Critics of the West Coast Eagles have been silenced after a hard fought win over St Kilda. Commentators had declared the Eagles soft, saying their successful season start was because they had only played teams outside the Top Eight. In Round 8, with a forward line decimated through injury, the Eagles stood up and regained their position on top of the table. Not that it was easy, with the Saints mounting a solid challenge interstate. read more »
Sydney's Adam Goodes, who missed Round 4 due to suspension, played his 304th game in Round 5. This takes him past former champion and teammate Michael O'Loughlin. The Sydney pair is behind former Adelaide champion Andrew McLeod (340 games) for most games played by an indigenous player. read more »
This is the second in a series of what Australian Rules football fans have to look forward to as the 2012 season approaches.
After a messy 2011 that featured player scandals, reputations on the line and a coach leaving for greener (some might say purple) pastures, the Saints have quietly ushered in a new era under incoming coach Scott Watters. read more »

After looking at potential catalysts for Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn and West Coast in Part 1, AFANA turns its attention to the remaining four Finals' combatants, Sydney, Essendon, Carlton and St Kilda. Who are the “under the radar” players to watch out for as Week One of the Finals approaches?
Australian Rules Football lost one of its legends this week when Allan Jeans passed away. Jeans was the coach who took St Kilda to their only Premiership in over 100 years. It was going to be an emotional game for the Saints and these occasions can make for either inspiring wins or lamentable losses. St Kilda took the bull by the horns and ripped right into the West Coast Eagles in a cracking first quarter. read more »
Saint Kilda was the firm favorite with the bookmakers on a warm and clear night at the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the first game of Round 2 of the AFL season. Rain was forecast for late in a game that was billed as a clash of the forwards with the Riewoldt cousins (Nick and Jack) facing off. This game marked the first time that Richmond and St Kilda have played a Friday night game on the MCG. read more »
It rained all Saturday, in stark contrast to Friday night when the Magpies played under summer skies with the roof open at Etihad and Melbourne looed resplendent as the world's second most livable city. Today she was in a different mood. As the wintery winds swirled and the rain pitched down at skewed angles, there was a sense of foreboding in the air. read more »
A week is a long time in football, as the saying goes, well try 40 years. It's that long since the League trialled a shortened version of the game with a round robin format called the Lightning Premiership. Decades later and for the early rounds of the NAB Cup the lightning format was back. read more »
The 2010 Grand Final had all the drama of Australia's real reality television, Australian Rules Football. The last Saturday of September delivered an anti-climax in a drawn match. Under the current AFL rules, a replay was called and had to be played the following week. read more »
The Western Sydney Giants have signed former Carlton fullback Stephen Silvagni as the club's list manager. Silvagni will play a key role in putting together the team list ahead of their 2012 entry into the AFL. Silvagni has been an assistant coach with St. Kilda for the past four seasons. read more »
