauded Harvey, thanking him for his contribution to the game. He said watching Harvey play was a pleasure for all fans and further praised Harvey's commitment to club and teammates. He continued, "...Harvey has been an example of sportsmanship, skill and dedication and...one of the great ambassadors for our competition" He said Harvey would bow out as one of the game's great champions and described his consistency to that of Tiger and Hawthorn greats Kevin Bartlett and Michael Tuck.

Harvey, 36, will be listed third on the all-time games list after Round 21. Round 22, should Harvey play all the remaining games, will be his 380th, just behind Michael Tuck (426) and Kevin Bartlett (403). He is also the only player in league history to poll Brownlow votes in 100 games or more and, prior to Round 19, had a career total of 305 votes.

ROBERT HARVEY
Draft: Recruited by St Kilda from its VCFL zone in 1988
Debut: 1988
Games: 376 (through Round 18)
Goals: 213 (through Round 18)

Honors: Brownlow Medal 1997, 1998; All-Australian 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003; Club Best and Fairest 1992, 1994, 1997, 1998; preseason premierships 1996, 2004, 2008; Michael Tuck Medal (best on ground in preseason premiership) 2004; EJ Whitten Medal (Victoria's best on ground in State of Origin games) 1992, 1993, 1996; AFLPA MVP 1997; International Rules Series 1998.

Source: Matt Schmidt, Club Media Release & Melbourne Age

Fraser Gehrig

Not unexpectedly, forward Fraser Gehrig announced his retirement after his comeback this season with the Saints was unsuccessful. Gehrig announced his retirement at the end of the 2007 season, but decided to give it one more shot after just one month. Gehrig, due to arthritis in his hands which was aggravated in wet and/or cold weather, played just five games this year and the club put him on the long-term injury list in May after he underwent hand surgery. Gehrig said he had no regrets about his attempted comeback, but does regret not having had the chance to play in a premiership team.

Gehrig debuted for West Coast in 1995 and played 115 games and kicked 159 goals before joining St. Kilda at the end of 2000. He was West Coast's leading goalkicker in 1998 and won a Rising Star nomination in 1995. Gehrig played 145 games with the Saints and kicked 390 goals for St. Kilda. He led the club's goalkicking 2003-2007 and won the Coleman Medal in 2004 and 2005. Gehrig won St. Kilda's best and fairest award in 2001 and was named All-Australian in 1997 and 2004. He played in St. Kilda's 2004 preseason premiership.

Source: afl.com.au

Heath Black

Fremantle's Heath Black, sidelined with a shoulder injury, announced his retirement ahead of the Round 19 game. Black, who has played just six games in 2008, said injuries had finally caught up with him. He also had an injury-interrupted preseason and had been considering the decision to retire all year.

Black was drafted by the Dockers in 1996 and played 15 games in his first season in 1997. That year, he earned a Rising Star nomination, but injuries restricted him to just one game in 1998. He bounced back and finished as runner-up to Peter Bell in the club's 2001 best and fairest award. He was then traded to St. Kilda where he spent three seasons before requesting a trade back to Fremantle at the end of 2004. He played every game in 2005 and missed just one game in 2006. He was an integral part of the team's two finals appearances. His start to 2007 was again disrupted by injury but he again came back to win the 2007 Best Clubman Award. Black said one of the things he would miss the most was the camaraderie with his teammates. He also said the highlight of his career was playing in the preliminary finals with the Saints and Fremantle.

Club CEO Steve Rosich acknowledged the contributions and sacrifices Black had made for the club. Black, who was contracted through the end of next season, came to an amicable agreement with the club through his management.

HEATH BLACK
Games 192 (138 with Fremantle), 54 with St. Kilda)
Finals: 5
Goals: 80 (61 with Fremantle, 19 with St. Kilda)
Honors: Runner-Up Doig Medal 2001; Best Clubman 2007; Rising Star nominee 1997; International Rules Series 2005; South Fremantle premiership team 1997

Luke Webster

Fremantle Docker Luke Webster told the club he would not renew his contract next year. Webster, who underwent his fourth knee reconstruction in April, said he wanted to step aside to make room for younger players and was unsure if he would continue playing next year. Webster played 33 games for the Dockers since his debut in 2003 and won the Best Clubman Award in 2006. He was also one of the best on ground in Fremantle's historic first final against Essendon in 2003.

Jeff Farmer

After discussions with Fremantle Coach Mark Harvey and Football Operations Manager Chris Bond, Jeff Farmer has decided to retire after a 14 year career which began with the Melbourne Demons. Farmer thanked both the Demons and the Dockers for giving him the opportunities he has had over the years as well as the loyalty of the fans.

Harvey and club CEO Steve Rosich both acknowledged Farmer's contribution to the club. Harvey said Farmer was the type of player fans came to see while Rosich described Farmer as an exciting player and a fan favorite. Rosich also said the club would help Farmer in any way they could to help him make the transition from playing into retirement. Farmer retires as the leading indigenous goalkicker of all time with 483 career goals. He is also second on Fremantle's goalkicking list with 224 since joining the club in 2002.

Farmer debuted in 1995 and played seven games. He was a Rising Star nominee in 1996 and was also a finalist contender for Goal of the Year. He won the Goal of the Year award in 1997 and was runner-up for Mark of the Year in 1997.He also represented Australia in the International Rules Series.

Ironically, Fremantle traded away their draft pick which would have secured Farmer to Melbourne.

JEFF FARMER
Drafted by Melbourne 1994
Debut: 1995
Games: 118
Goals: 259

Traded to Fremantle 2001
Debut: 2002
Games; 131
Goals: 224
Finals Games: 10

Playing Honors: AFL Rising Star nominee 1996, International Rules series 1998, All-Australian 2000, Melbourne leading goalkicker 1997, WA State of Origin team 2005-2006

Source: Luke Morfesse, Club Media Release

Shannon Grant

North Melbourne Kangaroo Shannon Grant, who played his 300th game in Round 22, announced his retirement just before the first week of the Finals. Grant was taking longer and longer for him to recover after games. Coach Dean Laidley has already spoken to Grant about an off-field role with the club.

Originally drafted by Sydney, Grant was traded to the Kangaroos for Wayne Schwass. He quickly established himself as an effective midfielder with a knack for kicking goals. He won the club's best and fairest award in 2001, and placed second three other times (2003, '04, '05). He was also named in the All-Australian side in 2005. Grant played in the 1999 premiership and won the Norm Smith Medal as best on ground. He was also a member of the Kangaroos' 1998 preseason premiership team.

Source: Herald Sun

Jess Sinclair

North Melbourne Kangaroo Jess Sinclair announced his retirement several days after the team lost to Sydney in a Qualifying Final. While the senior team is done for the year, Sinclair will have more chance playing for North's VFL affiliate Werribee in their finals series. He will then take some time off from football as he is getting married in January, but he would like to stay involved with the game at some level.

Sinclair was originally drafted by the Fremantle Dockers and played 50 games there before joining the Kangaroos via the trade for Peter Bell. He played 142 games for the Kangaroos as a hard-running defender. North Melbourne's football manager Donald McDonald acknowledged Sinclair's contribution to the club, praising his committment and work ethic and said Jess was one of the hardest trainers at the club, setting a great example for the younger players. McDonald also said Sinclair was a respected and popular player with the club and should be proud of his achievements.

Sinclair reciprocated and was equally effusive in his praise and gratitude to the Kangaroos for their support. He said the club was like a second family to him and that he was looking forward to seeing them succeed on the field.

JESS SINCLAIR
Games: 192
Goals: 71
AFL Rising Star Nominee 1998

Source: John Murphy, Club Media Release

Nathan Bassett

Adelaide Crows' defender Nathan Bassett announced his retirement. Bassett was originally drafted by Melbourne in 1997 but traded to the Crows at the end of the year. He debuted for Adelaide in 1998 and, through Round 22 this year, played 209 games. He missed out on Adelaide's 1998 Grand Final triumph through injury, but did play in the club's 2003 preseason premiership. He played every game this year and just the eighth Crow to notch 200 games, joining Mark Ricciuto, Ben Hart, Andrew McLeod , Tyson Edwards, Nigel Smart, Mark Bickley and Simon Goodwin.

Bassett was runner-up for the club champion award in 2005 and the following year was named as a back pocket in the All Australian team. He has been a member of Adelaide’s leadership group since 2005. He is also a director on the Crows Foundation Board and a Life Member of the club.

Club CEO Steven Trigg paid tribute to Bassett for his leadership, onfield courage and contribution to the team and club.

Source: David Burtenshaw, Club Media Release

Nathan Ablett

Geelong's Nathan Ablett, who walked out on the club after their premiership win last year, has informed the club he does not want to continue his AFL career. The club gave Ablett time off earlier this year to consider his options. He did return briefly to play for the Geelong Falcons in the VFL and the club was hoping he would return to senior football next year. He was later sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained while playing basketball.

The reclusive Ablett, the youngest of the Ablett clan, told the club he wants to head north to build a career in the building industry. Club president Frank Costa said that, while the club is disappointed as they believe he would be a great player, they respected his decision. Ablett played a total of 32 games for Geelong, including the 2007 premiership win.

Source: afl.com.au

Ben Matthews

On the eve of the finals, Sydney Swan Ben Matthews announced his retirement, saying he felt he was losing his passion and enthusiasm and did not wish to reach a point of letting his teammates down. He also said he felt he had given everything he could. Coach Paul Roos praised Matthews' contribution to the club and made special mention of his performance in the 2005 premiership win. In his prime, Everitt was a top ruckman and could also play up forward. A colorful character, in more ways than one with tattoos on his arms and shoulders, Everitt began his 291 game career with St. Kilda in 1993 and has the distinction of being the first player ever to be nominated for the Rising Star Award in Round 1 of that year. He played 180 games and kicked 299 goals for the Saints 1993-2002 before being traded to Hawthorn. He played 72 games and kicked 67 goals for the Hawks 2003-2006 and was then traded to Sydney. For several years, Everitt was also a regular panelist on The Footy Show.

Honors: St. Kilda best and fairest 2001; St. Kilda leading goalkicker 2000; Hawthorn best and fairest 2004; All-Australian 1997-98 and 2000; International Rules 1998; St. Kilda preseason premiership 1996.

Source: The Australian & 2008 AFL Record Season Guide

Around The AFL

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

Richmond's Irish Proposal

In an effort to ease tensions over Irish Gaelic footballers being recruited to Australian Football, the Tigers have come up with a plan. That plan would involve an exchange program in which players from both codes who fail to make it at the elite level in their own sport would change codes. Richmond CEO Greg Miller and prominent player agent Peter Jess are planning to meet with GAA officials in early October to discuss the idea. According to Miller, the plan would allow Irish players to play for local footy clubs in Australia while visiting for work, study and/or travel. By the same token, Australian players could do the same in Ireland.

Source: independent.ie

Expand Interchange Bench

After Adelaide players Brett Burton and Jason Porplyzia suffered serious injuries in the Round 15 match against Collingwood, Magpie Coach Mick Malthouse has once again called upon the AFL to increase the interchange bench from four to six players. He would like to see the extra two players used to replace players who suffer game ending injuries. The move would allow teams to maintain an adequate interchange bench instead of depleting the team compliment.

Burton will miss the rest of the season due to a ruptured knee ligament, requiring a knee reconstruction. Porplyzia dislocated his shoulder. Those injuries meant the Crows then had only two players on the interchange bench.

Source: canberratimes.com.au

Michael Voss Joins Eagles

Former Brisbane champion Michael Voss rejected a three year deal to coach the new Gold Coast AFL team, which is planned to launch in 2011. Voss wanted a five year deal, believing he would need that long to really develop and establish the team. He has since signed a two year deal as an assistant coach with the West Coast Eagles. He believes the position will be beneficial to any senior coaching plans in the future. He has not completely ruled out taking on the Gold Coast job.

Voss will take up the role and move from Queensland to Perth in October. He is currently involved with the media and will see out that commitment before joining the Eagles.

Source: Melbourne Age

Cousins To Play VFL

Disgraced former Eagle Ben Cousins had his request and registration approved by the AFL. Cousins, who was deregistered and suspended by the AFL for "bringing the game into disrepute" has joined VFL team Port Melbourne, but is not expected to play senior football this year. He is currently training with WAFL clubs East Fremantle and Perth and will relocate to Melbourne next month. Cousins began his playing career with East Fremantle and his father Bryan played 240 games for the club.

Cousins' battle with substance abuse and addiction has been well chronicled and he was sacked by the Eagles last year, then faced the AFL Commission. He has since undergone rehab to overcome his addiction, but admitted he still has to overcome difficulties associated with addiction.

Source: watoday.com.au

Carey Plea Rejected

Wayne Carey's request for a diversion program, in which he would plead guilty and accept a court penalty rather than conviction and jail time, was turned down by the Melbourne Magistrates Court in late June. Diversion is usually granted to first-time offenders. However, Carey has previous offenses and he has been scheduled to appear in court early next month to face charges stemming from a domestic dispute in January. At the time, he was charged with assaulting police officers and resisting arrest.

The former North Melbourne champion is also facing similar charges in Miami and was due to face US court this month. That hearing has also been delayed at the request of his lawyer. Should Carey be found guilty, he could face up to 15 years in US jail.

Source: Herald Sun

2008 International Cup

Sixteen teams from around the world will be heading for Australia in August to compete in the third Australian Rules International Cup.The games will take place August 27-September 6 with the Grand Final to be played at the MCG.

The participating nations are: Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, Great Britain, Ireland, India, Japan, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peace Team, Samoa, South Africa, Sweden and the USA. It will be the first participation by China, China, Finland, India, Peace Team, Sweden.

The first tournament was held in 2002 with only 11 teams competing. Since then, according to AFL Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan, there are now over 35,000 players in almost 40 countries.
Dockers Give Hoodoo Heave Ho

Janet Linn, reporting for AFANA from Subiaco Oval

True to the words of their theme song, the Fremantle Dockers conquered the psychological hoodoo that has haunted them for the past six weeks and gave the North Melbourne Kangaroos the “old heave-ho” at Subiaco Oval on Saturday. Their 53 point thrashing of the Kangaroos was their best performance of the season so far and although it may not be enough to silence some hometown critics, it has breathed life into a club which was on the verge of imploding. During the week, coach Mark Harvey had described Fremantle as “dangerous” which raised the eyebrows of anyone who had watched recent Docker games. In retrospect, Harvey’s comment may have spurred his team on and boosted their determination to overcome consecutive final quarter fizzles. In contrast, coach Dean Bailey must be concerned by the inconsistent levels of skill and enthusiasm displayed by North Melbourne for most of the game.

It was a perfect day for football at Subiaco Oval. The first quarter was completely dominated by Fremantle. With Roger Hayden back from injury to lend pace and experience to the backline, the Dockers were able to repel the majority of forward thrusts by the Kangaroos. The Dockers tackling was ferocious and they scored first blood through Chris Tarrant who looked dangerous up forward. Aaron Sandilands had control of the ruck hitouts and small men Josh Carr, Rhys Palmer, Byron Schammer and Brett Peake were in excellent form. In spite of their high possession count, the Dockers were still prone to overuse of the ball and there were a number of suicide handballs and turnovers which gave the Kangaroos opportunities to attack. Unfortunately for the Roos, they could not penetrate past the half forward line. The absence of Nathan Thompson and Corey Jones had a significant impact on their ability to take clean possession in the forward line and make the most of their few scoring chances. The pressure exerted by Fremantle was their best this season and North’s skill level cracked under its intensity. Goals to David Mundy, Matthew Pavlich and Jeff Farmer gave Fremantle a 29 point advantage at the break.

Disaster struck for the Kangaroos in the first minute of the second quarter when Hamish McIntosh limped off the ground injured and played no further part in the game. Lindsay Thomas reacted by kicking the first two goals of the quarter and Freo were challenged for the first time in the game. Some great running play by Peake gave Peter Bell a shot on goal and he put through a steadier for the Dockers. A classy passage of play featuring Damien Harris, Daniel Wells and Matt Campbell saw another six pointer through for North Melbourne. This period of the game was fast and lively with both teams locked in a tight contest. With the Kangaroos lifting, Fremantle faltered, over handling the footy and wasting disposals. A good goal off the pack from Palmer steadied the Dockers. Fremantle began to play very defensively in their forward line and the Kangaroos had trouble clearing the ball from their defensive 50. Pavlich eventually capitalized on their mistakes and scored his third and fourth goals in the latter part of the quarter taking Fremantle into the long break with a 39 point lead.

It was all Fremantle in the third quarter. Garrick Ibbotson opened the goal-kicking at the two minute mark and North looked flat-footed and lacking in structure, particularly in the forward line. Pavlich kicked his fifth and Fremantle continued to tackle like men possessed. After North gave away a 50 meter penalty, Pavlich scored his seventh goal, answering his critics loud and clear and taking Fremantle to a ten goal lead. With Freo players streaming all over the ground, the Roos looked lost and lackluster. Playing tentatively and with no confidence whatsoever, they were repeatedly caught holding the ball and had no targets to kick towards in front of goal.

With Freo fourth quarter fadeouts the story of their season so far, the pressure was on to show resilience and keep control of the game until the end. A quick Tarrant goal signaled their intention to do just that. The Kangaroos lifted and showed some early resistance with goals through Brent Harvey, Ed Lower, Leigh Brown and Leigh Harding reducing the deficit to 48 points. Chances went begging when Daniel Wells missed two shots. Jeff Farmer inspired his team mates with great running, handing Chris Mayne a goal on a plate. With a superb interception of a short North Melbourne pass across goal, Farmer again gave the Dockers the belief they needed as he put the last nail in the Roos’ coffin and the fourth quarter hoodoo to rest.

It was a disappointing and lethargic display by North Melbourne who dropped to ninth position on the AFL Ladder and meet the high-flying Hawthorn in Round 13. Fremantle were impressive in a good team effort and fly to Melbourne midweek to play Saint Kilda in a Friday night game at the Telstra Dome.

New Interchange Rules

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

The recent interchange foul-up during the Sydney-North Melbourne game which led to 19 players being on the ground has led the AFL to introduce new interchange rules. The changes were trialed this week and will be in full effect as of Round Nine. A new "holding" area will be established in front of the team benches and there will be two interchange stewards to monitor interchanges. One steward will be assigned to each team.

Interchange procedures will also be more stringently enforced. As before, team officials will notify the steward of an impending change. Once the steward approves, the player will move to the "holding" area and will remain their until the player he is to replace has come off the ground through the interchange area.

Breaches will be penalized by a free kick to the opposition. Breaches which result in a free kick are:

*19 players on the field, such as would happen if the replacement player enters the field before his teammate has left the playing area

*A player enters the field before his interchange is approved by the interchange steward

*A player does not enter or leave the playing area the interchange area (previously he was disqualified from participating in the remainder of the match).

*The free kick will be taken from wherever play was stopped or from the center circle, whichever is the greater penalty against the offending team. A 50 meter penalty would also be given.

NOTE: The only possible exception to this is if a player is injured. Several years ago, the AFL modified the interchange rule to allow an injured player to leave the field from the nearest boundary line so as not to hold up play while he made his way or was assisted by trainers to the designated interchange area.

Source: Michelle Clyne, AFL Media Release & author notes

The AFLPA Hardship Fund will receive $100,000. The Past Player Hardship Fund was set up several years ago to assist past players with medical expenses and to date has distributed over $80,000. The Fund is run by the AFLPA Past Players Advisory Board, chaired by AFLPA Executive Committee Member Simon Madden.

The organization Ladder will also receive $100,000. Ladder is an initiative which targets youth homelessness and provides housing, employment, education and mentoring for homeless youth. The program is currently working to set up facilities in Melbourne and Adelaide and is hoping to go national. AFL players will also be involved, receiving training to help mentor those in the program.

RedLink will receive $50,000. Redlink is a non-profit organization which works to set up sports and recreation for the disadvantaged. They currently sponsor almost 30 teams in remote Victorian and the Northern Territory communities. RedLink is looking to expand services to central Australia.

Source: Jason Murnane, AFLPA Media Release

Carey To Court

Wayne Carey will appear in a Melbourne court later this month to face a number of charges stemming from his arrest in January after a party at his Port Melbourne apartment. He is facing six counts of assaulting police officers and resisting arrest.

The Miami court date is set for late July and Carey could face up to 15 years in jail. His attorney said Carey is maintaining his innocence. Both he and his lawyer have refused a plea deal of one year in jail. Should he fail to appear, he would be subject to immediate arrest if he enters the USA in the future.

Carey, 36, played 272 games for the Kangaroos and Adelaide Crows. He was forced to resign from the Kangaroos at the start of the 2002 season after his affair with vice-captain Anthony Stevens' wife was revealed. He remained on the Kangaroos' list for the season for salary cap and trade reasons, but did not play. He joined the Crows in 2003 but managed just 28 games in two injury-riddled seasons.

Source: Melbourne Age & author notes

Lloyd Costs Bombers $5000

Essendon has been fined $5000 for Matthew Lloyd's approach to the umpires during Essendon's match against Port Adelaide. Lloyd was instructed by Coach Matthew Knights to ask the umpires why several tackles by his team were not rewarded with free kicks.

AFL rules prohibit any player from approaching the umpires during breaks or when they are leaving or entering the ground.

Source: Herald Sun

Grand Final Terrorist Target?

A dozen men are currently on trial in Melbourne for allegedly planning terrorist attacks in Melbourne. One of the targets was to be the MCG during the 2005 Grand Final between West Coast and Sydney. The alleged leader of the planned attacks, Abdul Nacer Benbrika, told key witness Izzydeen Atik of the planned attacks.

According to Atik, the MCG attack was canceled after raids by Australian Security Intelligence resulted in funds being seized. Atik testified that Benbrika and his group also planned attacks during the 2006 AFL NAB Preseason Cup and Melbourne Grand Prix.

Source: Sydney Morning Herald

Tigers Membership Record

Richmond has broken their all-time club membership. The club still has 3500 members who have yet to renew.

While fans can continue to sign up as members throughout the season, the official AFL cut-off date for recording club memberships is June 30.

Source: Judith Donnelly, Club Media Release & author notes

Gehrig Battles Arthritis

Coach Ross Lyon revealed last week that full forward Fraser Gehrig has arthritis in his hands. According to Lyon, numerous broken fingers and dislocations are partly the cause. In warm weather, his hands are OK, but in the cold and wet weather of the football season, the arthritis is more bothersome. Although Gehrig can still catch the ball, he has trouble handling it at ground level.

Lyon described Gehrig's attitude regarding the arthritis as "stoic" and said Gehrig does not like to talk about his injuries and has played while hurt in the past. In 2007, he played half the season with a broken bone in his hand. Several years ago, he played with a planter fascia tear (foot injury) for several weeks.

Gehrig played 115 games with West Coast before being traded to the Saints in 2000.

NOTE: If the arthritis is only in his hands due to numerous injuries, it is probably osteoarthritis, which only affects joints which have been severely traumatized by injury. It does not spread to other joints in the body or become increasingly debilitating as is the case with rheumatoid arthritis - ed.

Source: The Australian
