Magpie Defender Retires

Veteran Collingwood defender Ben Johnson, who last played in Round Three this year, has succumbed to a run of injuries and announced his retirement just ahead of Round 17. Johnson, 32, said he had nothing left and it was the right time. Johnson has supported the club all his life and said, “It’s been a great ride. We enjoyed some great times, played some great footy and I’ve met some amazing people, including some of my best mates."

A bumper crowd of over 85,000 flooded into the MCG for the Friday night Qualifying Final between Premiership favorite Hawthorn and last season’s runner up, Collingwood. The Hawks were dealt a blow with the late withdrawal of prime mover Jordan Lewis who suffered a hamstring “twinge” at training on the eve of the big game. Four Veterans Call Time

Western Bulldogs defenders Lindsay Gilbee and Ryan Hargrave have both announced they will retire at the end of the season. Both joined the Dogs in 1999 and have played 206 and 203 games respectively through Round 21. Football Manager James Fantasia had nothing but praise for the duo, acknowledging their fine contributions to the club and said both were highly regarded and admired by their teammates. Gilbee (ankle) and Hargrave (foot) have both struggled with injury this year, managing just a handful of games each.

Geelong Proves Greatness In Epic Grand Final

Those who condemned Geelong to the “too old, too slow” basket will be adding “too good” to the slogan after the Cats produced a powerhouse final quarter to win the 2011 AFL Premiership. Geelong held a narrow seven point lead at the final change and the game looked to be set for a close and exciting finish. The much talked about second Premiership Cup for retiring Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse was not to be, as the Cats ran over the top of the 2010 Premiers in front of 99,537 screaming fans.

Cats Name New Coach

Chris Scott, twin brother of North Melbourne's Brad Scott, has been appointed as the new coach of Geelong. Scott edged out assistant coach Brenton Sanderson, who was favored by departed coach Mark Thompson, and Ken Hinkley.

AFL Trade Report

Adelaide traded its compensation selection for the loss of Nathan Bock to the Gold Coast and a third round selection (#50) for Richmond's Richard Tambling. Tambling debuted for Richmond in 2005 and played 108 games and kicked 61 goals.
