AFL Review Round 10 2007

AFL Round 10

by Tim Murphy

At the MCG:

Collingwood  3.5   7.7   12.12   15.13.103
Fremantle    5.3   8.6   10.11   13.16.94

It’s not often you can accuse the Pies of being smart, but they played smarter footy than the Dockulaters to grind out the win here. Freo’s excellent rovers work very hard to win the ball, then witness their team-mates being too cute, too indecisive or too ordinary with the ball.

Essendon has presented themselves as a genuine finals contender after claiming their biggest scalp of the season, downing the Sydney Swans by a solitary point at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Eagles Bounce Over Roos

Scott Lockhart reporting for AFANA from Subiaco Oval, Perth

An eight goal final term has seen the West Coast Eagles defeat the Kangaroos by 66 points at Subiaco Oval on Saturday. The Kangaroos, undefeated over the past six weeks, challenged the reigning Premiers for much of the game but were completely outclassed in a dominant fourth quarter display by the Eagles. Mathew Priddis was the driving force behind the Eagles win, collecting 39 possessions and kicking a goal on his way to a best on ground performance. The Kangaroos struggled to find targets up forward for much of the match and had no answer to the persistent run of the Eagles.

Former Cat Accused of Fraud

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

Former Geelong player Damian Bourke is under investigation for fraud in a property scandal which netted him several million dollars. Elders of a Maori tribe have accused Bourke bilking them out of $6 million and the wife of a Brisbane psychiatrist claims they were conned out of about $1.4 million.

Supreme Court affidavits describe Bourke as an opportunistic, evasive con man who hired a convicted fraud to help him obtain large amounts of cash from unsuspecting victims. The tribe's claims center on money they lent companies headed by Bourke to buy land at Geelong's Harding Park to develop apartments, and a site in Queensland for a medial center. Annie Fredericks, the wife of the psychiatrist, was also involved in the Queensland deal.

State Of Origin Contest May Return

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

The AFL is considering a revival of the State Of Origin games next season to celebrate 150 years of football. There is growing support among coaches and others involved in the game for the concept. The games, played midseason in the 80's and 90's, gradually declined in popularity and the last was played in 1999.

Back Rule Debate Goes On

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

The new interpretation of hands-in-the-back rule needs to be scrapped according to some players, among them Bulldog Jason Akermanis, Carlton's Brendon Fevola, and Tiger Matthew Richardson. Richardson slammed the rule as "pathetic" after having a goal denied late in last week's game due to being penalized for putting his hands on the back of his opponent to stand his ground to catch the ball. Many players feel that while a deliberate push should still be penalized, the new stricter interpretation is no good. Akermanis, writing in his weekly newspaper column, pointed out that Collingwood's Nathan Buckley, who sat on the rules committee, urged the committee not to introduce the rule interpretation. Buckley later resigned his position on the committee after the rule was passed.

AFL SEASON 2007

PREVIEW ROUND 10

by John Loffler

(Last week 5 from 8 total 42 from 72 =57.8%)

Yep, Chris Judd got off the eye gouging charge. Was there ever a doubt? I was so annoyed at the Eagles allowing the Hawks to beat them so easily that I was prepared to face the tribunal and punch someone on the nose. I would have got off as well claiming extreme provocation. We tipsters who are a few points down are forced to take a few chances and I bet many of you were thinking this guy is crazy picking Melbourne last week but, hey, it almost paid off and Melbourne suffered another 1 point loss while my tipping fell another point behind. Carlton gave Adelaide a fright and my word, weren’t the Power competitive against Geelong?
