Tom Harley, Captain of an indomitable Geelong team over the past 3 seasons, has come under fire this year for being too slow for the modern game. However this inspirational leader marshalled his troops against a 'do or die' Bulldog team, searching for a preliminary finals berth in season '09.
Symbolically, Bulldog Jason Akermanis hangs on by a shoe lace as the rampant Geelong Cats surged away during a furious first quarter, when it rained goals. The Bulldogs lost but have a second chance to make the Preliminary Finals, when they meet the Brisbane Lions at the MCG.
Brownlow Medalist and Geelong champion, Jimmy Bartel, pins the arms of Bulldog Matthew Boyd, leaving him with no handball options and winning the free kick.
Bulldog, Jason Akermanis (21), is crushed by Geelong's Joel Corey (11) as neither player pulled out of a crunching encounter and went to ground, arms and legs flailing, fighting like Cats and Dogs.
Geelong's Travis Varcoe, breaks through some heavy midfield traffic during a strong first quarter, in which Geelong set up an unassailable lead. The Bulldogs never recovered although they came close a few times.
Shaun Higgins, breaks the line leaving his captain, Brad Johnson on the dirt, while being pursued by a Geelong defender.
