The AFL would have been hoping for a close, exciting match to display the best of the game to their new Chinese audience.  Unfortunately their worst fears were realized when the Gold Coast Suns appeared to not be up for the fight.  Port Adelaide dominated the match from start to finish, running out 72 point winners in the historic clash in Shanghai.

Eagles Stave Off Depleted Bulldogs

On a perfect cool night for football, the West Coast Eagles and the Western Bulldogs showed how a dour and intense game can thrill a crowd. Numbers around the ball, slick hand passing and high pressure tackling was the order of the night. Despite the Bulldogs missing nine of their best players, they matched or bettered the Eagles in all aspects of the game with the exception of marks (catches) within the attacking fifty meter arc and crucially, on the scoreboard.

The Passing of a Magpie and Media Icon - Lou Richards
Lisa Albergo's picture

by Lisa Albergo reporting from AFANA from Chicago

There can be many descriptions of Lou Richards - a cheeky rover, a larrikin, a wit never lost for words, a media star and clown, a gentleman who always was happy to have a chat. Richards, 94, passed away quietly in his sleep in the nursing home where he resided on May 8. Some say he was one of first superstars of Australian Football, which was the VFL during his playing career. For most fans, it is the media work for which he is best known

The Fremantle Dockers withstood a determined challenge from the Essendon Bombers, to dominate in the final quarter and score a morale boosting victory in energy sapping conditions. The mercury had risen to 87 degrees (Fahrenheit) by the first bouncedown, but the real heat was applied by the Essendon Bombers who were single-minded in their attack on the ball.

Eagles Dispatch Dockers Early In Western Derby

The West Coast Eagles entered the 45th Western Derby  with a clear intent to wipe away all memories of their previous round’s meek capitulation to Hawthorn at the MCG. Back in their home territory, the Eagles were in no mood to offer their cross town rivals the opportunity of an upset win.

With just 41 seconds remaining on the clock, the Fremantle Dockers snatched a win from the luckless North Melbourne Kangaroos. The Roos have now surrendered leads three times in the first five games, having lost narrowly to Geelong by one point, the Western Bulldogs by three points and now Fremantle by five points. Conversely, The Dockers have come from behind in three consecutive games to win thrillers.

Round 4 AFANA AFL Power Poll

AFANA AFL Power Poll (Round 4)
by Boris Kilpatrick, special to AFANA from Australia

1.    Adelaide Crows (Last Week - 1)
The Crows keep top spot after obliterating Essendon by 65 points in front of a rabid Adelaide Oval home crowd. No Josh Jenkins, no Mitch McGovern, no problems for the Crows who are on fire right now.

2.    Greater Western Sydney Giants (2)
The Giants didn’t have it all their own way against a feisty Port Adelaide at Spotless Stadium. Despite trailing by four points at three quarter time, the Giants stormed home to win by 31 points, keeping the Power goalless in the final quarter.

Saints Get Easter Sunday Chocolates
Troy Thompson's picture

by Troy Thompson, reporting for AFANA from Melbourne, Australia

In a closely fought match, the Saints gradually took over and eventually wont by 14 points, keeping their season alive in Round 4 of the AFL. For Collingwood, it looks increasingly grim.

The first quarter of the Easter Sunday clash was tight, played around the boundaries and peppered with inaccuracy despite being under the closed roof. It started off with more promise though as Travis Varcoe's clever little checkside kick on the run found Fasolo on a better angle. Fasolo ran around to improve the angle a little more and kicked Collingwood's first. Misses from set shots by Moore, Greenwood and Pendlebury meant the Magpies missed an opportunity to take the game away from the Saints early.
