Pagan Pink Slipped by Blues

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

The decision was made aboard the private jet of wealthy club President Dick Pratt. He and other club officials, including Director Stephen Kernahan, were flying home from Brisbane, where Carlton had just been humiliated by the Lions. The final vote to sack Pagan was up to the club Board, but they were acting on the recommendation of other club officials. The performance of the team over the past five weeks, losing those games by a combined total of over 300 points, was discussed aboard the jet and Pagan met with club officials on Monday to receive the bad news.

AFL Weekly Review Round 16 2007

by Tim Murphy

At Docklands:

Geelong    8.2   13.6   15.11   20.18.138
Footscray  3.1    4.4    6.8      9.9.63

The p*ssy juggernaut rolled on, crushing the Doggies for their eleventh straight win. Peaked too early, have Geelong. The Doggies are a bit fragile and like many mid-table battlers, found themselves worried out of it by the Cats’ fierce pressure. The Dogs’ disposal was very poor again, but unlike last week they didn’t get away with it. Footyscray picked up some more injuries too, to Gilbee, Hahn and West which they don’t need. The Geelong side here was weakened by the late withdrawal of in-form full-back Matthew Scarlett (‘flu) while Travis Varcoe was dropped, in came Shannon Byrnes and David Johnson, who’s let his hair grow back so he doesn’t look like Chapman any more. The Bulldogs had defender Dale Morris pull out with back spasms and dropped Dylan Addison, Scott West returned and Cameron Wight was called up.

In a crucial game for both teams, the archrivals played out another thriller. Although not as close as their last three encounters - all decided by one point - the large crowd was nevertheless treated to an exciting night of football.

PREVIEW ROUND 16

(Last week 5 from 8 total 72 from 120 =60.0%)

Another week and another coach gone!! It looks like we’re into that “fall on your sword” cycle that seems to crop up every so often when we need a bit of a clean out of AFL coaches and some fresh faces in the commentary boxes of Foxtel, 7 and 10!! I don’t know about you guys but to be a journalist in the golden days you needed a bit of nouse, a bit of intelligence and some ability to sense what was a stupid question or a stupid headline as opposed to a question or headline of meaning or smart grammar, perhaps a bit of alliteration.

Connolly Quits Dockers

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

For weeks, there has been speculation that Chris Connolly would be gone as senior coach by the end of the season or before. That speculation has become a reality with the club announcing that Connolly will no longer coach the club. According to a media statement released by Fremantle, numerous discussions have taken place in recent weeks between Connolly and the board. Connolly told the board on Monday that he would not seek a new contract, after which the board considered a number of options for the remainder of the season. Those options were to have Connolly see out the season, step down immediately, or coach at least two more games and have a send-off at Subiaco Oval.
