The Australian Broadcasting Corporation is the big loser in the new capital city radio rights deal with the AFL, which sees the public broadcaster's coverage not only restricted further, but also facing increasing competition on Sundays over the next two years.

AFL Extends Free Streaming to North America

The AFL quietly announced with a post on the AFL website (and a short note to AFANA) that for Round 17 the AFL website will have free streaming of TV coverage to the USA and Canada this weekend.   The AFL also added a banner on the AFL home page about this.  The note to AFANA said:

"Please note that afl.com.au will stream all eight matches live into the UK, Ireland, USA and Canada over the course of Round 17."  read more »

AFL Online Video Becomes 'Aussie Sport TV'

After years of frustration, things are about to get a lot better Watch AFL Video on Aussie Sport TV and Support AFANA! for viewers of AFL video online beginning July 3rd.   A new service called Aussie Sport TV is coming online and will offer AFL video in flash format (similar to YouTube and other sites).   This will replace the existing video offerings of Telstra's Bigpond service, including for afl.com.au subscribers.   Even better, some of that video will be available here on AFANA.com.   We will have more details on AFANA's part of this very shortly.   Please note:  the service will not be live until July 3rd.   If you are not already a subscriber to afl.com.au you can subscribe to this new service at this link:  Aussie Sport TV.  (Please use this link only as subscriptions through this link generate commissions for AFANA!).  If you already are a subscriber to afl.com.au, you are subscribed to this new service automatically at no additional charge!   Today AFL web site subscribers may have received the following notice:  read more »

New Volunteer Needed for AFL Reviews and Previews

3AW Sacks Four After Ratings Drop

Melbourne radio station 3AW has axed four members of its sports team after suffering a plunge in the latest ratings survey of AFL radio coverage.  3AW Executive Producer of Sport Ralph Horowitz and journalist Craig Hutchison (who presented the pre-match program on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and called the Saturday night game) were given their marching orders last week, as were Trevor Marmalade and John Rothfield (aka Dr Turf), co-presenters of Saturday morning sports/variety show Glossing Over, which was also dropped. Hutchison and Marmalade are colleagues at Channel Nine Melbourne.  read more »

Featured AFL Matches on Radio This Week

All AFL Matches listed are available on afl.com.au and are free, no subscription required.  To get to the selection go to the AFL web site approximately 10 to 30 minutes prior to the match start and look for the links to listen live to the radio feeds.  This season you can listen to the prematch commentary if you wish (see this link). You may choose the station you want there.  Listening requires Windows Media 9 or later.   We will update this each week throughout the season.  This information is provided as a service by AFANA.  We have no control over the internet feeds whatsoever.  If you have difficulty we encourage you to use the technical support links provided at the AFL site first before contacting us.  You can also search our site for suggestions on how to make the audio work.   read more »
