The trade period opened on Monday, October 7 and included the moves of players eligible for free agency. Under AFL rules, clubs can attempt to retain players by matching a rival club's bid. Should they be unable or unwilling to do so, the player is free to move. Clubs losing players under the free agency rule may receive compensatory draft selections.

Shaun Burgoyne (HAW, traded from PA) became the 29th player in League history to win a Premiership with two different clubs after the Hawks won the Grand Final. Most recent players to reach this milestone are Darren Jolly (SYD and COL), Stuart Dew (PA and HAW), Cameron Mooney (NM and GEEL), Jason Ball (WCE and SYD), Byron Pickett (NM and PA), Damian Hardwick (ESS and PA), Gavin Wanganeen (ESS and PA), Martin Pike (NM and BRIS) and Blake Caracella (ESS and BRIS).

Week One Finals Milestones

Chris Newman and Brett Deledio (RICH) will play their first finals match in the first week of Finals. Newman has played 232 games without a Finals appearance while Deledio has had to wait 194 games. This puts them fifth and eighth respectively as the longest wait for a Finals appearance.

Coaches Unhappy With New Technologies

The AFL used Round 15 to test a new goal review system imported from England. The blockbuster between Carlton and Collingwood was one of three games in which the Hawk-Eye technology was tried. The new system, however, was only being tried and not actually used to adjudicate any scores. Unlike the current system, which uses available replay footage, the new technology allows reviewers to see the scoring shot from a variety of angles as well as manipulating the vision themselves and even excluding angles to focus on just one or two to assist in determining the score. The multiple-angle technology allows comparative views to determine if the ball has been touched before passing the goal line, or whether it hit the goal post.

Round 12 Milestones

Mick Malthouse (Carlton) will participate in his 850th official match as a coach and a player, comprising 174 games as a player for St Kilda and Richmond and 675 games as a coach for Footscray, West Coast, Collingwood and Carlton. He is just the third man in the game's history to reach the mark. Ahead of him is Jock McHale (878 games comprising 261 games as a player and playing coach and a further 617 games as non-playing coach).

Round 11 Milestones

In Round 11, GWS Coach Kevin Sheedy will coach against Carlton Mick Malthouse for the 47th time, a VFL/AFL record. They last coached against each other in Round 16, 2007 and Sheedy has 27 wins to Malthouse’s 19. The two have coached a combined total of 1339 games with Malthouse recording 391 wins and Sheedy 388. The Round 11 game will be the first time they have coached against each other at Etihad Stadium.

In the same sound, Nick Riewoldt (StK) will captain the Saints for the 150th time since 2005, becoming the second man in club history after Danny Frawley (177 games as captain 1987-95) to reach this mark.

Round Six Milestones

Mick Malthouse (CARL) and Kevin Sheedy (GWS) are now tied in second place for all-time wins by a coach. Carlton's Round Five win against Adelaide and the Giants' loss to Gold Coast put both on 388 career wins, just behind Collingwood's Jock McHale (467 wins).
