It all leads to that last Saturday in September...
All week the AFL circus-circus was in town. Victorians had an air of satisfaction because it was only the second time this century that two Victorian clubs were in the Finals. Footy after all has been ‘Our Game’ for the last century and a half and now an ‘All Victorian Final’ somehow just seemed right. Grand Final Week started off with Brownlow night, where Bulldog Adam Cooney took the honors from Geelong’s Gary Ablett, Brisbane Lion Simon Black and crowd favorite Tiger Matthew Richardson read more »
Outplayed, pure and simple
'History is coming'…the catch cry of the AFL’s 150th year finals celebration. The last time Geelong and Hawthorn met in a Grand Final was in 1989 and back then against the run of play the Hawks took home the ‘chocolates’, would this year see another finals upset? Geelong was out for big time revenge. On ‘Home and Away’ form the Hawks had the wood on the Cats, despite the Cats win in round 17. Hawthorn was ominous then and although the Cats were without their key midfielders of Ablett, Ling and Milburn, they prevailed. Hawks have won 3 of the last 5 encounters and Geelong, 40 of their last 42 matches. The key to this match were the injury concerns - Trent Croad, still had a suspected broken foot and Luke Hodge’s fractured ribs were the key for the Hawks read more »

Memories, old and new
He played for Geelong for 11 years but Mark Yeates is best remembered for firing the first shot in the 1989 Grand Final when he flattened Hawk star Dermott Brereton at the opening bounce. Brereton played out the game despite suffering a bruised kidney and internal bleeding from the hit. Needless to say, Yeates is in demand this week with the Hawks and Cats set to face off in a Grand Final for the first time since that bruising battle. Brereton was the first of many casualties from that game. Others included Robert DiPierdomenico (cracked ribs and punctured lung), John Platten (concussion) and Michael Tuck (hand) among others. read more »
