Just as Round 23 was getting underway - literally - veteran commentator Drew Morphett passed away at the age of 69. Reportedly he was at home watching the Friday night game between the Bulldogs and Hawks. He was found by his wife Karen. .No cause of death was reported but it is believes he suffered a heart attack. International fans - including Americans - who watched the little coverage available in the 1980's and 1990's would remember his commentary on Australia's Channel Seven.

Week One Finals Milestones

Chris Newman and Brett Deledio (RICH) will play their first finals match in the first week of Finals. Newman has played 232 games without a Finals appearance while Deledio has had to wait 194 games. This puts them fifth and eighth respectively as the longest wait for a Finals appearance.

Brisbane Axes Coach Voss

Just days after the conclusion of Round 20, coach Michael Voss was informed by the Brisbane board that his contract would not be renewed. He declined the option to see out the season and assistant coach Mark Harvey was appointed caretaker coach. In making the announcement, chairman Angus Johnson said the club had conducted "a robust, thorough and comprehensive process ... before making the final decision". He also said that Voss had been aware of the process for some months and, having known Voss for 15 years, the decision had been difficult but that the board believed a fresh approach was needed.

Bulldog Coach Eade Record

Round 21 represents the 550th game for Bulldog Coach Rodney Eade as a player or coach. Eade played 229 games with Hawthorn and 30 games for the Brisbane Bears. He coached Sydney in 152 games before joining the Bulldogs. Eade becomes just the 13th person in the history of the League to reach this mark.
