Demetriou Defends Drug Code

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

As suspended Eagle Ben Cousins prepared to depart for a rehab facility in the USA, the league met last week to decide what to do - if anything - about Eagle Daniel Kerr being overheard on police tapes speaking with a drug dealer. Kerr could yet face sanctions under the player code of conduct.

A police spokesperson said that, at the time of the recordings four years ago, Kerr was not subjected to investigation as the police were targeting dealers, not users. And the Eagles have decided not to take any action against Kerr as he - along with several other Eagles - admitted to drug use but have promised to clean up their acts after watching Cousins crash and burn.

Dockers Dominate Port Adelaide In First Half

Dockers versus Port Adelaide at Subiaco Oval

Janet Linn and Scott Lockhart, reporting for AFANA, Western Australia

When the first ball was bounced at Subiaco Oval on Saturday, a collective sigh of relief was heard amongst Western Australian football fans. During the previous two weeks, supporters had been bombarded by a constant stream of media stories about West Coast Eagle star Ben Cousin’s drug use and his subsequent indefinite suspension from the club. With the Eagles out of town to play the Sydney Swans (a replay of the never-to-be-forgotten 2006 AFL Grand Final) and Ben Cousins on a plane to Los Angeles to enter a drug rehabilitation program, at last the city could redirect its energies towards helping the Fremantle Dockers celebrate the opening of what could be their best season to date in AFL football.

Four points, four points, two points, one point and one point. AFL Weekly Preview Round One 2007

AFL SEASON 2007

Welcome tipsters to what will be a great AFL season no doubt, with or without Ben Cousins. That quiet hiatus between seasons came to an abrupt end with the revelation about just how high the Eagles are flying sometimes and was followed by a heap of finger-pointing by just about everyone with a digit at the ineptitude of the AFL hierarchy in trying to put a stop to the amount of drugs infiltrating our wonderful game. Back in my playing days the game of footy was drug enough and you could get high on a good whiff of liniment in the change rooms and if you had a bit of daring you could follow up with a puff of a smuggled in weed of marijuana after the game and when you were so full of alcohol it wasn’t going to make any difference anyway. Times have changed. I couldn’t play very well with a belly full of booze and it’s hard to work out how players at the level of fitness they achieve these days can play with their systems full of amphetamines or coke or marijuana or whatever it is they take under the heading of “recreational” drugs.

Sydney Update Round 1

Frank Ienco, AFANA Sydney Correspondent

This Week:
Sydney Swans v West Coast Eagles @ Telstra Stadium Saturday 7:10pm Local Time

After a tumultuous month in their club’s history, the Eagles, as well as the AFL, will be finally looking to turning the focus onto the field this weekend. There will be no better way to do this than against the Swans in another Grand Final rematch in what is quickly becoming the AFL’s biggest rivalry. The evenness of the two sides has been well publicized, and after the Eagles one-point win at the MCG last September, only 12 points have separated the sides in their last five encounters.

Just days after his suspension, Ben Cousins entered rehab. He was accompanied to a local clinic by his father Bryan, who said in a media statement that his son had a substance abuse problem. It is believed that Ben may travel to the USA for a stint at an Arizona drug and alcohol rehab center.

Bryan Cousins, who also acts as Ben's manager, thanked all those who extended their support to Ben and the family and said that his son would make a statement when he was ready and requested that Ben's privacy be respected.
