Eagles Hit Finals Form Against Crows

Rick Browner reporting for AFANA from Patersons Stadium, Perth

West Coast has lost only one game of its last 12 and continues to be the surprise package of the 2012 home and away season. The Adelaide Crows have been struggling and faced their worst finish in the club’s history with only seven wins. Rain bucketed down as the game got under way and whilst this was a blessing to a dry and parched Western Australia, it made for slippery, wet conditions at the football.

In a close start to the game, both teams were hard and committed at the ball and not taking a relaxed approach given that the Ladder was decided before the match. Most of the play was in the Eagles’ forward half and their press was working well. Despite this dominance, scoring was minimal with the bad weather having a detrimental effect on skills. The Crows were playing two men back in defense and this caused the play to become congested and slow. Adelaide was also applying good tackling pressure and took the game right up to the Eagles. It wasn’t until the last seven minutes of the quarter that the Eagles scored. Nic Naitanui took a strong mark and the handball off to Mark Nicoski put the first major on the board. Naitanui dominated in the last minutes of the quarter, tackling and flying for marks to give the home side a real presence in the forward half. He leapt a mile into the air only to have the ball slip through his fingers to a waiting Brad Ebert who kicked from inches out to give the Eagles a 17 point lead at the end of the quarter. The hapless Crows were yet to score.

Naitanui – the one man highlight reel - kicked the first goal of the second term after he read the ball off hands in the goal square. Kurt Tippett finally put the visitors on the board when he capitalized on a turnover by Beau Waters. Scott Thompson led by example, winning the ball and applying defensive pressure but he had sparse support from his team mates. Although Adelaide players were determined at the hard ball gets, they were going backwards on the scoreboard. The Eagles kicked the next three goals to take a good lead and stamp their authority on the match. Too many Crows players were drifting back to help out in defense but then lacked the run forward when they took possession of the ball. In their best passage of play for the game, Jared Petrenko goaled from 40 yards out when, against the flow, the ball moved crisply from the back into the Crows’ forward 50 meter arc. Petrenko was one of the Crows' more steadfast players and he was resolute in his attacking efforts. Unfortunately for the Crows, this was all they could muster for the quarter and the Eagles kicked the next four in a row to effectively stitch up the game. No build up was better than Andrew Embley’s run and goal from 40 yards out as he showed signs of his form in West Coast’s Premiership year (2006). The Eagles took a commanding 52 point lead into the second half.

With only pride left to play for, Adelaide came out after half time with increased determination. They had an early chance when Sam Jacobs took a shot after a 50 meter penalty but missed. They made amends soon after when Sam Butler turned the ball over and Bernie Vince made the Eagles pay. Naitanui showed why he will be a force to be reckoned with for many years to come, conjuring up a soccer goal in a phone box sized space. The Eagles ran away with the game in the third quarter, scoring four goals to have them on target for a 100 point belting. Adelaide Coach Mark Bickley moved running defender Graham Johncock into the forward line for some dash and this change was rewarded when he booted a goal late in the quarter. Unfortunately for the Crows, Luke Shuey’s tireless work on the ball resulted in a goal after a clever tap down from Chris Masten. It was an embarrassing 65 point lead to the Eagles at the final change.

It was party time for the Eagles in the final quarter with an astonishing nine goals kicked. The 36,000 strong home crowd was delighted and loud cheering and Mexican waves filled Patersons Stadium. At the end of the game Mark Nicoski, Quinten Lynch and Scott Selwood had three goals apiece after the Eagles buried their opponents. It was champagne football with only token resistance being shown by the Crows. Taylor Walker kicked two consolation goals and Thompson scored one but it was a cameo for both of them as the Crows were well and truly thrashed by a Finals-bound West Coast.

With Collingwood succumbing to a 96 point belting by Geelong in a game seen by many as the Grand Final preview, West Coast’s 95 point win will serve as a warning to the reigning Premiers as they prepare to meet the Eagles in the first Qualifying Final. For Adelaide it is on to 2012 and the appointment of a new coach. All Crows’ fans will be hoping for an improvement on their 14th position finish on the Ladder this year.

Scoreboard

Clubs Make Leadership Changes

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

WESTERN BULLDOGS
In December, the Bulldogs announced the appointment of former player Simon Garlick as the new CEO, replacing the recently departed Campbell Rose. Garlick studied and worked during his 181 game career. After his retirement, he held a number of management roles with LeasePlan Australia, gaining commercial experience. He was also a member of the AFLPA Executive Board and appointed to the Bulldogs' Board of Directors in 2007. In 2009, he was appointed the club's Chief Commercial Officer, overseeing key areas of the business, membership, sponsorship, events, marketing, communications and fan development.

In announcing the appointment, club president David Smorgon acknowledged other candidates' credentials but said Garlick was the outstanding candidate with his "detailed understanding of the AFL industry, ... high level of commercial acumen, ... successful track record, ... deep appreciation of our organization and the wider AFL industry, (and) ... his determination and commitment to succeed".

SYDNEY
In mid-February, the Swans announced Adam Goodes and Jarrad McVeigh as joint captains for 2011. Goodes has been co-captain since 2009 while McVeigh has been a member of the leadership group for the past several seasons. In making the announcement, Coach John Longmire said both players "... epitomized the team-first values ... and would work well together". Longmire, who praised Goodes as a leader, believes the two will compliment each other. He was considering one, two or three captains (the Swans had three captains 2005-2009), but opted for Goodes and McVeigh whom he said were the best options at this time. He praised McVeigh for his onfield discipline, confidence to say what he thinks and his honesty.

McVeigh grew up in NSW and played junior football with Pennant Hills in Sydney's north. He also represented NSW in under-12, under-16 and under-18 state sides. He was drafted by the Swans in 2002, debuted in 2004 and has played 149 games. He won the club's best and fairest award in 2008 and played in the International Rules series in 2010. He missed out on selection for the 2005 Premiership team, but did play in the 2006 losing Grand Final team against West Coast. McVeigh, a lifelong Swans supporter, said it was an honor to captain the team he had supported all his life.

Goodes, 31, said he was excited to be reappointed as captain and is looking forward to working with McVeigh. He said the co-captaincy policy was a "... true reflection of the ... leadership we value ... and a real positive for us". He further stated that there were many leaders at the club and each led in a different way. He believes McVeigh will be a stand-out.

The Swans have had co-captains since 2005. Goodes was co-captain with the recently retired Brett Kirk for the past two seasons and Craig Bolton. Bolton gave up the captaincy in order to concentrate on regaining full fitness after a long injury layoff. He played only four games in 2010.

Longmire, who is in his first season as senior coach, said he was open-minded about the Club’s captaincy structure. “I considered having one, two or three captains but decided a joint captaincy between Adam and Jarrad was the strongest option for us at the moment,’’ Longmire said.

“I chose Jarrad as co-captain because he plays a disciplined role for the team and has done so for a number of years now. He understands the game well and is prepared to help drive the group,’’ Longmire said.

“He has taken his football to a level where he is confident and prepared to say what he thinks, and we value that honesty.’’

WEST COAST
West Coast official Steve Woodhouse has been forced to retire from his role at the club due to Parkinson's disease. He was diagnosed with the condition five years ago but continued with the club. He was general manager of football for eight years before moving into the role of list and contracts manager two years ago. He was planning to remain with the club in a more limited role in 2011 but his condition has worsened, preventing him from doing so. He said he had enjoyed his ten years with the club and was proud to be part of a successful team and club. He said he was proud of his contributions and could leave satisfied with the job he had done, with highlights being the 2006 Premiership and two Brownlow winners (Chris Judd and Ben Cousins). He praised fellow staff members and the players for their hard work, calling it exceptional.

CEO Trevor Nisbett praised Woodhouse for his "... loyalty, dedication, attention to detail and ... professional standards", saying that Woodhouse handled the difficult job of football manager very well. Woodhouse remained with the club until the Christmas break in mid-December.

PORT ADELAIDE
In November, the club announced its new leadership group for 2011. Jacob Surjan, vice-captain in 2010, has been dropped from the leadership group due to missing most of the season through injury. The club has added Jay Schulz and Jackson Trengrove to the group. Both had impressive seasons in 2010 with Schulz, in his first season with Port after being traded from Richmond, kicking 33 goals in 16 games. Trengrove, drafted in 2008, made his debut in 2010 and had a fine season, playing 19 games rotating between the ruck and defense. Trengrove has already been earmarked as a potential future captain. Schulz, according to coach Matthew Primus, filled in admirably in a forward role after Warren Tredrea was sidelined with injury. Primus also said Schulz impressed with his leadership off the field. Others in the leadership group are captain Dom Cassisi, Dean Brogan, Troy Chaplin, Alipate Carlile and Travis Boak. Primus said younger players such as Boak and Trengrove were the future of the club. The club had just Cassisi, Brogan and Surjan as "official" leaders in 2010.

Source: heraldsun.com.au

ADELAIDE
In early December, the Crows named midfielder Nathan van Berlo as the new captain. Scott Stevens, Ben Rutten, Michael Doughty and Scott Thompson complete the five-player leadership group for 2011. Van Berlo becomes the sixth captain in the club's history. He follows Chris McDermott, Tony McGuinness, Mark Bickley, Mark Ricciuto and Simon Goodwin, who retired at the end of last season. Van Berlo, who has played 119 games, said he was honored to be named captain and is looking forward to "... leading the group into a new era" and believes the team can be successful. CEO Steven Trigg said van Berlo had worked hard on improving his natural leadership skills. He believes that van Berlo will do an excellent job as captain after being part of the previous leadership group.

Demons Secure Viney And Rally for Austin

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

Jack Viney, the son of former captain Todd, has already been earmarked by the Demons for a father/son draft selection in 2012 when he will be eligible for the draft. Todd Viney recently left Adelaide, where he had been serving as an assistant coach, to take up a role as general manager of player development with the Demons. The younger Viney, 16, has been attracting interest from other clubs and the Demons are very pleased to make the commitment to Jack who like his father was recruited by club CEO Cameron Schwab.

Jack (5''8", 171 lbs) is considered one of the best young talents coming through the system. He captained the South Australian team at the Under-16 tournament, helping win their first title and being named MVP. Recruiting manager Barry Prendergast described Jack as a very talented midfielder with clean hands, courage and strong defensive pressure when pushed forward. Coach Dean Bailey said bringing Jack into the Demons now would allow the coaching staff to assist with his training program as well as help him establish himself and make friends with the current players. Jack said it was an easy decision due to his father as well as his uncle Jay (23 games, 1998, 1990-1991) playing for the Demons.

Todd played 233 matches 1987-1999, the tenth most in the Club’s history. He won the best and fairest award in 1993 and 1998, was named to the interchange in the club's team of the century, is in the club's hall of fame and was named as one of Melbourne's 150 heroes in 2008. He also represented South Australia in state of origin games and played in the International Rules series. After he retired, he coached in country Victoria, then had a stint as an assistant at Hawthorn 2004-2008 before returning to his native South Australia as an assistant with the Crows 2009-2010.

A large contingent of Melbourne players and Coach Dean Bailey recently traveled to Darwin to show their support for young forward Austin Wonaeamirri whose father was killed in an auto accident in mid-November. Among those making the trip were Brad Green, Nathan Jones, Aaron Davey, Liam Jurrah and Brent Moloney. Bailey said Austin was very popular around the club and is well liked by his team mates. He described the loss as tragic, not only for the Darwin community but for Melbourne as well, due to Wonaeamirri having been involved with the Tiwi Bombers as well as the Demons. Matthew Wonaeamirri was a former chairman of the Tiwi Land Council and vice-chairman of the Tiwi Bombers. He often traveled to Melbourne to watch his son play.

Also making the trip to show their respect were CEO Cameron Schwab, assistant coach Josh Mahoney and player development manager Ian Flack. Melbourne president Jim Stynes, who often spoke with Wonaeamirri and visited him up north, was unable to make the trip.

Pies Get Easy Ride In 2011 Schedule

by Johnson Leung reporting for AFANA in Melbourne

Collingwood's chances of winning consecutive Premierships have been boosted by the 2011 AFL schedule, revealed in Melbourne last week. The club have been given 18 games in Melbourne next year, with 14 at the MCG, and do not travel outside Victoria until Round 14. The Pies will finish with three interstate games in the last seven rounds of the regular season. This year, the Pies played seven matches at the MCG from Round 16 to Round 22 on their way to claiming top spot, then four finals (including two Grand Finals) at the venue to break their 20 year premiership drought.

AFL Chief Operating Officer Gillon McLachlan rejected the suggestion from Hawthorn President Jeff Kennett that the schedule favored the defending Premiers, saying nearly every Melbourne club asks to play at the Pies at home. "(Collingwood) travel the least of anyone in the competition ... because when we match all the games and club requests and where we try to put them, they become a bit landlocked," McLachlan said. "It's a quirk and it's just how it is."

Carlton and Richmond will open the season for the fourth year in a row, on Thursday March 24. The following night Geelong hosts St Kilda at the MCG, while the Pies get the premiership defence underway with a Saturday afternoon home game against Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium. However the Pies are not expected to unfurl their 2010 flag until their Friday night Round 3 clash against Carlton. Other highlights of the opening round include a Saturday night contest between Adelaide and Hawthorn at AAMI Stadium to commemorate the Crows' first official match in 1991. A day later, James Hird will coach Essendon for the first time in a home and away game against the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.

Gold Coast's entry into the AFL means byes will return to the schedule for the first time since 1994. Next season will consist of 187 matches across 24 rounds. There will be 19 rounds of eight matches with one bye and five rounds of seven matches with three byes. All clubs will play 11 home games and 11 away games with two byes. The new schedule means the domestic TV broadcast arrangement will change. While pay-TV broadcaster Foxtel will be guaranteed a minimum of three games each week, free-to-air networks Seven and Ten could broadcast as little as one match each week, depending on the schedule.

Gold Coast will have the bye in Round 1 and will make their debut in Round 2, against Carlton at the Gabba in Brisbane. The Suns will play three home matches at the Gabba. Their first home match at the redeveloped Gold Coast Stadium will be in Round 10 against Geelong and will mark Gary Ablett's first match against his former club.

Rounds 5 and 6 have been dubbed a "footy fiesta" with the AFL scheduling 14 games across nine of 11 days, with only two days separating the last match of Round 5 (Hawthorn v Geelong on April 26) and the first match of Round 6 (West Coast hosting Melbourne in the first Thursday night game at Patersons Stadium, formerly Subiaco Oval). Traditional rivals Essendon and Collingwood will clash at the MCG on Anzac Day, followed by a night match between Fremantle and Western Bulldogs at Patersons Stadium.

The AFL has abandoned its policy of the previous year's Grand Finalists only playing once the following season. Collingwood and St Kilda will clash twice next year, at the MCG in Round 11 and Etihad Stadium in Round 21. The League has again scheduled a "floating" final home-and-away round to give it more flexibility for the final week of games before the finals. Essendon will have the bye in this round.

Other features of the 2011 schedule include:

Two Monday night and three Thursday night games.

Geelong, Fremantle and Sydney will have games against teams coming off the bye four times, while Collingwood, Hawthorn, Gold Coast and the Western Bulldogs have none.

Essendon have the most games of any club against this year's top-eight clubs (12) with five matches against top-four finishers. By contrast, the Western Bulldogs only have three games against their fellow top-four finishers.

Adelaide are either at home or in Melbourne in the first 19 weeks of the season. They will only travel to Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland. The Crows will play three Saturday afternoon games (against Fremantle, Gold Coast and West Coast) at home, and at least eight of the Crows' 11 home games will have live telecasts against the gate.

Brisbane Lions will play three games at the MCG and three at Etihad Stadium for Victorian-based supporters. The Lions and the Suns will clash Saturday night at the Gabba in Round 7 and Round 21.

Essendon will play five 2010 finalists (Western Bulldogs, Sydney, St Kilda, Carlton and Collingwood) in a row to start the year. They go to Perth twice in five interstate trips and play Gold Coast only once.

Fremantle have been rewarded for their breakthrough 2010 season with three games at the MCG compared to none last year, that is until they reached the finals. They also get to play two Friday night games against St Kilda (Round 20) and Collingwood (Round 23)

Geelong will face a unique challenge in the 2011 schedule when they have three straight weeks of games against teams coming off the reintroduced bye: Collingwood in Round 8, Carlton in Round 9 and Gold Coast in Round 10.

Identical twins Brad and Chris Scott will coach against each other for premiership points when Geelong play North Melbourne at Skilled Stadium on Saturday afternoon in Round 7. Channel Ten had requested that the match be played at Etihad Stadium on a Saturday night to maximise TV ratings, but the Cats objected.

Gold Coast will have at least 18 matches on Saturdays, eight of which will be played at night. The Suns are the only club that won't play at least one match on either a Thursday or Friday night, with Sydney playing their first home game on a Friday night since 2003. The AFL has stated that matches involving the Lions and the Suns will never be played in the same timeslot.

Hawthorn will play nine games outside Victoria, including four home games at Launceston's Aurora Stadium. This compares to just seven interstate games this year, including one trip to Adelaide and Perth.

Melbourne have one less interstate trip than this year, with four away matches in Darwin, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. They also have 10 Sunday games next year.

North Melbourne have to visit Paterson's Oval (formerly known as Subiaco) twice in their first three games and also play Hawthorn in Launceston. In all, the Roos will travel six times. They will also confront Grand Finalists Collingwood and St Kilda twice and the bean counters will not be happy with only one Friday night game. The Kangaroos' only Friday night game will be in Round 19 against Carlton.

From Rounds 7 to 17 Port Adelaide will have a demanding schedule: home, Sydney, home, Darwin, home, Perth, home, Brisbane, home and Darwin. The Power will play three Saturday afternoon games at AAMI Stadium, against West Coast, Gold Coast and Fremantle.

Richmond play their first nine matches in Melbourne, including their first four at the MCG. The Tigers will not play in Victoria for a 35-day period from May 21 to June 25, during which time they will travel to Darwin, Sydney and Brisbane, along with the first of their two byes. Cairns in tropical north Queensland will host an AFL match for competition points for the first time when the Tigers take on Gold Coast at Cazaly's Stadium in Round 17. It will be the first of three matches to be played between the clubs over three years at the venue.

St Kilda have the most games played at night with 16 games, including one Thursday night game, one Monday night game, six on Friday nights and six on Saturday nights.

Sydney will play eight games at the SCG and three at ANZ Stadium (against Essendon, Collingwood and St Kilda).

In a new concept, West Coast will tackle the Western Bulldogs in an indigenous-themed clash at Patersons Stadium in Round 9, the same weekend as the Richmond-Essendon "Dreamtime at the 'G" clash. The Eagles will host the HMAS Sydney tribute match for the first time against the Swans at Patersons Stadium in Round 4 and will have just three six-day breaks and two night away matches.

Patersons Stadium will be empty for a weekend in Round 17 when West Coast take on St Kilda in Melbourne on the Saturday while Fremantle will be in Sydney on the Sunday.

Brave Bulldog Johnson Retires

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

A tearful Brad Johnson told the Western Bulldogs club this week that he would retire at the end of the season. He had spoken to Coach Rodney Eade midway through the year but Eade told him to sit back and think about it for a while. However Johnson, who has managed just 13 games due to an achilles injury, said the time was right to give the game away.

Johnson said telling his teammates was the hardest thing he had ever had to do but the achilles problem had hindered his training and preparation for games. He said he first began having trouble shortly after Christmas last year.

Johnson debuted for the Bulldogs in 1994 and quickly established himself as a star. He played in the two losing Preliminary Finals against Adelaide in 1997 and 1998. He began his career as a hardworking midfielder. In 2001 then coach Terry Wallace experimented by positioning Johnson in the forward line with surprisingly good results. Johnson became a permanent forward when Luke Darcy was sidelined with a knee injury in 2005.

Johnson, 34, played his 350th game in Round 11 this year. He not only holds the club games record, but is also seventh on the all-time League games list. He also represented Victoria on several occasions in the now defunct State of Origin games. His best season was 2006 when he kicked 74 goals, won the club best and fairest award and was named captain of the All-Australian team.

Former Rivals Teammates At Suns

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

Several weeks ago, Adelaide defender Nathan Bock informed club officials that he was defecting to the Gold Coast (see www.afana.com/drupal5/news/2010/08/18/crow_flies_nest-2229). As a result, he will be teammates in the backline with former opponent Port Adelaide's Nathan Krakouer who has also signed a three year deal with the new expansion team. Both will begin preseason training in November.

Club DEO Travis Auld was delighted with the signing of the duo, saying it was an exciting time as the club builds its list. Coach Guy McKenna said the inclusions would bring experience to the club. He acknowledged Bock's status as a well-respected player who came from a well-organized team. He said the club needed a tall defender such as Bock who "... has the ability to play on big power forwards and ... an attacking mindset with good skills and decision making ... he can set up play from the backline. He has a bold style of play which suits ... our club."

McKenna believes that Krakouer's speed, agility and tackling would complement Bock. He also believes that Krakouer, who has played just 17 games since his 2007 debut, could develop into an exciting player who could play defense, wing or forward. According to McKenna, Krakouer has already expressed a desire to help with the leadership of his indigenous teammates. Bock has also expressed interest in a leadership role with his new club.

The Krakouer name is well-credentialed in football, but also has some tragedy surrounding it. Nathan is the nephew of Jimmy and Phil Krakouer who both starred with North Melbourne1982-89. Their younger brother, Andrew, also played for North but lasted just two seasons. Jim Krakouer's son and Nathan's cousin, Andrew Krakouer, played 102 games for Richmond 2001-2007. He was delisted at the end of 2007 after being arrested and charged with aggravated assault over the the 2006 Christmas holidays. He continued his footy career in the WAFL until 2008, at which time he was found guilty and sentenced to a jail term. He served 16 months but kept his up his footy with the prison team. He was released on parole in 2009 and is currently playing with Swan Districts in the WAFL with the hope of being picked up by another AFL team. His father, Jimmy, was convicted on drug trafficking charges and served nine years in a WA jail.

The AFL notified both Adelaide and Port Adelaide that they would be entitled to compensation draft selections for the the loss of Nathan Bock and Nathan Krakouer to the Gold Coast. The AFL has devised a compensation plan for all clubs who lost players coming out of contract at the end of 2010. The plan can be viewed at www.afl.com.au/tabid/208/default.aspx.

Under the plan, the AFL determined that Adelaide would be allowed to select another player at the end of the first round of the next five drafts. Port will be allowed an extra selection after the completion of round two of the same drafts. Under the compensation rules, the player selected will be placed on the team list after the club names its full team for that season. In the case of two or more clubs using their compensation picks in a given year, the selections will be based on where those clubs finished in the standings with the the lowest finishing club allowed the first selection at the end of the proscribed draft round with the second lowest finishing club having the next selection, and so on. All clubs who become entitled to a compensation selection will be allowed to trade their compensation selection. The club accepting such a trade will also be allowed the 2010-2014 time frame to activate that selection.

Also under the new rules, the Gold Coast will not be allowed to take another Adelaide or Port Adelaide player who is coming out of contract at the end of 2010.They are, however, allowed access to any delisted player. They are also allowed the same full trading rights as the current 16 AFL clubs.

Adelaide General Manager Phil Harper sad the club believes Bock is worth more than what the AFL is granting under the compensation rules. He and the club plan to appeal for a higher compensation selection. He pointed out the fact that Bock is still relatively young at 27, had won the club's best and fairest award in 2008 and is a two-time All-Australian player.

Hannebery Riewoldt Winners

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

Sydney's Dan Hannebery is the 2010 Rising Star. Just ahead of the first finals series, Hannebery was presented with the Ron Evans Medal by 2009 winner Daniel Rich from Brisbane. The award also comes with a $20,000 investment portfolio and a personal banker, both from the National Australian Bank, the award sponsor. NAB also sponsors the preseason games.

Hannebery won the nomination for a stellar performance in Round 2 against Adelaide in which he racked up 23 possessions. Ironically, he felt his performance could have been better, saying he felt he was a bit selfish and that his defensive efforts could have been better.

The voting panel of Andrew Demetriou, Adrian Anderson, Mark Ricciuto, Kevin Bartlett, James Hird, Gerard Healy, Glen Jakovich, Robert Walls and Kevin Sheehan awarded Hannebery the maximum 45 votes. Melbourne's Tom Scully was second with 35 votes, followed by Brisbane's Tom Rockliff with 24 votes and Melbourne's Jack Trengrove with 11. Eagle Nic Naitanui, who was expected to win the award early this season before falling away, polled just two votes. Those came from former Eagle Glen Jakovich and AFL Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan.

Hannebery was drafted in 2008 and played seven games in his 2009 debut season. He remained in Melbourne to finish school in 2009 and traveled to Sydney when required. He emerged as a future star this season, playing 19 games and averaging 21 possessions per game. His ability to win the ball at clearances in contested situations were a highlight of his play as was his long kicking. He is ranked in the top ten at the Swans for disposals (398 through Round 22) and tackles (60 through Round 22).

Coach Paul Roos, who said at the start of the season that Hannebery had the makings for a breakout season this year, was proven right. He said Hannebery's performances had been consistently high and that he did not suffer mental lapses or struggle as some young players do. He praised Hannebery's ability to impact games on a regular basis. NAB CEO Cameron Clyne was also impressed with the young midfielder saying his "... spirit, courage and talent make him a worthy ... Rising Star.” .He is the second Swan to win the award, following Adam Goodes' win in 1999.

Source: AFL Record, Patrick Keane, AFL Media Release

Richmond's Jack Riewoldt is the first Tiger to win both the club award and the Coleman Medal in the same season. The spring-heeled Riewoldt was also nominated for Mark of The Year in Round 11. The club's awards function was held several days after the completion of Round 22. Jack polled 210 votes to edge out captain Chris Newman (204 votes) for the Jack Dyer Medal. Two time winner Brett Delidio finished third with 193 votes. 2010 debutant Dustin Martin was fourth with 159 votes while Shane Tuck continued his streak of top ten placings as he came in fifth, followed by Shane Edwards and Trent Cotchin, who did well despite missing two games through suspension.

Riewoldt was a slow starter in the round by round count, but his six goal haul against Essendon gave him the lead. The next few rounds earned him plenty of votes, capped off with a perfect 25 for his impressive, eye-catching ten goal display against West Coast in Round 12. His Round 21 effort sealed the win.

He had an amazing 2010 season with three goals or more in 14 games, four or more in eight matches and 43 goals from Round 8-15. That effort represented the highest total for an individual in eight consecutive matches since Essendon's Matthew Lloyd in 2001. Riewoldt was also top at the club for marks (with 123), contested marks (54) and 79 inside 50s (getting the ball to a teammate inside the 50 meter (55 yards) arc for scoring chances. He also laid 68 tackles for the season.

Newman's second placing was the best of his career. He averaged 19 disposals per game, was second for running the ball out of defense (79), finished fifth for disposals (410), fourth for marks (101), and equaled Riewoldt's tackle count.

Deledio also had an excellent season as a running defender. in 20 games, he had 20 or more disposals and had the most kicks (302). He was second for handballs (254), first for total disposals (556), second for marks (116), first for inside 50's (76) and first for rebound 50's (running the ball out of defense) with 93.

Dustin Martin,19, became a star almost overnight. In his debut season, he played 21 games (missing one through suspension) and averaged 20 disposals per game. He was ranked first for clearances (winning the ball at stoppages) with 97, third for disposals (425), inside50's (74), second in contested possessions (179) and fourth for tackles (70).

Tuck's first game was Round Three, but he was quick to impress and did so in his 20 games. He averaged 25 disposals per game. He also ranked highly in statistics - third for kicks (227), first for handballs (283), second for total disposals (510), second for clearances (92), third for inside 50's (66) and first for tackles (103).

THE VOTING: All five members of the match committee award 0-5 votes for each player per game. The most any one player can receive after a game is 25.

He kicked six goals in that match and is the first Tiger to win the medal since its inception in 2004. The medal is named to honor Stewart as he played for both St Kilda and Richmond. Stewart was a premiership player with both clubs and won the Brownlow Medal while playing for both clubs. He played 127 games with the Saints 1963-1970, was a member of St Kilda's 1966 premiership team and won the Brownlow Medal in 1965 and 1966. He crossed to Richmond in 1971 where he played a further 78 games 1971-75 and won both the Brownlow and Richmond's best and fairest award in 1971. He played in Richmond's premiership team in 1973.

Melbourne's Brad Green was honored for his best season ever with the club's Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy as the 2010 best and fairest. Truscott was a star for the club before being killed in World War II. Green polled 295 votes, ahead of defender James Frawley (277), and ruckman Mark Jamar (231). Frawley is the nephew of former Richmond coach Danny Frawley. Fourth place went to last year's winner Aaron Davey (194) and Colin Sylvia (170).

Green also won the Ron Barassi Leadership award as well as the Heart and Soul Award for his outstanding work on the field where he was rotated between a wing and the forward line. He kicked 55 goals for the season to finish sixth on the AFL goalkicking list, the best return of his career. He nailed three goals for more in ten games and kicked five in three games, all of which were personal bests. He also ranked sixth in the league for marks with 153.

Frawley, who debuted in 2007, had a breakout 2010 season, lifting his play to finish third on the AFL list for rebound 50's (running the ball out of defense). His ability to shut down forwards and clear the ball out of defense were features of his game.

Jamar also had his best season with 643 hitouts, second only to Docker giant Aaron Sandilands. Jamar's previous best was 261 hitouts in 2008.

This year, Coach Dean Bailey and assistants Josh Mahoney, Sean Wellman, Scott West and Mark Williams used a different method. They each awarded votes to players.

Strike Three Benefits Tuck

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

Hawk midfielder Travis Tuck faced the Tribunal on the Tuesday following Round 22 as the first player charged with a third strike under the AFL's illicit drug policy. It was not through testing that his third offense was discovered, but rather from an incident during the Round 22 weekend. On the Friday night, he was found unconscious in his car outside a nightclub. He was rushed to a hospital where he was treated for overdosing on the party drug GHB*.

Police, who are not charging Tuck for possession, found drug paraphernalia and a vial of "liquid" in his car. While he was being treated in the hospital, it was learned that he has been being treated for clinical depression for the past 10 months. He had been making excellent progress until this relapse. It is believed the relapse came as the result of the club informing him several days previously that his future was in doubt and that he was not selected in the Box Hill team (Hawthorn's VFL affiliate) for their Final's game. At his hearing, Tuck admitted to the use of drugs and the two previous strikes against him. He also said that he had been under personal pressures at the time.

The hearing, which was closed to the media, heard testimony from medical experts, several of whom have been treating Tuck. It was said that he had been being treated for depression and had been making excellent progress. He had also been treated and counseled for his previous two drug strikes under the AFL guidelines. Under those guidelines, only the AFL medical officers are notified. After a second strike, the club doctor is notified. After a third offense, club officials are notified and the offender goes before the Tribunal which determines sanctions.

The Tribunal took into consideration all the medical testimony which was presented. One medical advisor told the Tribunal that it would beneficial for Tuck to remain on Hawthorn's playing list so he could be in a structured environment which would provide support for him during his treatment and give him motivation to improve. The panel then rendered their decision. They waived the $5000 fine but Tuck was suspended for 4 weeks from AFL football and a further 8 weeks from VFL football. They said that due to the compelling circumstances, the usual penalties under the AFL code would be too harsh. However, they also issued stipulations with which Tuck would have to comply. They are:

- Tuck must submit to testing three times a week for a period to be determined by the AFL medical officers.

- he must fully cooperate in providing a urine sample upon request for testing.

- continued cooperation with AFL medical staff, attendance at a prescribed drug rehabilitation program, and any psychiatric advice and treatment as may be directed by his doctors.

Should Tuck test positive again or breach any of the instructions listed above, he could again be referred to the Tribunal for further penalties.

Tribunal chairman John Hassett concluded that the AFL policy's main goal was to look after the welfare of the players and said it was that focus which led the Tribunal to its final decision. AFL Operations Manager Adrian Anderson thanked the Tribunal and AFLPA, Hawthorn, the AFL medical staff and Tuck's doctors for their assistance in ensuring that Tuck could continue his football career.

Hawthorn will keep Tuck on their list but not the senior list. He will still be allowed to train and play with Box Hill. If the club opts to delist him, he will still be a member of their training squad through Box Hill and he will be allowed to play in the 2011 preseason games. The club will have then have the option of selecting him in the 2011 rookie draft. If not selected, the club would still have the option of placing Tuck on the newly established inactive list and then have the further option of relisting him at the end of next year.

As a result of the hearing, a storm of controversy erupted with club officials and fans divided on whether or not clubs should be informed after a first strike. Hawk President Jeff Kennett, who is also President of the depression support group beyondblue, and Hawk CEO Stuart Fox both fired a broadside at the AFL's policy of keeping player names confidential until the third strike. Fox said after the hearing that if the club had known prior to the incident, they could have helped Tuck through their own support network and the whole incident could have been avoided. Kennett has been opposed to the policy for some time and both he and Fox have written to the AFL requesting an overhaul of the League's policy.

Officials from Adelaide, Essendon and the Bulldogs are on Kennett's side in believing that club officials should be notified if a player returns a positive test for a first time. Collingwood Coach Mick Malthouse also supports that idea. Many believe that while it does not need to made known to everyone at the affected club, it would be better to have club medical staff and at least one person in administration be informed of a first offense so they can deal with it.

On the flip side, Melbourne's Cameron Schwab, Richmond's Brendon Gale, North Melbourne's Eugene Arocca, medical experts, AFL Operations Manager Adrian Anderson, and AFLPA CEO Matt Finnis support the policy of confidentiality. Gale, who preceded Finnis with the AFLPA and was one of the architects of the policy, said that confidentiality was paramount and that medical experts were better equipped to deal with the issue than club officials. Schwab said that if a player were exposed early on, in an atmosphere in which there is often movement of people from one club to another, it could prove to be a distraction. Arocca expressed sympathy for Hawthorn but said it should be left to the medical experts. He also said that if another club person should be informed, it should be a welfare officer. Gale said he could empathize with the frustrations felt by the clubs now that he is Richmond's CEO, but reiterated that the current method of confidentiality, counseling and treatment is the best way.

AFL CEO Matt Finnis supports the current policy, saying that Tuck could have faced even more pressure had he been forced to reveal his condition, drug issues and treatment to club officials. He said that sharing medical information with club officials would be inappropriate. The AFL's Adrian Anderson concurred, stating that getting Tuck into counseling after his first offense avoided an even more serious situation. He further stated that Tuck's struggles could have been exacerbated had his condition been publicized. Hawthorn Coach Alistair Clarkson said the revelation of Tuck's condition explained why he was out of form and struggling in games. The current policy expires in February.

After the hearing, Tuck issued a statement of apology saying he accepted the Tribunal's decision and took full responsibility for his actions. In his statement, he said "I have been dealing with personal and medical issues for the past 12 months and following ... intensive treatment I really felt that I had come a long way. It (the overdose) was a big setback ... and I understand the anxiety it has caused my family, friends and ... Hawthorn ... and for that I am truly sorry. I know I have to keep working hard to deal with my issues and ... this will not be easy ... I have had excellent medical assistance and will continue this treatment ... I'd like to thank the Hawthorn Football Club for their support ... and the ... support of the AFLPA and the AFL ... This ... and the ongoing structure in my life, along with the motivation to train and return to play will be a big part of my progress and my recovery."

The Tuck family has a long and distinguished history in football. Travis' father, Michael, is the League's games record holder with 426 games for Hawthorn to his name. He is married to Faye Ablett, sister to Gary Ablett Snr, making him uncle to Gary Ablett Jnr at Geelong, former Sydney premiership player Luke Ablett, and former Cat Nathan (now with Gold Coast). Travis' brother Shane currently plays for Richmond.

Tuck was drafted in 2005, debuted in 2007 and has played 20 games. He was named as an emergency for the Hawks' 2008 Grand Final team.

*gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (a naturally occurring substance found in the central nervous system, wine, beef, small citrus fruits, and almost all animals in small amounts). It can be used medicinally to treat insomnia, clinical depression, narcolepsy, alcoholism, fibromyalgia, and to improve athletic performance. It can also be used as an anesthesia. Illegally, it is used as an intoxicant and a date r-ape drug due to properties which can wipe out memory of events and cause a person to become compliant and suggestible. Some users take it for its numbing effects and hallucinogenic properties. It can be lethal combined with alcohol. For more information, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma-Hydroxybutyric_acid.

More Woes For Crows

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

Adelaide champion Andrew McLeod announced his immediate retirement due to his inability to overcome a knee injury. McLeod, 34, would like to have played a farewell game in the final round but admitted that his knee would not withstand the stress. McLeod had knee surgery earlier in the season and has not recovered as well as expected. He said he was stepping aside to give a younger player an opportunity even though it is the last round and the Crows have no chance for of a Finals appearance.

McLeod's last game was in Round 16, which was his first game back after missing a month due to knee surgery. After that game, the knee problems flared up again. McLeod will do a lap of honor with fellow retirees Brett Burton, Simon Goodwin, Trent Hentschel and Tyson Edwards prior to the Round 22 game.

DEBUT: 1995
GAMES: 340 (club games record holder)
GOALS: 275
HONORS: 1997-98 Premierships; club Best and Fairest 1997, 2001, 2007; All-Australian 1998, 2000, 2001, 2006, 2007 (captain); 1997-98 Norm Smith Medal (Grand Final best on ground), Indigenous Team of the Century, 2001 Brownlow Medal runner-up; International Rules series 2001, 2002, 2005 (co-Captain), 2001 AFL Players Association MVP, 2003 preseason Premiership, 2003 Michael Tuck Medal (preseason Grand Final best on ground)

Forward Trent Hentschel, currently sidelined with a back problem, has also retired. Hentschel, who has played just 71 games in nine injury-ravaged seasons, said his battered body could not withstand the rigors of AFL football. He debuted in 2003 and had his best season in 2006, booting 42 goals from 19 games. In Round 21, he suffered a horrific knee injury which required four operations. At the time his doctor compared the damage to that of a car accident victim.

Hentschel spent two years recovering and playing in the SANFL, with hamstring problems preventing his return to the AFL side until 2009. He played his first game late in 2009, but the knee problems flared up again the following week and required more surgery. He returned late in the season and performed so well in five games that the club gave him a one year contract extension. He played a further three games at the start of this season, but since then has been sidelined with hamstring, knee and back problems. He is still hoping for a chance to play for SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens in their Finals series.

Coach Neil Craig praised Hentschel for his perseverance, determination and character over the years to comeback from his injuries. Hentschel thanked the club and the medical staff for giving him his chance to play AFL football and for their support and help in his attempted recoveries.

Source: alf.com.au; David Burtenshaw, Club Media Release

Fremantle midfielder Paul Hasleby has announced his retirement. As of August 24, he is a slim chance to play his final game in Round 22. He was a late withdrawal the previous week due to knee swelling. Hasleby, 29, debuted in 2000 and has played 207 games with the Dockers. He was an instant star in his debut with a 30-possession game against Geelong in front of a home crowd at Subiaco.

Hasleby's 2008 season ended in a preseason game when a knee injury was found to require a knee reconstruction. He returned the following season, played all 22 games and was the club's leading ball winner. In announcing his retirement, he said there was so much talent at the club, all of whom had "... the eye of the tiger, ready to take on the challenge of an AFL career." He said it was that abundance of talent and youth which led him to his decision to retire.

Coach Mark Harvey remarked on how Hasleby came to the club as an 18 year old student and progressed to be a leader and tutor to the younger players who followed over the years. He also acknowledged Hasleby's will to overcome his knee injury.

Brisbane has told Troy Selwood that he will be delisted at the end of the season. Selwood, who will miss the final round after suffering cracked ribs in Round 21, is the twin brother of Eagle Adam Selwood and younger brother of Geelong's Joel Selwood. A fourth brother Scott is on West Coast's list. Coach Michael Voss hoped Selwood would find another club to extend his six year career. Voss described Selwood as an outstanding person who was loved by his teammates. Selwood, 26, has played 26 games and kicked 11 goals for Brisbane since his debut in 2005. He was a Rising Star nominee in his debut season.

Melbourne has delisted forward Brad Miller and defender Daniel Bell. Bell debuted in 2004 and played 66 games. Miller, who refused a farewell game in Round 22 in favor of playing in the VFL Finals, has played 133 games since his debut in 2002. Bell already plans to nominate for the upcoming draft. Both thanked the club for the opportunity given to them and said they understood the direction the club was opting for with their focus on youth. Coach Dean Bailey issued the usual thanks to the duo for their service to the club and wished them the best for the future.

Crow Flies Nest

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

All-Australian defender Nathan Bock will not play out the season with the Crows after announcing he had accepted an offer to join the Gold Coast Suns next season. After Bock informed club officials of his decision, Coach Neil Craig said Bock would not be selected for the remaining games. Bock said he had no problem with the club opting to give a younger player an opportunity.

General Manager Phil Harper expressed disappointment at losing a player of Bock’s quality but praised Bock for his honesty in informing the club now so they could plan for the future. It is believed Bock was offered almost $2 million dollars for several years by the Gold Coast. However, his manager is still in discussions with the club. Bock said his decision was made partly so he could set himself up for his post-footy future.

NATHAN BOCK
Debut: 2004
GAMES: 113
GOALS: 56
HONORS: 2008 All-Australian, 2008 Club Best & Fairest, 2007 Showdown Medal (best on ground against Port Adelaide)

There has also been speculation that Port Adelaide's Nathan Krakouer and Western Bulldog Jarrod Harbrow may shift from their respective clubs to join the new AFL franchise. Speculation continues to swirl regarding Gary Ablett. It has been no secret for much of the season that the Gold Coast is keen to lure Ablett north, where he would be reunited with brother Nathan (who quit the Cats at the end of 2007). Ablett has put off contract negotiations until the end of the season, further fuelling the rumor mill about a possible change of clubs.
