Dale Thomas (COL), striking Essendon's Paddy Ryder: assessed as negligent impact (one point), low impact (one point), and high contact (two points), equaling four points, a Level One Offense, 80 demerits, and a reprimand. He has no existing good or bad record and acceptance would have reduced the penalty 25% to 60 demerits, still a reprimand with the demerits held over toward his future record.
Thomas decided to challenge the report. Field umpire Michael Vozzo testified that he had a clear view of the incident and said he believed the contact was accidental. The panel then dismissed the charge.
Shaun Burgoyne (PA), rough conduct against Saint Lenny Hayes: reckless conduct (two points), medium impact (two points), and high contact (two points), equaling six points, a Level Three Offense, 325 demerits, and a three game suspension.He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea would have reduced the penalty 25% to 243.75 demerits and a two game suspension.
Burgoyne, an early favorite for the Brownlow Medal, risked his medal chances and a three game suspension to challenge the charge. At the start of his hearing, he said the possibility of winning his first Brownlow was a motivating factor for him to not to do anything which would get him reported. He also argued that he made no substantial contact with the head and neck of St Kilda's Lenny Hayes when he fell across him, and that the contact was not reckless. His counsel at the hearing suggested that Hayes was injured when his head hit the ground. The panel ruled in favor of Burgoyne and dismissed the charge.
Adam Goodes (SYD), charging Demon Simon Godfrey: intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point), and body contact (one point), equaling five points, a Level Two Offence, 225 demerits, and a two game suspension. He has an existing five-year good record, reducing the penalty 25% to 168.75 demerits and a one game suspension. Acceptance would have reduced the penalty a further 25% to 126.56 demerits and a one game suspension.
Goodes opted to challenge the report in an effort to have it downgraded to striking rather than charging. Although Goodes collided with Godfrey, sending Godfrey to the ground. The Tribunal counsel tried to argue that the contact constituted a charge. However, Goodes' advocate successfully argued that Goodes' action in making contact to Godfrey's back with an elbow and forearm constituted a strike and not a charge. Goodes himself said it was a silly mistake and that it wouldn't happen again. The panel ruled in favor of Goodes, lowering the classification. It allowed Goodes to accept a reprimand with the demerits lowered to 70.31. However, because the original charge added up to over 100 demerits, Goodes, who has never been reported at either junior or senior level, is now ineligible for the Brownlow.
Kade Simpson and Andrew Carrazzo (CARL), making negligent contact with an umpire: a first offense incurs a fine of $3200. Both players accepted, reducing the fine 25% to a $2400 fine.
The match day report laid against West Coast's Tyson Stenglein for making front-on contact to Richmond's Richard Tambling was assessed by the MRP. The panel ruled that Tambling ducked into Stenglein as Stenglein approached the contest, leaving Stenglein with no alternative to contest the ball and the contact to Tambling's head was caused by circumstances outside Stenglein's control. Therefore, the MRP threw out the report.
