Greetings AFANA Tipsters,

This is the weekly update on the AFANA Members Tipping Competition for Round 15. Indeed, its a long one this week, as we have Round 14 tipping results as well.

Our members tips seem to be showing less diversity than before, but a few upsets in each round continue to surprise. For the first time I can recall since taking over this job, not a single member tipped the Kangaroos win over Bulldogs in round 14, while only one member, Pat, picked Richmond's win over Port. Pat picks up a bonus point for that. In Round 15, Fremantle and Brisbane provided the surprises, however 3 and 4 members tipped each of them, respectively.

If You Use AOL Then Read This...

Back on April 17th, AFANA e-mailed everyone who is on any of our mailing lists (except for those who were members of the old chat room or BBS).  In that notice we said this:

"AFANA can no longer provide any assurance that you will receive our newsletters if you are a member of AOL.

Thoughts From Sydney

G'day fellow footy fans,

I have finally got around to it, but I hope this is the first of many blogs about my thoughts of footy from here in Sydney. Before I begin, though, it would be remiss of me not to echo the thoughts of Derrick and thanking Rob and the whole AFANA crew for the opportunities I have been afforded so far with AFANA. I have spent the best part of the last 18 months covering Swans games for AFANA, making valuable contacts and gaining important experience while I am still at university.

Having had AFANA on my CV during this time has already helped out. Since joining here, I have become sports editor for the uni magazine publication, am co-hosting a weekly sports program on community radio and this week will begin a cadetship on a news service called National Radio News, second only in reach to the ABC- my first paid job!

So, go to www.afana.com, register, log in, and join the activity.

Greetings AFANA Tipsters,

This is the weekly update on the AFANA Members Tipping Competition for Round 12.

Back after a week off from the report, and unfortunately the news is not that great.  Despite having a greater spread in tips in some of the games this week, there were 3 crucial upsets that caught most tipsters off guard.  Only 3 members picked Geelong and Port Adelaide for their wins, while only Nigel and Greg correctly tipped the Hawks. Congrats guys.

Those upsets meants pretty low scores for the week. Bryan and Tricia were the top tipsters of the week, both picking up 5 winners. Perversely, those who forgot to send in their tips also scored 5 for the week! Following them was bunch with 4 winners - Nigel, Chris, Pat, Paul and Karl.

Editorial: Why Pay for Footy on TV?

Recently, a couple of fans wrote in that they didn't feel that the offering by Setanta was worth $11.99 per month for just one game and since they aren't interesting in anything else offered on Setanta Sports, they planned to cancel their subscription.  Another fan told us he was tired of waiting for the highlights and was bailing out.

AFANA feels those attitudes are misguided and if they prevail, will doom any hope of live AFL coverage in the US for the rest of this decade.  Instead, we should be doing everything we can to support the live coverage and encouraging more fans to subscribe before the end of this season.  Despite the limitation of the coverage to DirecTV and Globecast customers, it needs to be supported for the long term good of footy fans in North America.

Being an AFL Photojournalist

I'd been a photographer for about 18 months, covering predominantly surfing in my home state of South Australia - with great success. Having played Australian Rules Football myself for a number of years, I then decided to test my photographic acumen at professional sports level - AFL training, at the two local clubs here in Adelaide - The Adelaide Crows, and Port Adelaide Power.

My first big break came in a matter of weeks, where I captured an image of Daryl Wakelin wearing a newly devised headgear, and returning to top level football after a dramatic head injury sustained weeks before. As luck would have it, Port Adelaide Power used the image on their AFL Club website. This was back in the year 2003, towards the conclusion of the football season.
