A Round of Surprises
Both teams had plenty to play for in this match as both try to lift themselves from the nether regions of the bottom eight. The spirits, minds and bodies were certainly willing in the opening stages of the game, but the skills fell a bit short with several glaring errors before the first goal.

As an eighteen year old Dubliner, Jim Stynes arrived in Australia to play AFL footy for the first time. He was a Gaelic footballer with the Ballyboden Club, and answered a 1984 Irish newspaper advertisement, looking for 'talented Gaelic footballers’

Charges Laid:
Michael Firrito (NM): wresting Geelong's Paul Chapman: fined $1200 to for a first offense. He accepted, reducing the fine 25% to $900.
Hawks remain perched atop the Ladder
If there is any one truism in football, it is that you underestimate the Kangaroos at your own peril. Certainly the Cats didn't underestimate them, but Geelong was made to work overtime for the win as the Kangaroos simply refused to give in.
Queen's Birthday Clash for Melbourne and Collingwood
During the week, the build up to the Queen's Birthday clash between the Melbourne Football Club and Collingwood, dominated the media, the rumor mill was rife that Paul Gardner was stepping down as Melbourne's chairman, to be replaced by Irish import and club legend Jim Stynes.
Bombers go down in clash with Hawks, but not without a fight
The game was positioned by Hawthorn supporters- as a 'percentage booster match'. The high flying, top of the table, Hawks - still steaming from last weeks toweling by the Dogs - also dominated the media during week but for all the wrong reasons.
