In late May, the AFL held their midseason draft. Two previously AFL listed players get a second chance while the rest are new. As always, it is the draft selection followed by player name, team of origin, age, height and position. For some unknown reason, the AFL no longer publishes player weight


7 Toby Murray (Adelaide, SANFL), 20, years old 200 cm (6'5"), ruck/forward
The younger brother of Adelaide defender Nick, he joined the Crows' SANFL program this season, of his career after stints at the Murray Bushrangers, Essendon's VFL side and Wangaratta Rovers in the Ovens and Murray competition.  Has a good eye for goal and is strong overhead

6 Will McLachlan (Geelong Falcons), 19 years old, 185 cm (6'), medium forward
Strong competitor, marks (catches the ball) well and good in front of goals. Kicked 26 goals in six Coates games this season. Already been compared to Geelong's Ollie Henry and was a member of the AFL's Young Guns squad

17 Luke Beecken (Woodville-West Torrens,  SANFL), 23 years old, 184 cm (6'), defender
Strong ball winner who can provide plenty of drive from halfback and advance the the ball well by hand and foot. Has excellent endurance which allows him to push further up the ground

21 Darcy Craven (East Perth, WAFL), 19 years old. 174 cm (5'8"), small forward
A versatile type who can push up the ground. Wins the ball well and has an eye for goal booting 10 in seven games earlier in the season. Caught the attention of recruiters with a four goal performance against West Coast earlier in the year

9 Cooper Lord (North Melbourne VFL/Sandringham Dragons), 19 years old, 184 cm (6'), midfielder

A good ball winner and tackles strongly, uses the ball well. Was a member of Sandringham's 2023 premiership team and played for the Young Guns earlier this season. Also has very good endurance, something the Blues have been keen on in recent drafts


10 Iliro Smit (Eastern Ranges), 19 years old, 200 cm (6'5"), ruck
Athletic and developing ruckman who has been with Hawthorn's Next Generation Academy. Was overlooked in last year's draft due to a shoulder reconstruction. Has excellent speed and follow-up efforts for his size, is also strong overhead and  kicks the ball long

19 Ned Long (Collingwood VFL), 19 years old, 195 cm (6'3"), midfielder
Drafted as a rookie by the Hawks in 2022, he played five games before being delisted at the end of 2023. Trained with the Magpies and has been impressive with his physical presence, ball winning ability and tackling in the VFL. Has a competitive streak, is strong overhead and has good endurance


13 Saad El-HawliI (Northern Bullants, VFL), 24 years old, 184 cm (6'), defender
Speedy and uses the ball well running out of defense and can play on a wing. Is an excellent ball winner and caught the eye of recruiters with an excellent performance against Sydney AFL players at reserves level, is also a very good mark (catching the ball)\


5 Jasper Scafe (West Perth, WAFL), 20 years old, 196 cm (6'4"), tall forward
Was a member of Fremantle's Next Generation Academy but was overlooked in the 2022 draft. An accurate kick for goal - four goals in just his second season game for West Perth and followed up with three the next week


11 Luke Kentfield (Subiaco, WAFL), 19 years old, 194 cm (6'3"), tall forward
Several clubs showed some interest in him last year but he was overlooked in the draft. Came into the 2024 season bigger, faster and stronger and kicked nine goals in 10 games this year. Showed his mobility at the draft combine last year, posting 8.42 seconds for the agility test


1 Geordie Payne (Tasmanian Devils/North Launceston), 18 years old, 184 cm (6'), midfielder/forward
Defender who has moved to the midfield and forward line, strong at the contest and in the air

15 Brynn Teakle TEAKLE (East Fremantle, WAFL) 24 years old, 203 cm (6'6"), ruckman
Teakle was selected by Port Adelaide in the 2022 midseason draft and delisted at the end of 2023. Trained with Collingwood hoping to be picked up during the SSP but was overlooked


12 Logan Evans (Norwood, SANFL), 19 years old, 189 cm (6'1"), defender
Was touted as a top selection at last year's draft but was overlooked. Has been training with the Power as part of the SANFL rookie program and playing for Port's SANFL team after crossing from Norwood. Strong competitor who can take a good mark (catch of the ball) and wins the ball well


2 Jacob Blight JACOB BLIGHT (Peel Thunder, WAFL), 22 years old, 186 cm (6'1"), defender
Strong in the air, a consistent player and good interceptor of the ball

16 Campbell Gray (Essendon VFL), 20 years old, 195 cm (6'3"), 21, key forward
Arrived at the club over the summer as a strong marking (catching the ball) defender but has been a revelation as a forward, kicking nine goals in four games

4 Max Hall (Box Hill, VFL), 22 years old, 183 cm (6'), midfielder/forward
Has been on St Kilda's radar for some time. Has speed, endurance, footy smarts and makes good decisions under pressure


14 Tom Hanly (Gippsland Power), 18 years old, 179 cm (5'8"), midfielder/forward
Injuries savaged his 2023 season and he was overlooked in the draft. Returned to the Coates competition this year and showed his ball winning abilities. A hard worker who also played with the Young Guns. Has been compared to new teammate Tom Papley


3 Jack Hutchinson (Collingwood VFL), 22 years old, 190 cm (6'1"). small forward
formerly from the Gippsland league in country Victoria, former Collingwood player Jarryd Blair suggested he have a crack at VFL level. Dangerous in front of goal, is athletic and has speed


8 Kelsey Rypstra (North Adelaide, SANFL), 20 years old, 173 cm (5'8"), small forward
An excellent crumber with footy smarts and can set up teammates close to goal. Has good aerial skills for his size and can push up the ground to present as a target
