2017 Rookie Draft

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

Just days after the national draft, the AFL held the rookie draft. It would also have the time for the preseaon draft, but all 18 clubs notified the league that they were not going to participate in the preseaon draft so there was none. Just as the draft, again it is club club with the selection number followed by the player's name, (club of origin), height, weight, position and a brief about the player. Some players have no selection number ahead of their names. Those players were prenominated by the clubs as Category B and/or Next Generation Academy nominations. The NGA is another program for junior players to progress and train, with the clubs aiming to draft those players. Clubs selecting Category B (international or unregistered) or NGA rookies do not have to use a selection on those players.

On October 6, the two-week free agency/trade period began, as well as several clubs delisting players to make places available for newcomers. The biggest news ahead of this period was Gary Ablett requesting a trade back to Geelong despite a year left on his contract with the Suns. Others to request trades have been: Port's Jarman Impey designating Hawthorn his preferred choice, Giants Nathan Wilson and Devon Smith, Adelaide's Jake Lever and Charlie Cameron. The Bulldogs were also seeking to trade Jake Stringer, whose inconsistent form has seen fall out of favor. Melbourne was also seeking to trade Jack Watts, who was bitterly disappointed at not being able to remain with the club.

The Greater Western Sydney Giants continue to send shivers up the collective spine of every other team in the AFL. Despite losing two talented defenders early in their Sunday contest against the Western Bulldogs, the Giants rolled to their sixth win in a row, outlasting a plucky Bulldog outfit by 25 points at Spotless Stadium. GWS now sits in third on the AFL ladder in a 3 way log-jam at 7-2 for the year.

AFL Draft

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

The National Draft was held on November 24. For this draft, the AFL developed a system and software to place points value on each draft pick. This allowed other clubs to use their allocated "selection points" to bid on designated academy and father-son players. The club for which that player was designated would then have to review their draft points and match the competing club's bid. The bidding and points system shuffled some draft selections. Recruiters used the software to help determine how many "points" they had to play with.

Player Trades

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

Mid-October was a busy time for all clubs with the free agency and trade periods commencing. Everything was concluded on the afternoon of October 22.

Under a new rule, the AFL has allowed clubs to trade future draft picks. Each club is allowed to trade just one first round selection and no more than two of these over a four year period. The AFL also created a valuation points system to determine compensation selections for clubs who lose players due to free agency.
