Voss Replaces Matthews as Brisbane Coach

Matthews gives up coaching Brisbane, Voss quickly appointed

In a shock announcement last Monday, Leigh Matthews announced his retirement as Brisbane coach. Matthews took over as coach of the Lions in 1999 and coached the team in 237 games, including their three premierships 2001-2003. Matthews, in making the announcement said it was the right time for him step aside. Matthews will remain with the club to assist with the post-season review and list management.

Round 22 Tribunal Results

Penalties assessed, punishments assigned

Jamie Charman (Brisbane), striking Sydney's Brett Kirk: assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point), equaling five points, a Level Two offense, 125 demerits and a one game suspension. He has a record of one game suspended within the past three years, increasing the penalty 10% to 137.50 demerits.

Charman took his case to the Tribunal with former Brisbane player and current operations manager Marcus Ashcroft speaking on his behalf. After AFL advocate Jeff Gleeson argued that Charman's blow had the potential to cause serious injury as it was to the kidney region, Ashcroft argued that the hit was not of sufficient force to constitute a strike
