Anderson against Port Adelaide

The Supplemental Signing Period (SSP) started several months ago and ended February 15. It allows clubs with available spots to sign players as rookies. Below are the clubs and the players they signed.

ADELAIDE

The Adelaide Crows had two spots open on their list with Fischer McAsey and Paul Seedsman both being placed on the inactive list for the 2023 season. They signed former Collingwood midfielder Tyler Brown as a rookie for this season. Brown has signed a one year deal. Brown is the son of former Magpie premiership player Gavin and played 27 games for Collingwood before being delisted at the end of 2022. He had battled illness and injury in stint with the Pies.

List Manger Justin Reid said club was pleased to secure Brown, “Tyler brings experience from five years in the AFL system and knows what it takes to play at the highest level so we are thrilled to add him to our group. He is primarily a midfielder but can also play a variety of roles across the ground which we are excited about. He comes from a very good football family, is hard-working and driven to make the most of his opportunity ...". Brown said he was excited about joining the club, "I’m very grateful for getting another opportunity ... I’m really excited to be part of a young group that has a lot of promise for the future. I felt welcome here as soon as I walked in the door ...".

Adelaide filled their last spot by signing former Collingwood defender Mark Keane on a one year deal. Keane, 22, was contracted by the Pies for the 2022 season but opted to remain in Ireland for the past year where he excelled in hurling and Gaelic football.

Keane was drafted by Collingwood in 2019 and played five games in three seasons before deciding to return to Ireland. The defender, however, decided to resume his AFL career.

BRISBANE

Former Bomber Conor McKenna has returned to Australia to resume his AFL career. McKenna, 26, played 79 genes Essendon 2015-2020 before returning to Ireland where he played in a championship game in Gaelic football. The talented defender/forward had talks with Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Essendon before deciding on Brisbane, who had tried to lure him away from the Bombers.

Irishman Darragh Joyce, 25, has been signed by Brisbane. Joyce played just 13 games in six seasons and was delisted at the end of 2022. The defender joined the Saints as a Category B rookie in 2016. Joyce was invited to train with the Lions after the club placed Marcus Adams on the inactive list. Adams is still recovering from post-concussion issues. He suffered the concussion late in the 2022 season.

CARLTON

With midfielder/forward Sam Philip being placed on the inactive list due to ongoing groin issues, the club filled the spot by signing ruckman Hudson O'Keeffe. He is 6'5" and 198 pounds. He was the number one ruckman with the Oakleigh Chargers and represented Vic Metro at the national games where he was named one of the best on ground against Vic Country. He is very athletic and excellent at ground level for his size. He also has speed and an excellent leap and tackles well.

The Blues also signed dynamic and speedy defender Alex Cincotta from their VFL team where he won the 2022 best and fairest award. Carlton Head of List Management Nick Austin said Cincotta’s call up was a fitting reward for his dedication, “After a superb season in the reserves last year, we are delighted to elevate Alex onto the AFL list. Alex will work closely with our defensive group, building on his craft and developing his skills even further. “He’s a mature-age player (28), who already understands our system and has played with a lot of our group ...".

They signed former Tiger and Sun defender Oleg Markov. Markov, 26, played five seasons with Richmond but managed just 23 games and requested a trade. He played two seasons and 22 games for the Suns before being delisted at the end of 2022. He has been training with the Pies Since January.

The Suns have also signed forward Brodie McLaughlin. McLaughlin, 25, has been training with the Suns for several months. McLaughlin has endured a run of injuries over the past few seasons, breaking his leg in 2019 before suffering a back injury in 2021. However, he made an impressive comeback last season to kick 24 goals from 12 VFL matches for Frankston.

MELBOURNE

The Demons signed Frankston defender Kye Turner to fill the last spot on their list. Turner, 21, was selected over former Port player Trent Burgoyne.

NORTH MELBOURNE

Former Hawk Liam Shiels, who announced his retirement last August, has come out of retirement and joined North Melbourne. Shiels, 31, played 255 games for the Hawks but managed just 13 games in 2022 as the club focused on youth. He is reunited with his Hawthorn coach Alistair Clarkson and played in the 2013-2015 premierships.

RICHMOND

Richmond has signed forward Kaelan Bradtke. Bradtke, 21, is 6'2" and very athletic. He has been training with Richmond since December. The elevation completes a meteoric rise for Bradtke, who booted 39 goals from 17 games in the strong Ovens and Murray Football League last year. Playing in the Ovens and Murray League, his strong form caught the eye of Sydney and he joined the Swans' VFL side in 2022 and was invited to the state combine ahead of the national draft but was overlooked. Tiger recruiters jumped at the chance to put him alongside veteran forwards Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt. He can play a variety of positions and is strong in the air and at ground level. Former Cat Quinton Narkle was also training with the club, but the Tigers opted to fill their last spot with Bradtke.

ST KILDA

Stocker was drafted by Carlton in 2018 and played 28 games before being delisted at the end of 2022. He was overlooked during the free agency period and rookie draft but has impressed during his training time. Stocker grew up as a St Kilda supporter.
