Hawthorn playing one of their occasional home game at Marvel Stadium hosted the Brisbane Lions. The past few seasons the Hawks have maintained a 4-0 winning record against the Lions and come into this game having lost last week giving up a strong three-quarter time lead. The Lions were injury ravaged and looking vulnerable against the Hawks. The Hawks had plenty of the ball early under the Marvel roof, but their kicking options and disposal let them down. The taller Lions players giving them some trouble. On the first turnover, Lachie Neale, Charlie Cameron, and Eric Hipwood made the Hawks look unaccountable and slow, with Hipwood kicking an easy goal after getting out the back. The Hawks were lucky Brisbane missed two easy goals, and they were able to get things close to parity when Day hit Gunston on a fast lead in the pocket.  The veteran Hawk kicking his first goal against the side he played with in 2023.

Giants Stand Tall to Eliminate Lions

Hodge Plays to the End

The Greater Western Sydney Giants have advanced to a preliminary final against Collingwood after holding on for a three-point victory over a gallant Brisbane Lions on Saturday night. In one of the games of the season, there was something for everyone. There were 10 lead changes throughout the match, plenty of aggression from both teams and some overzealous umpiring that saw a total of 54 free kicks paid for the match.

The Giants burst out of the blocks kicking the first four goals of the game while displaying the same physical style of football that helped them to a big win over the Western Bulldogs just a week earlier.

Martin takes mark away from Greenwood

And then there were eleven. After a cracking round nineteen that saw the Tigers hold off an injury hit but brilliant Collingwood, the Swans sink further into trouble with a loss to the Bombers and Carlton actually notch a win, there looks to be only eleven teams left in the race for the top eight. The Adelaide Crows all but dropped out of contention after being overrun by a revitalized Melbourne in the city of churches, while the Giants marched into top four contention with yet another win, this time over a plucky but inaccurate Saint Kilda.

Zak Jones and Will Langford contest.

Round eight gave the football public some classic matches, making a mockery of those in the media who have been complaining that the overall standard of the AFL is trending downward.
