Eagles Intensity Prevails Over Dogs

Scott Lockhart reporting for AFANA from Subiaco Oval, Perth.

The West Coast Eagles have again shown they are the dominant force in the competition after beating the Western Bulldogs by 15 points at Subiaco Oval. In a battle of the two of the strongest running teams in the league, it was the Eagles who were able to outlast their opponents in a highly intense contest. The Eagles were able to restrict the Bulldogs to their lowest score of the year through intense pressure and strong games from captain Chris Judd and rising star Matt Pridis who kicked three crucial goals.

PREVIEW ROUND 6

by John Loffler

(Last week 4 from 8. 21 / 40 =52.5%)

Nobody said this was easy. I’m trying to remember a season that started so poorly for tipping based on some early season form exhibited by teams in previous years but alas, old age won’t allow the regression. Diabolical game results may require devilish tipping. There have been a number of assumptions made at the start of the season that probably need revisiting.

Round Five Tribunal Results

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

TRIBUNAL
Charges Laid:

Dale Thomas (COL), striking Essendon's Paddy Ryder: assessed as negligent impact (one point), low impact (one point), and high contact (two points), equaling four points, a Level One Offense, 80 demerits, and a reprimand. He has no existing good or bad record and acceptance would have reduced the penalty 25% to 60 demerits, still a reprimand with the demerits held over toward his future record.

AFL Round 5 Part 2

by Tim Murphy

At Football Park:

Port Adelaide  4.2   5.6   11.12   14.12.96
St. Kilda      1.2   3.3    3.4      6.7.43

Port splashed their way to a big victory in a rain-saturated game at Foopall Park. Sinkilda are pretty awful interstate, something pointed out beforehand by sacked coach Grant Thomas. Collected more injuries too, Lenny Hayes suffering a broken collarbone. But Port are the side performing better than predicted so far, and several folks had them making the eight. Having most of your best players fit and in form is a big factor, as Sinkilda can only rue. In selection here Port named Dean Brogan but he wasn’t fit, in came Troy Chaplin at the expense of Tom Logan. Port full-back and former Saint Darryl Wakelin played his 250th game. The Sainters made a number of changes, losing another key defender in Sam Fisher (hamstring) while James Gwilt and ruckman Michael Rix were dropped. Fraser Gehrig returned from suspension, Brett Voss was called up for his first game this season along with junior Sam Gilbert.

At the MCG:

Essendon     3.4   6.6    8.10   11.13.79
Collingwood  1.5   5.12   9.16   12.23.95

Collywobbles made hard work of winning The Traditional Anzac Day Clash ™. The Pies controlled the ball pretty much all afternoon but like a number of teams these days, couldn’t kick goals. Is it flooding? The thirty-second rule? Richo knows. He misses often enough. Essadun clung on through force of will really, the scores stayed close enough for them to remain a theoretical chance most of the way but any other result would’ve been robbery. In the lead-up there’d been whinging from both sides about the 4-day break from Saturday but by the day itself such thoughts were exchanged for the honour and privilege and the great occasion of playing on Anzac Day. An honour denied anyone playing for one of the other 14 clubs, something inadvertently pointed out to Channel Ten’s new special comments man Michael Voss. “Isn’t this a great occasion Michael? . . . The first time you’ve been here I suppose?” In selection the Bombers were forced to leave out ruckman David Hille (groin strain) and dropped junior Leroy Jetta, in came talls Kepler Bradley and Mark Bolton. The Poise welcomed back Alan Didak for his first game this year following knee surgery and debuted former Carlton ruckman Chris Bryan. They replaced injured Paul Licuria (hamstring) and axed ruckman Guy Richards.

Ben Cousins returned home this weekend, but refused to answer any questions put to him by reporters at the airports except that he was feeling good. And the Eagles have altered his contract, imposing a severe criteria for his return to football and continuing his career. The criteria are:
