AFL Trades: October Summary

Eddie Betts Soars

It was a slow starting but fast finishing trade period between October 7 and October 14. The first week was relatively slow with only a dozen or so trades, but the last day was a frenzy with everyone trying to get deals done before the 7:30 PM AEST cut off time. St Kilda was the most active, reaping a bonanza of talent at the expense of draft picks. In the summary, "on-traded" draft selections means a club traded a selection they previously received from another club. All clubs are required to submit "list lodgements" - a current roster of their players by the end of October. This is the first of several they are required to submit to the AFL before the start of the next season. The next listing will be due after the national draft and the final list will be due after the pre-season and rookie drafts.

Mid-Season Draft

Over 60 players nominated for the mid-season draft, but only 18 were selected. It most likely would have been less except for several sudden retirements and mounting injuries since the season began. When the AFL announced their plan for this draft, only a handful of clubs actually were eligible to participate, but as the weeks progressed, all but four clubs were eligible. Below are the selections. While there are a few former AFL players, most were selected from lower leagues for their first crack at AFL level.

1. Carlton - Josh Deluca, midfielder, Subiaco, originally drafted by Fremantle in 2014, managed just four games before being delisted at the end of 2017.

Mid-season Draft, SSP Signings

Delisted Carlton defender has 2nd chance

It is something the AFL has tried, without much success, in the past and is set to try again - a mid-season draft. The league notified the clubs that the draft would take place at the beginning of June after Round 11 and just ahead of the bye rounds. The decision to hold a mid-season draft was finalized by the AFL Commission in October following discussions by the Competition Committee, but the finer details were not determined at that time. To be eligible, players must have previously nominated for an AFL draft or been on an AFL club list.

2018 AFL Draft and Rookie Draft

The AFL draft was held over our Thanksgiving weekend. During the trade period, many clubs swapped draft picks to improve their positioning in the draft selection order. They were again allowed to do so at the draft ahead of making their player selections.

On to the selections, both for the main draft and rookie draft. It is club by club in alphabetical order. The number in front is the draft pick, followed by the player name, (club of origin), age, height, weight and position, followed by a brief profile. There was no preseason draft as all clubs advised the AFL they would not participate.

The AFL has introduced a new signing period for players overlooked in the draft and rookie draft.
