Tony Tips Swans

Former St. Kilda and Syndey champion, and the league's goals record holder, Tony Lockett believes Sydney can win back-to-back premierships because it is a champion team with a Paul Roos-inspired work ethic that will overpower the class and talent of West Coast. However, he said it would again be a hard-fought contest.

Lockett praised Coach Paul Roos, saying his impact on the club was impressive and described the team as a disciplined "well oiled machine", and believes the Swans will start as favorites.

Potential Brownlow Scandal

In 1993, Greg Williams missed winning a third Brownlow Medal by one vote, losing to Essendon's Gavin Wanganeen. Incredibly, he did not poll a single vote in the Round 10 game that year, despite chalking up 44 possessions. All the votes went to his teammates - Mil Hanna (19 possessions, one goal, three votes), Justin Madden (10 possessions, two votes), and Steve Silvagni (11 possessions, one vote). Williams' failure poll any votes for that performance is often highlighted as one of the biggest discrepancies in Brownlow Medal history.

At the time, there were only two field umpires (a third umpire was introduced in 1994). The two officiating that game were senior umpire John Russo and the less experienced Murray Bird.

Grand Final Coverage in the USA and Canada

The Grand Final will be live on television in both the USA and Canada.   The match is Friday night 29 September US time and continues into Saturday morning.   

For US fans:  on Setanta Sports only.  Setanta Sports is available nationally on DirecTV ch. 615 and Globecast ch. 752 and on ITVN.  It is not on cable anywhere.  The Grand Final coverage begins at 11:20 PM EDT* Friday night and concludes at 4:00 AM EDT Saturday.  The Grand Final is not available on Fox Sports or ESPN in the US.   We have a list of Grand Final parties you can check.   * Late time change!

For Canadian fans:  on Fox Sports World Canada.   FSWC is available nationally on most cable and all satellite services.  Channel numbers vary widely, check with your provider.  The Grand Final coverage begins at 12:00 MN EDT and concludes at 4:00 AM EDT Saturday morning.

AFL Weekly Review Week 3 Finals 2006

“It’s the first time in over twenty years the same sides gave contested consecutive Grand Finals,” announced the Siddey ABC news. As I recall the Lyin’s and Magpoise contested the Big One in 2002/3. They’ve still a bit to learn about The Game up here but not much more about the Wiggles. Thank Richo it’s a replay of last year, no-one could stand the tedious Crobots being in it and Freo panicked on the big stage, they’ll be better for the experience. This Weegle side might do it, strengthened as they’ll be by the addition of Kerr, Embley and Seaby from the qualifying final.

Swan Adam Goodes is favourite for tonight’s Brownlow Medal, with Wiggle pair Ben Cousins and Chris Judd in the market, Bulldogs Scott West and Brad Johnson are also in with a chance.

Irene Cara To Headline Grand Final Entertainment

The AFL has announced the entertainment and time line for this year's Grand Final.  The show is headlined by Irene Cara and Australian Idol contestants.  The entertainers include acts from the recent Australian TV "Countdown Spectacular": John Paul Young, Sean Kelly, Daryl Braithwaite, Shane Howard, Brian Mannix and Joe Camilleri.  

Cara is a two-time Grammy and Academy Award winning singer-songwriter and her trip to Australia is sponsored by Foster's Group (formerly CUB), which features What a Feeling in the latest campaign for Carlton Draught beer.  Cara, who had never been to an AFL match, said she was excited about performing in front of 100,000 people at the MCG.   Entertainment will also include the "Young Divas".  They comprise four former Australian Idol finalists: 2005 winner Kate DeAraugo and runner-up Emily Williams, plus 2004 finalist Ricki-Lee Coulter and 2003 finalist Paulini Curuenavuli.

The 12 Australian Idol finalists for 2006 will perform Waltzing Matilda this year.

True "Bloods" Brothers

Swan midfielder Brett Kirk stood on the Grand Final dais last year and proclaimed, "This is for the Bloods!" It was a nickname the Swan players adopted four years ago, harking back to the days of South Melbourne, when the team was known as The Bloods. They were also sometimes known as the Blood-Stained Angels.   The resurrection of the old names came about when Coach Paul Roos brought in leadership consultant Ray McLean because of concerns about the future leadership of the club, especially with the retirements of stalwarts Paul Kelly and Andrew Dunkley.

Grand Final Umpires Named and Grand Final News

Michael Vozzo will officiate his first Grand Final on Saturday, alongside veterans Brett Allen and Darren Goldspink. Allen will line up for his fifth consecutive Grand Final, while Goldspink will be involved in his sixth premiership decider since 1993.    Allen is now within sight of the record of seven consecutive VFL / AFL grand held by Bob Scott, who controlled Grand Finals from 1929 to 1935. The all-time GF record for field umpires is 10, held by Jack Elder.   South Australian boundary umpire Darren Wilson has been appointed to his ninth consecutive Grand Final, and will be joined by Jonathon Creasey and Adam Coote. Victorians David Flegg and Mark Canning have been named goal umpires.

Goodes The Toast Of The AFL

Swans utility Adam Goodes claimed his second Brownlow Medal on Monday night, foiling local favorite Scott West of the Bulldogs who even in finishing second proved his remarkable consistency - it was the fifth time the Bulldog star had finished in the top four.

But it was Goodes, the affable Sydney star who staked his claim as one of the most durable winners in the history of the medal. His previous win - jointly taking out the award alongside legends Nathan Buckley of Collingwood and the Crow's Mark Ricciuto in 2003 - had been while playing as a ruckman.  Now a free wheeling midfielder, Goodes has often played matches on a higher plane than opponents and team mates alike this season, dominating proceedings as a big kid dominates underage games.
