Tigers Down Blues In Season Opener

Brook “Boris” Kilpatrick reporting for AFANA from Australia

Over 83,000 football starved fans flooded into the MCG on Thursday night for the opening game on the 2015 AFL season. Richmond went into the game as favorites after a strong finish to their 2014 campaign while Carlton was looking to make a stand despite its recent struggles.

Things started badly for the Tigers with star play maker Brett Deledio reported for a high hit within seconds of the opening bounce. They went from bad to worse when new Carlton recruit Liam Jones (ex-Western Bulldogs) had the first goal on the board for the Blues just seconds later. In a frantic opening few minutes, Carlton’s Dale Thomas left the game with a dislocated shoulder while his team mates were getting the better of their Richmond opponents. A Ben Griffiths goal kept the Tigers within touch but Carlton was doing the bulk of the attacking and stifling the much lauded Tigers midfield. Some errant kicking for goal was all that kept the Blues from building a healthy lead as they were clearly the more polished team early.

With the national draft just a few weeks away, several clubs have made further changes to their lists. At the end of October, each club was required to submit "first list lodgement" documentation with the AFL.

CARLTON
The Blues have delisted Mitch Robinson, Brock McLean and Kane Lucas. This makes a total of 12 players the club has cut since the end of the 2014 season. Robinson played 100 games with Carlton since being drafted in 2008. Robinson has joined Brisbane as a delisted free agent. Lucas was drafted in 2010 and played 42 games. Although he won the club's Best First Year Player award, he was unable to cement a spot in the team. McLean played 94 games with Melbourne 2004-09 before joining Carlton where he played a further 63 games.

Eagles Steal Win Over Cats

Rick Browner reporting for AFANA from Patersons Stadium, Perth

Much was at stake when the West Coast Eagles took on the visiting Geelong Cats. The winner would still be in contention for a double chance in the Finals, while the loser risked drifting towards elimination from the Top Eight. The Cats were hot from their win last week against definite Premiership favorite in Hawthorn. It was all up for grabs as the ball was bounced.

West Coast got off to a great start with Dean Cox making the most of the ball landing in his hands to slot the opening goal. Fast movement through the middle of the ground had the Eagles’ second on the board when Quinten Lynch scored. The Eagles looked pumped but were soon brought back to earth when Tom Hawkins scored the Cats’ first goal from a free kick.

Dockers Upset Reigning Premiers

Geelong won the 2011 Premiership and despite the loss of some key players to retirement, this is still a formidable side which plays well away. Nevertheless the Cats have had trouble with the Fremantle Dockers. Last year there was one nail-biting finish and the first quarter for 2012 showed that the fans were in for more of the same.
