Carlton Champion Retires

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

They called him Adonis after the Greek god because of his physique. Sometimes he was just likened to a Greek god in general. Gods are impervious to harm and injury, but Anthony Koutoufides, despite his on-field feats which sometimes seemed to defy mere humans, is still mortal. His mortality finally caught up with him in the form of a degenerative hip. Although he was keen to see out the season, scans last week revealed the injury to be worse than originally thought. Thus, Kouta has been forced to bring down the curtain on a stellar 278 game career which began in 1992. Those 278 games for Carlton has him listed sixth on the list of games played in the navy blue.   He joined the Blues as a young teenager, playing in Carlton's junior side at the age of 15. He worked his way up through the ranks to play in the Under-19s, played in Carlton's 1991 preseason side, and made his senior debut in 1992.

Cats in Another Purrfect Performance

Scott Lockhart reporting for AFANA from Subiaco Oval, Perth.

Geelong has reaffirmed its position on top of the AFL Ladder following a crushing 68 point win over Fremantle at Subiaco Oval, leaving the Dockers with little chance of making the Finals.

The Ladder leaders looked every bit the side most expect to win the Premiership in yet another dominating performance against a side still hopeful of making an appearance in the Finals.  The Cats winning streak now extends to 12 and puts them in the box seat to take out the minor Premiership, sitting two games clear of second place.

If you’re a bit like me and coming about nowhere in the tipping, or you’re up in the top 10 in the tipping competition but still 8 points behind, you would have welcomed all the stuff going on about the AFL coaches at the moment. This is a total distraction from supporting your team or concentrating on your tipping

Essendon Era Ends

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

The football world and the Essendon players were in shock Wednesday morning when the news broke that Essendon Coach Kevin Sheedy would not retain his job after 2007. Sheedy, an avid fan of horse racing, was on his way to a race function, was summoned to a meeting with club Chairman Ray Horsburgh and Director Peter Jackson at a Melbourne hotel. The pair wasted little time in advising Sheedy that his contract would not be renewed. Sheedy, who previously stated he would like to continue as Essendon Coach, was not overly surprised at the decision. He and the board have been discussing his position since January. It brings to an end a 27 year reign, one of the longest in football history.
